San Francisco passes plastic bag ban (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070328/ap_on_re_us/plastic_bag_ban;_ylt=AoU_oan5VakcHzMjwYlsqV_MWM0F)

haha. Part of me thinks this is cool and part of me thinks it's dumb. Environmentally, ok this makes a bit of sense...it's not going to solve the problems but may help.

But I think people are just going to laugh at this...and it kinda feels like city is basically treating people like children. "ok kids since you can't be responsible enough to pick up your plastic bags and keep them off the street, we'll just take them away from you!"

it's kinda like when my catholic high school banned our white button down shirts and replaced them with polos because too many kids were wearing t-shirts under thier button downs and leaving them unbuttoned.

it's not a ban on all plastic bags (just from high end or corporate stores)...but still the first thing I thought of was Dog Poop. I'm not picking up dog poop with a paper bag. Second...where are the homeless going to get thier free rain hats????

Its too bad we can't recycle and make the right choices and that goverment has to do things like this. I see no problem with it. Goverments should be doing a lot more of the right things.

well biodegradable plastic bags are allowed under the ban however, most grocers are saying that they are more costly than regular bags and don't want to use them.

In Europe people take canvas bags to the grocery. The other day the guy was double bagging all the stuff in the plastic bags.
Can you imagine all the waste? Plastic bags will one day rule the earth.

If this had happened years ago what would have the director of American Beauty used for the odd kid to film?

Recycling should just be the law. I had a really hard time accepting that when I lived in England... I think they did that in Germany too but I lived in the dorms there. Anyway, at first I was like "I don't care if they catch me or not! I'm putting the garbage in THIS can and I ain't separating shit!" (No really I said that out loud everytime I took the trash out). Then after giving it a try, I was shocked by how much of my "trash" could be recycled. I had more in the recycle bin than in the trash can!!

actually santa rosa has this law as well. Belmont got all the media, but our ordinance passed in Dec...they snuck it on the ballot somewhere.

you can't smoke with in 20ft of public businesses, in public parks...basically anywhere other than a private home...preferably under a blanket with the lights out to hide the shame of being a smoker.

I have alot of problems with the ban actually and I'm not even a smoker. BUt I think it's Nazi bullshit. I'm pretty sure we inhale more harmful vapors from automobiles and busses on a daily basis than we do second hand smoke---but dont' get me started. I don't even want to debate this, cause we are talking plastic bags here anyway.

BTW...canvas bags really are the way to go. They are strong and durable and very handy. HOw hard is it to keep some in your car? and have you been to trader joes lately? they have hella cute ones and they are only like a buck a peice or something. and if you take a couple of bags with you and you have more groceries than will fit just get paper and recycle it. duh.

Still...I like a plastic bag once in a while...for dog poop or when it's raining.:o

By "private home" you mean "private house," right?

It's so fucking discriminatory. Unless you own your own house -- not even a condo, but a separate, detached house -- you can't smoke at home.

I think this is a fucking awesome idea.
Plastic bags are a waste of petroleum.
If we keep going the way we are now as a human race we'll be out of oil in the next 50 years. Then shit will get very cold in winter. It's time we stop being retarded with our oil.

I think that only the rich should be allowed to vote, by the way. They'll be paying cough the most in cough taxes anyway, so it's only cough fair.

they did this in Ireland and it worked a treat. Most people use those re-usable bags and you rarely the old ones littering up the streets.

Its funny though, its not a total ban. They charge you 15c for them. Most people, struggling to carry all their shit go "no thanks" when asked if they want a bag. 15c isnt worth it, then they drop their shit all over the floor.

Good stuff.

I think heating with oil is dumber than plastic bags.

Tasmania has had banned plastic bags for a while, works well.

I can't remember when smoking in apartments was ever allowed in Seattle. I've lived in Seattle for 10 years and never rented an apartment its okay to smoke in.

ANyway, does the plastic bag ban extend to clothing stores too?

ANyway, does the plastic bag ban extend to clothing stores too?

I beleive it will if the clothing store generates over a million in profits. I don't remeber exactly but this is suppose to be for stores of any kind that have high or over a certain amount of earnings. they won't enforce it with the small mom and pop stores. that's my understanding from the news and that articles I've read.
