Arrggh.

It's frustrating to find a restaurant where the food is so good that you have to put up with shitty service.

Seems I may have just found another one.

The hands down worst love/hate relationship I ever had with a restaurant was probably Zelda's Pizza in Sacto. Killer, killer pizza, outrageously good pesto pizza, and the service was usually anywhere from indifferent to rude. We'd often as not just order the pizza as takeout so contact with the staff was as limited as possible. :D

You guys have places like this? Usually, if the service is bad, I just don't go back -- bad service is a deal breaker, to me.

Usually.

Friendly's. They had the best freakin' ice cream sundaes EVER, and it always took about half an hour to get, no matter how un-busy they were.

And their grilled cheese/french fry platter was fuckin' awesome too. Now I want some. :(

most of my bad service problems were related to a specific server and not the establishment itself.

so i usually go back, and if we end up with that same crappy person we just make sure not to leave a tip

I only tipped ten percent last night, which is awfully rare.

Yeah, I'm assuming it was just this dude's problem -- the other servers looked like they were hopping.

But there have been occasional places where the whole staff is kind of weak -- usually a kind of hip place where they know they don't really have to try. Zelda's is like that, and one of the used record stores around here is like that.

Do waiters expect tips in America? I've never seen someone tip one in Australia. Maybe I just haven't been looking hard enough though.

15-20 percent is expected. most places will put on 18% on the bill for large groups automatically

when i say we don't leave a tip, i really mean it...haha. i'm talking like we basically give him whatever is left in the change so its been as low as 10 or 20 cents

A penny is pretty much the worst tip you can give -- much worse than stiffing the server, because it indicates that you weren't just forgetting to tip, but that the service was actually that bad.

Is that 15-20% of your bill?
Yes.

The custom in the US is different than in Australia. The idea of no tipping was difficult for me in Australia and I usually tipped anyhow. I heard that in Australia the servers are paid better. I also heard that at some expensive Australian restaurants, tipping is starting to be more expected.

Service in Australia is generally less friendly and I loved that. They take your order and bring your food and then go away and leave you alone instead of stopping by to see how you're doing all the time (they don't grovel for a tip).

In Chicago theres a place called the Weiners circle which is pretty much just a hotdog stand in the middle of downtown, and the girls swear it you - It's pretty funny. Then if your there after Midnight you can ask them for a chocolate milkshake or something - pay them 10 dollars, and they'll flash you.

Good food with a side of abuse and boobies! Yum Yum!

We used to have a couple of places where the waitresses were rude on purpose. They had a 50s diner vibe.

I tend to go to breakfast places where I get treated like shit because the waiters are so fucking cool, but I'll put up with anything for good breakfast food.
