Seems that about three production months' worth of wet food has been recalled. Don't know if you pet owners have heard about this, but you might want to check your stock.

From Mercury News: (http://www.mercurynews.com/ci_5469862)

Retailers scrambled to yank cat and dog food off their shelves Sunday as fearful pet owners worried whether the treats they served their furry friends would kill them.

The effects of a widespread recall of nearly 100 brands of pet food rippled across the country, while the makers of the food remained puzzled as to what has killed 10 cats and dogs and sickened others.

I was worried when I first heard about it. Then I realised it was just wet food and didn't care cause I only feed my cat the dry stuff.

the vet said that george should only be eating wet food. my friend's cat's vet said that too. dry food has too many carbs and they get addicted to it. also, george had a blockage in his urethra that had to get squeezed out, my friend's cat had an even worse pee pee problem. he still eats a little dry food though, because mochi eats dry food and we can't keep them from eating eachother's food no matter what we try.

CATS

that recall is scary. I'm sure the cats have eaten some of that stuff. good thing they mostly eat science diet or friskies though, which aren't on the list as far as I know.

well, if a vet told you, then he knows what he's talking about. in my experience, wet foods tend to give animals the shits and they have big sloppy gross turds. i'd rather give them bones or fresh meat or something.

yeah, I used to think that dry food was better...but it seems like they're saying it's not anymore. I don't know.

I got some packets of cat food that are like real chunks of fish. it's really gross-looking, but the cats love it. it looks clean and fresh though...I suppose less gross than the smushy poop they have in cans.

wet food does make for stinkier poops. :(

we don't ever give it to our animals at the store. we tell whoever's buying pets that it's a "sometimes food"

george ate dry food his whole life until he got plugged up. I think it's older male cats that need the extra moisture from wet food. I really can't find anything definitive online. :/

I want to get one of those water dishes that circulate water with a waterfall.

Can i ask about this "wet/dry" food being bad for cats? I feed my neighbours cats cause she works long hours. 1 gets a pouch of wet meaty chunky stuff and the other gets half a can of tuna. They share a pretty small sized bowl of dried food between them.

I looked after them for a while now - the one that eats the tuna used to only eat dried stuff and looked real skinny, it was me that started giving it tuna and it seems to love that shit. It looks "normal" weight now.

Is that healthy enough? They are probably about 3-4 years old and seem pretty good... They spend their time 50/50 inside and out.

My two cats eat dry food and they are quite healthy, their fur, their turds, their eating habits all seem good to go....and my vet hasn't told me otherwise

yeah, tuna is fine, as long as it's pretty plain stuff. there's not as much flavour variety in dry food, so it's possible he may have gotten sick of it. i've found that they enjoy eating wet food much more.

You mean it's not made of humans?

I remember seeing a movie when I was younger that was about some cat food company that had the best selling cat food and it was made of human meat and it caused cats to kill people because it tasted so good.

A-z, help me. What is this movie? It freaked the shit out of me and I almost hated cats after that.

It sounds like the same movie. Hard to remember because I think I was 10 years old when I saw it.

Well, it's on DVD if you get curious.

There was even a sequel in 2002. (!)

I think the one I saw was a remake then because the clothing wasn't as bell bottomy.

Hmmm. The sequel was in 2000, so I doubt that that's it.

Weird.

This might be one for Ask the AV Club.

Well, it just may be it. It could be that I was wearing bell bottoms at the time and didn't realize everyone else was. I just looked at it as people being normal.

I'll have to watch the whole movie to see if anything clicks. It's probably it.

obviously some one did this intentionally. I can't imagine they make rat poison in the same facility as animal food.

we've had people come into the store very concerned about this. i have to explain how this is in the US, and how we no longer stock any of the affected brands.
