View Full Version : Why is this so upsetting?

OK. I bought something on eBay last weekend, an old NME magazine from 1986 that had articles on Debbie Harry, the Replacements, and the Beastie Boys in it. Just happened to spot it, thought it would make interesting reading if I could get it for cheap. Which I did - I was the only bidder, so it cost me 99p plus postage. Now, the postage was a little steep, but I knew that going into it, so, no big deal.

I sent the money for it on Monday and the item arrived on Wednesday. I posted positive feedback, saying "Item arrived quickly and well packaged." In the little 'detailed feedback' ratings section, I rated 5 stars (very positive) in the first 3 categories, and 3 stars (neutral) in the last, which was about the postage.

So this morning I went onto eBay again for the first time since then, and in my feedback section, the seller had written "Non payer, absolute trash, a total insult to the eBay community". WTF???

So I wrote to them, thinking it must be some kind of mistake, and said "I'm very shocked by this, if there was any problem why did you not contact me personally? Surely there is some mistake, what on earth have I done that you would write this about me?" Thinkig it must be a mix-up and theywould write back saying "I'm terribly sorry, must have confused you with someone else" and we could work it out amicably.

Instead, they wrote back quoting the bit where I said "I'm very shocked by this" and said "So were we when we read your detailed feedback." And that's it.

So I wrote back again saying "excuse me? Are you sure haven't confused me with someone else? I left 5 stars in all categories except postage, which was 3. Surely you can't be that upset that I gave you a neutral score in postage that you would publicly accuse me of not paying - which I did - and call me trash?"

I haven't heard back since then.:( But for some reason it's got me so upset and riled, I can't seem to focus on my work, which is what I'm supposed to be doing right now while mr.p has the kiddlywink out of the house. Why? I wihs I wasn't this agitated about it, but I am.

Oh my god. Fuck me. I just got an email from them and they've said that they wrote what they did because I left them the 3 star rating on postage - which is simply neutral - which means have 'tarnished their image on a public forum'.

So that makes it OK to lie and say that I didn't pay, and that I'm 'absolute trash', and 'an insult'?

WTF?

Cuntbag. I've sent my last response:
I'm just... I'm just... stunned. I feel that I did not saying anything bad about you. I just didn't really have strong feeling on the matter of postage. I'm just so disappointed that if it was something that you felt was so important, you didn't contact me about it directly, and that instead you decided to falsely publicly declare that I did not pay you, and to call me trash, and 'an insult'. I am sorry if you were upset by my neutral remark, but I feel you have overreacted in your response.

Well, if what you wanted to do was make me feel badly, then congratulations, you have succeeded. I am really very hurt. I can't see as I have done anything that warrants being treated so harshly, but I guess I will just have to hold my head up and get on with life. I don't think you have acted like a very fair or nice person, but I suppose in life one encounters such individuals. C'est la vie.

I'll just have to rely on karma to sort this one out in the end.

Contact eBay and tell them what happened. Complain that seller treated you this way, and you in no way deserved the harsh rating that you got. Ebay can look at what feedback you left for them, and what they left for you in return (AND track whether or not you paid them) and handle them appropriately.

Do it. (y)

I posted positive feedback, saying "Item arrived quickly and well packaged."

I looked at it and you actually said "Item arrived quickly and expertly packed" which is a pretty damn good appraisal, better than what you claimed to have written. And it has a little + sign next to your comment. It's obvious that he's lying, because eBayers don't send out their shit unless they get paid...unless they're complete fucking morons. And since you said you already received it and it was well-packaged....

That really chaps my hide. What a fucking asshole. (n)

I probably will. I'm going to wait until later when I've cooled down a little. I'm still too steamed.

My last response from them was "well it goes to show doesn't it, eBay is nothing to you but it's our livelihood and we will do what we have to to protect that."

Including falsely accusing people of not paying, apparently.

What cuntrags.

As much as I would love to kneecap the motherfucker, I am the mother of a 10 month old, and can't really devote the time to full-fledged stalking.

But I was watching Donnie Brasco last night and I can see how a little well-placed ultraviolence can be a very effective communications tool, so yeah, it's a great suggestion in principle. (y)

I just checked eBay's policies on negative retaliatory feedback. Unfortunately, it looks like there isn't really anything I can do, as what they have said - EVEN THOUGH IT IS A BLATANT FUCKING LIE - doesn't fall under their Feedback Abuse policy, as it doesn't contain racist or obscene or threatening language.

I deal with really big issues all day long at work but it's the little irritiating shit and general unfairness of some things that gets under my skin and drives me crazy. I guess it's natural. I'll blow up if someone is inconsiderate but I can explain things patiently to truly crazy people.

