red wine, specifically

a lot

zinfandel is probably my favorite, followed by pinot noir, shiraz, merlot, and cab. white wine is okay with certain meals but for the most part i loves me some red grapes. seriously, if you think you hate wine you just haven't had good wine yet. it's not necesecelery an acquired taste.

right now:

Devil's Marbles Shiraz 2003 (australian, limestone coast)

$3.99! such a good deal. i remember being all about this one around thnxgiving, and it's finally back in stock. it's delish. the chard isn't as good, but fuck white wine anyway. red wine + homemade baguette pizza = my friday nights.

i've never had really expensive wine, in fact i don't think i've ever gone over $10 for a bottle, but yeah, it's pretty good

i like red wine, i don't even bother with white. shiraz is my favorite so far. i didn't like pinot noir so much, it kind of tasted like spicy grape juice, but then again, maybe cheap pinot noir isn't very good. i liked cheap merlot better.

but shiraz, shiraz is nice.

yellow tail is pretty reliable, i think. it's probably like, the budweiser of wines, but i dunno, it's reasonably priced and it tastes pretty good. and it's wine, so it gets you drunk

yellowtail is vegan! most wine is filtered through egg albumin or fish scales :(

but yeah, it's good stuff. i'm lucky enough to work at a place where good wine comes cheap. probably the best wine i've ever had was Stagg's Leap - i believe it was a cabernet, but holy fuck it was amazing. $45 a bottle, probably more like $60 anywhere else. sooo good. i've had more expensive but this stood out.

steger doesn't like red, he only likes sweet german whites. what a fageleh.

one nice thing about yellow tail is the cork. i suck at cork removal, and when they're made out of, you know, cork, i always end up breaking them a little, or at least making the top flake out a bit when i screw the corkscrew in. then i always worry about bits falling into the wine.

yellow tail has a sort of plasticy type cork though, it doesn't fall apart. which is good for lameos like me

bob, buy cork pops (http://www.winestoppershop.com/PopCork.jpg). it has a CO2 cartridge. you jam the sharp needle thing into the cork, push down on the cartridge, and it forces the cork out of the bottle, all in one piece. it's brilliant, really.

i'm a fan of reds myself. i prefer pinot noir and merlot to any other, but i haven't yet tried a really good shiraz or cabernet, so i might like those just as well. it seems the williamette (sp?) valley is the best area for growing pinot noir. adelsheim and de loach were the best i've ever had for pinot, but they're about $30 per bottle. sooooo worth it.

the last time i had wine was my birthday. i drank far too much. i don't recall a half hour phone conversation i had with one of my trial partners, nor the other 3 minute call from my other trial partner telling me to go to a bar. i do recall vomiting. and i woke up naked in my bed the next day. :o

a preference for white wine immediately identifies the offender as a teenage girl or a hairdresser.

I love food and drink trends. Things tend to fade in and out of fashion, but some things really stick. Fancy coffee really stuck. Tea shops haven't.

10-15 years ago, it was 90% likely that a single woman would order a glass of chardonnay--it seemed like a mildly cultured thing to do. Now chardonnay is so out of fashion no one at a wine bar mentions it, even when if it's a good choice with a particular food. Middle-aged ladies used to drink chablis and now I'm not sure if you can even find it except in boxed wine anymore.

I think the reason it took Americans so long to like red wine is that we got really cheap bad red wine for years and our taste buds like more sugar. As Americans became willing to spend more money for wine and as we started getting decent American reds, it caught on.

Cabernet is my favorite kind, but the cheap ones are usually really bad, so if I go to someone's house I'll have a pinot noir or shiraz. I won't drink merlot at anyone's house because it was trendy here for a few years and people who don't like or know wine tend to push crappy merlots at you. It might be that I don't like the taste of merlot too.

White wine is nice if I'm drinking a glass outside, without food, on a warm summer's day. There are many good Australian whites for that purpose. I can't stand the German ones. When I visit my German friends I always drink beer. :)

Bob -- It's almost always okay if you get some cork in your wine. Don't stress out about it.

It's amazing to me, but the movie did change the way some people entertain. Of maybe it was the wine stores that changed their end caps after the movie came out to push California pinot noir. Because all of a sudden I was getting offered pinot noir at former merlot homes. :p

It made me a little embarrassed to drink Merlot. But not enough to stop. I also like Chardonnay and I don't care what anyone thinks. :)

I can't seem to get into red wine. I can handle white occasionally but even then I just don't find it very appealing. Red wine generally reminds me of church.

In Argentina/Chile their red wine was really sweet and yum town.

yeah Pinot Noir is real popular down here these days. which is nice cause now it's available in large quantities, but some of it is unnecessarily expensive.

You will be mocked for that, but you should have what you like. My mom likes blush and people roll their eyes.

I've started bringing a bottle of Chardonnay to dinner parties because someone else can be counted on to bring red wine, and Chardonnay is the only white wine that I can drink warm. Plus I enjoy doing things that aren't fashionable.

That's why I can't drink it. I definitely prefer white, pinot grigio especially. I've tried a few red wines, most of them pretty fancy, and I just don't like it. It doesn't do much for me at all but give me a headache.

geyser peak's pinot grigio has always been good to me. I love shopping for a new bottle of wine. I really enjoy perusing the wine section at the grocery store. opening a new bottle is exciting. never know what your gonna get. white, red, rose, whatever... love em all. even chardonnay.

i've only started drinking wine in the last 6 months
so far i only like white
i've tried sauvignon blanc, semillion sauvignon blanc, chardonnay and unwooded chardonnay. didn't like the regular chardonnay i tried.

red just seems so heavy and ugh. have no idea how to go about conquering red. tried some rose that was ok but still not very nice.

I used to make some shit that would put hair on your chest. I had thought that once I've moved back to the states that I would keep making it but yet, no time and also I've found that I miss the "real" stuff.

Currently my favorite is a French made 1995 Chateau Simard which runs at about 27 bucks a bottle.

When you buy some wine, try to store it for a while on its side, the way it should be. Always buy wine that's stored in racks on its side, if you're not already. It sounds like your corks are drying out, which can also allow air into the bottle and screw up the wine.

A regular old corkscrew should work fine. Just press kind of firmly and screw it down -- don't wiggle it around as the corkscrew goes in. Make sure it's right in the center, not angling off to one side.

holy shit, bevmo has an amazing sale! buy one bottle get the second for 5 cents! i really hope this holds over until the weekend. sahhhweet.

trader joe's fans: pick up Rocking Horse cab for drinking now and several bottles of Alexander & Fitch cab for aging. or drinking now. hell, get a case. it's 5.99 compared to 14.99 elsewhere and an amazing bargain. heavy tannins, very lip-smacking and robust. it's great now but will be fucking amazing after a year or two of cellar aging (y)
