View Full Version : oh gnoes!!1 Application forms
How important do you think spelling is on a CV? liek srsly?
I just noticed i didn't include the accents in resume.
hmmmmm!
Seriously though, what sort of thing do employers look for in these things? I don't mean shitty supermarket jobs, i mean proper jobs like in design offices and such. Surely the same old bullshit from countless students would get right tedious after a while? Must be more to it than that.
i've been told by people that teach you how to write resumes that spelling errors are death, kind of
it's like, your resume is what they use to compare you to all the other people who are using their resumes to apply for the same job, and if one guy's spelled everything right, but the other guy hasn't, it makes the decision easier on them, or something

See, i've heard that too, but i guess i didn't spell anything wrong, just kinda put it as 'resume' rather than 'résumé'.
But seriously, if you were some sort of genius and had a 1:1 degree and miss out a shitty accent or full stop in a word that some other canditate probly doesnt know the meaning of, then...
i guess whoever is grading them is only human after all and would rather make things easy for themselves, right enough.
Damn you microsoft word.
there's an accent in resume?
i've made a huge mistake
actually i hear you're not supposed to write "resume" anywhere on the actual document. they know it's a resume, they don't need to be told that

there's TWO. duh.
I actually didn't use it referring to my own application, i was talking about why i wanted to work for this specific consultancy, and i refered to their past 'resume of domestic and international projects'
fiddlesticks :(

yes. people who don't have good spelling but cannot even be arsed to check their bad spelling and at least pretend they are alright for an application form are immediately sort of blacklisted. well, it's their introduction to you, you have to make it as flawless as possible. it's not that hard to spell correctly on application forms. it's not as if you are IM-applying for a job, is it?
i have a 1:1 degree but i am not some sort of genius. i can spell though
glasgow university ftw, teh, glasgow university ftw. don't let this alumni down.

Just use the words "curriculum vitae" instead!
No accents required!

I think IMing your resume is the way of the future. Text message even.
I put the wrong company name on the resume that got my current job, the guy didn't seem to notice. But I think it was because I was the only person applying that typed something on a computer, rather than scrawl it on the back of a dole cheque.
My crappy job application worked, got an interview on Wednesday

hahaha. yes, like alcoholic eggs if you want them to be. ew.. gross. yuck. might be interesting, though.
it does look a little like hogwarts, hah. i'll show you a picture of me in my gowns in the cloisters during graduation if you want. actually, let's not. that sounds a bit dirty.
it is a great university. but it depends whatcha wanna do. your parents will have to shell out some international student fees galore though unless you get some special commonwealth rate or scholarship or whatever. actually, i don't know the big difference. but still. yeah! go for it. scotland a go go.
has the new job got a big desk involved?
No, that's why I put the  in there.

Well apparently it won't be any more extra than uni in Aus. Only problem is that I would be living alone and need to work aswell to live.
Ohh you meant Scottish eggs by Scotch eggs? Hahaha
yeah, i was actually re-thinking, it totally depends on your normal 'home' fees. for some people it is actually cheaper going abroad. or if not that, only marginally more expensive. to be in a new country and around awesome people like me, that's worth it. oooh. exciting! go for it.
and you won't have to live on your own. we have halls of residence here, ya know!
and, yes. scotch eggs as in boiled eggs surrounded by pale sausage meat. yum?

Good luck with that. Interviewing for a job you don't want? :(
But, yeah -- making sure your CV is error-free is a good step. Though as sloppy as some folks are getting, it's probably only a generation or so away from not mattering as much.

Not really sure what it's all about yet. I just sent out some applications to different places to see who were foolish enough to get back to me.

Yeah. Our secretary got it and saw the missing accent marks and pitched it. She's pretty fucking ruthless, and nothing I could say would dissuade her.
But you probably would've just been making dough posting on message boards for a living, so...

With the decline in standards of basic education in the UK, and more and more school leavers and graduates having little idea about spelling and the like, more employers are testing applicants themselves.
Many teachers now say that problem solving and being able to use technology are more important than the basics, but it's embarrassing when the face of a company or profession makes silly mistakes.
As I deal with a lot of doctors I have to read a hell of a lot of handwritten stuff, and it's sometimes impossible, and occasionally life threatening to the patient. Not just doctors, but other graduates, like clinical psychologists, social workers, and many others that don't know what form of 'there' to use.
It's very disconserting for families to read reports and records of loved ones that are littered with mistakes.
In the last month two people I know have reported being given written tests, sprung on them at interviews (one for an offshore engineering company, one for an IT thingy), all basic math and english stuff, but it's worrying that employers feel they need to do this.
One was told at the interview that someone had shown themselves up when on a business trip to America, and so the company had to make sure it was wasn't made to look stupid again.
Rant over, I'll shut up now.
Yeah Joel, totally come to Glasgow. You can draw the flak from nastee away from me! Hurrah. I don't even like scotch eggs, fucks sake!
I could totally take her in a fight and shit too, 1:1 or no 1:1
See, i understand spelling is a big deal, but it's not like i made any serious mistakes. The only reason i'm particularly bothered is because this is the first application form i've done where i've actually given a rats arse and bothered myself to write something meaningful, and i forget the 2 accents on resume (whilst referring to the consultanties' resume of exicting projects, it wasn't a header on my own bloody application!) and it bothered me a bit, but right enough, i wonder if the person reading it at the other end would notice if they've got 2000 odd applications to read, ya know?
So not a big dealio then?

in america, I don't think they expect anyone to use accents on letters. I don't even know how to make them anyway. :(

alright, I guess I figured it out. nevermind. I always type "resume". éééé
maybe that's why my email cover letters never work out. otherwise everything is spelled correctly. I think that for certain things, if you take the time to make a resume, but don't notice something major like a spelling error, you probably aren't that diligent in your work ethic. I mean, not that bad spellers can't be good workers. they should just realize that they are bad spellers and have someone else double check it even after spell check.
