baby polar bear abandoned by his mother. berlin zoo are looking after him, handrearing him. there is debate over whether he should be put down or raised by the zookeepers.

haha, i just got pics of him forwarded today by my friend saying "it's knut the baby polar bear! i want to visit him on saturday!" she's going to berlin at the weekend, obviously. jealous!
i want to give it a cuddle.
ranald laughed at me for thinking that i could just go up to a panda and give it a cuddle. he's like 'it's a bear, you fanny'.

Pandas don't count. They eat bamboo, how tough can they be?
I bet they'd cuddle back. ;)

because it's unnatural for a polar bear to be hand reared. they are not meant to be around humans at all.

since polar bears are endangered I think they did the right thing by saving this little guy.
it's unnatural for most animals in the zoo to be hand feed. they should all be in the wild, but that's not how the world works these days.

yeah, that's what i think too.
and you gotta think about his quality of life. would he be better off dead? i don't think so - he's being cared for by zookeepers and i imagine that they would try to raise him as naturally as possible.

Also...I don't see this as being much different than Pandas. Humans have done alot to try to help preserve the panda species so far as getting them to breed in captivity, etc.
pandas are suppose to be alone in the wild also.

I've spoken about this too much on other forums the last couple of days to go into it again! It's completely stupid!

Polar bears are the very best animal on earth....simply for the reason that if they catch you they will kill you,everytime.....it's not even personal, just instinct.....no other animal on earth posseses such a predatory simple mindedness towards homosapien......more bears, less people now!......but if his own mother rejected him he's probably a real bastard anyways.....

Bye Polar Bears!
wrong, all that global warming is bullshit invented by Maggie Thatcher to stop Arthur Scargill in the early 80's when he took the miners out on strike.
All the lies told by the governments ,so they can raise taxes is true
but if his own mother rejected him he's probably a real bastard anyways.....
or maybe he's just a nerd
i dunno, if zookeepers wanna try raising a polar bear, i say let 'em, it's not my funeral. if they pull it off, we could raise an army of polar bears, trained to do man's bidding. how sweet would that be? pretty sweet, that's how sweet it would be.

colbert report last night was talking about this cute lil guy
i say save him, polar bears are endangered and its not like he's harming anybody. kill him cuz his mom rejected him, to me thats not a good enough reason to kill him, only if he was like a pychopathic bear then i'd agree to ummm yea kill him.

Word! Have someone eat the damn animal so we can SAVE A PIG!
That guy wanting him dead must be a total nutcase. He's always labeled a "animal activist" in Germany but that's just to give 'em a bad rep. Why would an "animal activist" go gaga over one polar bear (especially since it's one of only a scant few born in a zoo)? He'd better protest on the motherfucking cattletransports or chicken batteries. But NOOO Mr Animal Activist wants to be on a german talk show to get boooed at by the unwashed masses. Fucker makes a lot of money that way! AAH!

How about an army of men trained to do polar bears bidding?....we do need him for his DNA however (for clones of course)and so that when the aliens pass judgement on us;we can maintain the front that as a species we were trying to do something positive on the planet.....(y)

When I was a kid they had polar bears in Stanley Park....which is essentially a temperate rain forest....in the tiniest enclosure you ever saw....the bears were actually moldy and had constant sores and chewed alot of their fur off so they look like they had the mange....one eventually died and the other lived alone for many miserable years despite public outcry....because he was a polar bear he could not be transfered to another zoo....as they can't be socialized......fucking deplorable.....people are twisted boyo.....they also use to keep killer whales in a tank about the size of 4 olympic swimming pools.....picture that shit......you can argue conservation, education and preservation till the break of dawn but it's still wrong.......I personally thrill when I see killer whales at marine parks turn on the captors,etc.....Everyone MUST read "Slaughterhouse 5" at least once in their life......(y)

Really, is it practical to raise a baby animal when it cannot learn in it's own environment how to survive? Humans cant teach the animal how to survive; they can raise it like a captive animal and put it in a zoo, that's about it. Releasing back into the wild is a bad idea if humans are going to raise it because it wont have those polar bear skills needed to live. If they are to keep him alive, keep him in captivity at the zoo his/her whole life.
The other option is to put it down. I think extinguishing life because of abandonment is cold in the case of people, but in animals is it so bad? Does it matter in the long run whether this baby polar bear lives or dies? As of now it will be doomed to live it's entire life in captivity, never mating. If it went back into the wild now it would be rejected, and if it went back later it would not surivive or have those 'polar bear skills' needed to survive. If the polar were to die, yes it would be sad, but its' life is, in reality, an empty existence. It doesn't matter if this polar bear lives or dies, it doesn't make a difference now because it can't do the one thing it is supposed to to.
I know that sounds heartless and cold but reality doesn't care if you believe it.:(

Basically noone can know that now. You just gotta wait and see. As I said in my post there are still a lot of animal rights issues in Germany that need to be adressed and this so-called "activist" tries to relay this one-animal-case to the masses! It's 100 certain he would not get a platform for stuff like hen-battery criticism. The "Volk" is not only now considering animal activism to be a trait of dirty drugslinging hippies, they are eagerly awaiting for all the shit the media is about to sell them. God, are your people such tools too?