Ebay lets you comment on their negative feedback though. I've seen other people do it. You can say that it's an outright lie what they said. I'd still complain to ebay and forward all those emails where they admit that they gave you negative feedback for your negative feedback. Ebay knows you didn't pay late.

I have done about a hundred purchases and I can't believe that happened. That's insane. Early on, my friend bought something that took about four months to arrive with no communication from the seller, so when it finally arrived she left a negative comment re shipping delay. The seller then left negative feedback about her and she had paid right on time.

Because of what happened to my friend and because it's the only thing that makes sense to me, it's my policy to never ever leave feedback until the seller leaves mine. I figure that my entire responsibility is to pay quickly and I always do. So the seller has to leave me some positive feedback on paying fast or I won't leave any for them.

Ms P, your experience is almost exactly what happened to my dad recently on ebay. He bought some old magazines featuring The Beatles - got them for a good price and paid a hefty postage fee expecting them to arrive by by recorded mail or something. When they arrived they were in a tatty envelope with a second class stamp on it. No where near the cost of the postage he paid.

Like you he left positive feedback because he was pleased with the mags but made a comment about the postage costs.

The seller left my dad negative feedback (his first) saying something like "useless buyer. moaned about postage when he got a bargain"

Some people are first class dicks. (n)

Seriously though, I am just about over it. (Not quite, but working on it.)

Mr.p is being very zen about the whole thing. I told him all about it when he got home from having the baby out for the day, and of course he agrees that they have acted like complete asssholes, but he's all like "Their actions are a symptom of a deficiency in their soul; you can choose not to get sucked into their whirlpool of bad energy. You have a beautiful baby, we're having a delicious dinner, it's Mother's Day, I've bought some lovely flowers at the flower market, we've opened up a fantastic bottle of wine - these are the things you should keep at the forefront of your consciousness, don't let them rob you of feeling the simple pleasures of those things."

I don't know what the fuck he's been reading lately, but I guess he's right.

Hmm this is probably the primary reason why I don't buy/sell through e-bay, there's always some jackasses trying to fuck you over, just because they can stay anonymous.. Those bastards probably know all too well how far they can go in pissing you off without breaking any rules, too bad you can't change your feedback afterwards.
Buy something really cheap from them again and post your whole story as a negative feedback.. or you could just go with the shitting in an envelope (;

I did. You're limited to 80 characters though, so all I could put was "A lie- this person was paid. Is angry about feedback left re: postage". Hopefully people will see that every other feedback I have is positive and that this is a clear anomaly. It just burns me that I can't really do anything to warn people off this seller now at this point.

Apparently, buying something just to leave negative feedback is a violation of eBay's code. So, just to recap: lying OK, revenge bad. Apparently.

plus this "17 ratings mutually withdrawn"

Sorry to hear about this Peachy :(

I've never had that big of a problem with Ebay except one guy who went on vacation for a few weeks without telling me and didn't pay.

But yeah, I won't leave feedback unless the seller leaves feedback for me first. It's no skin off my back if he never leaves me feedback for something I bought, but I KNOW those sellers want that good feedback and would be upset if they didn't get it. They can't be assholes to me if they want something nice written, too.

Well, that makes sense.

Doesn't Ebay have some sort of arbitration system? It's kind of unwieldy, I think, but not impossible.

I'd contact them with the listing and your receipt for payment, documenting that their negative feedback is unjustified.

LOL it's not even quite that really. First of all I can't believe someone would react so disproportionately to the 'offense' caused, but mainly I just feel like it's deplorable that this person can operrate in this way and there's no recourse. At lease, so far. I will report it to eBay later today and see where it goes. I'm not confident that they will care, though.

I would be very upset about this. It would play on my mind and it's understandable. You have been besmirched.

As much as I love ebay, the fact people are involved means it's always going to suck in some way.

A friend of mine sold a phone for £250, and the person he sold it too claimed it didn't arrive, although the sig the postman got was the buyer's, but this info wasn't found until after 14 days the Paypal time limit for investigations, so my friend was made to refund the money.
But he's a scary ginger bloke so he got the buyer's home number in London, and told him if payment wasn't made in one week he'd be on the first plane down to London to hurt him big time, and the buyer paid up.
It really shouldn't have to be that way.

Sorry to hear about your story Ms P. I am having a 'crisis' with ebay too. I bought 2 dresses from ebay, but decided to send them both back. Unfortunately, in my general dizziness, I sent dress A to seller B and vice versa. One seller immediately realised I had made a mistake and sent the dress back but the other seller has been crapola and has not sent it back yet despite MANY emails and promises. They claim to have posted it last week but it has not turned up yet.

The nice seller had agreed to honour the refund if I could get the correct dress back to her by today (which is 28 days since I bought it) but that's impossible seeing as I haven't had the other dress back.

I'm worried the evil feckers will hope I have given up on getting it back and just sell it on their site.

It's bloody annoying.
