Her cancer is back, now at stage 4, uncurable. It can be treated, but they say she will die because of this, it may be a year, it may be ten. Right now, it's come back and spread to her lungs and bones, but they're optimistic and trying to keep it isolated.
In the meantime, she's insisted her husband stay in the presidential race despite her illness.

They have little kids and a lot of money. They should stay home and spend time with their family instead of campaigning.
I don't understand politicians, even though I work for them.

She had a kid when she was 51?! Wow.
I also hadn't realized John Edwards had a son who died. Sounds like their family's been through their fair share of grief, if it was me I don't think I'd cap it off with the vicious bitterness of a Presidential campaign.

that was my first thought when i read the story. This is not the time for heros when your family is dieing, and people are probably going to probably not support dems.

It makes a big difference when Edwards' wife herself insists that he still stay in the race. I would respect his decision either way, but I'm sure these next months are going to be very hard on all of them.

its mid 2007. Christ, take some time off...adjust to the whole terminal aspect of it, live life with your family, and then consider your stance on running (and losing) the presidential bid.

I learned to quit saying that whenever John Kerry got the bid in 2004. He really came out of nowhere (by that I mean, I didn't expect him to come out of that field when Dean was the favorite).
I think anyone can grab momentum and run with it, so I wouldn't advise anyone to just drop out at this point.

Dying wife? He's got potential VOTERS to speak to!
He can't be dealing with a terminal illness or that kind of thing.
Pah.
