I need help. my 96 blazer is dying...I probably need to get something else in the next three months. besides I can't afford the gas for it anyway.

I want a small ish econo-car. in the 10k-14k range but the less expensive the better. great gas mileage, good safety ratings.

I like the Volkswagon rabbit, but what else should i look at?

I have an '02 Galant that I love now. The newer ones get better gas mileage but still not great, around 23/30 (Mitsubishis have the largest 4 cylinder engines out there, so they pay for it in gas). BUT, they also have a deal where you can get free gas for a year now if you get a new Galant, plus 3 years free maintenance and 10 year warranty. They may be a bit too expensive and get a little bit less mileage than what you want, though. They start around 18K.

Sounds like what you're looking for is a used Honda Civic, or Toyota Corolla. No they're not unique cars, but they get great gas mileage, are very safe, and are cheaper if you get them used. They also last for at least 200,000 miles, so it doesn't matter if it's considered "high mileage" (i.e. 80,000+ miles) because it'll still run for twice as long as it already has with minimal problems.

New Civics definitely aren't between 10-14K though. My friend got one and after everything it came to at least 18K.

Jettas, Honda Accord, etc. Stuff that doesn't break down too much.

Golf or Jetta FTW. The new Rabbits are all right. They seem to be a good car they just have poor power(150hp) and are just piggish not that great of fuel economy for what they are.. I like the Mk4 VW's for a nice driver(99-04ish) You can get a nice Jetta or Golf for your price range. A buddy of mine just picked aup a 03 Jetta GLS 1.8T for $12,000, black with leather its a nice car. Or you could be cool and get an GTI. Honda Civics are also good cars. I'm just biased.;) Hot chicks in GTI's is one of my turn ons....

I heard Jettas have problems with them. I've talked to maybe 5 people about their Jettas and I've heard each time they've had to take them into the shop within the first 18 months. Do some more research into them if you're going to consider it.

Mine did fine until it was about 13 years old. But when it went, it went in the nuttiest way, and it was done. :D

But, until then, it took everything I dished out.

Volkswagens are pioneer stock, mon.

DO NOT BUY a 2001 VW Jetta!!!

I own one, and I (like many other '01 Jetta owners) have had a great many problems with it. Stupid, stupid problems.

Later models seem to work like clockwork, though. I still love my car, but I wish I had waited a year to buy it.

sweet I have alot of homework to do and test drives to conduct. thanks everyone. I'm getting ideas.

I don't care much about the looks of the car. smothing that doesn't look like a loaf of bread on wheels would be nice though. hee hee.

i drive/drove a civic and it's been great. i think it had over 100,000 miles on it when i bought it (well, my mom bought it)...that was i think 5 years ago, and i've only ever had one serious problem with it in that whole time. something happened to the head gasket, which caused my car to overheat all the time, i think it cost like $1000 to fix

beyond that, no complaints

yeah a toyota or honda. Everyone else who commented is dumb

get like a 2001/2002 or something...a corolla you could easily get one for $7k with less than 60,000 miles on it. Even ones with 100k+ can be expected to go another 100k+

Personally, I'd go with the Toyota.

I would get an Corrola over an Civic. If you decide to choose between an Honduh and Toyota. I still say get an Golf/Jetta with a 2.0L engine.... it proven

Just keep researching and take some different vehicles on a test drove and see what you like.(y)

Jettas look WAY cooler than Hondas and Toyotas. And they're damn fun to drive.

The Notorious LOL
04-02-2007, 07:59 PM
look cooler, sure...but they're shit. I have a friend who owns one and hes had to do a lot of repairs.

hands down for years, corolla or civic is always rated the highest for reliability in compact cars. They may be a bit more expensive, sure...but you easily get what you pay for. I will never own any other type of car.

i've never driven a toyota corrolla but i can say with confidence that honda civics are better because i like mine

apart from that head gasket thing, that kinda sucked. but it had over 100k miles on it, something was bound to happen at some point

^ all true.

Corollas are like some kind of ironman car. our family had a 1980 wagon and it would not stop going. parents ended up selling it after 24 years and buying a Golf which apparently has caused endless grief.

I've owned both. They're equally good cars.

Mt old GTI had over 220,000 miles on it and it was used many times on the track and driven very hard. Tranny went out at 202K. Thats it, the engine is now in my Rabbit race car, runs great. My current VW has 178K and runs like a champ. My Friends Celica's tranny went out at 77K its an 01 cost $2500 form the trans alone. I'm not going to argue about this ha ha. They all have there problems.:D

Toyota's are proven to be very reliable cars. I know multiple people with over 200K on them and still daily driving them. Good cars. Honda's the same. I just dont care dor the ride of an civic. I think Toyota had a good all around package.(y)

Most of the shit that has gone wrong with my '01 Jetta has been interior problems.

Examples:

1. The trunk latch broke

2. The windows dropped through the doors

3. The glove compartment latch broke off entirely

4. The armrest console latch broke off entirely

There might be more, but these are just stupid, stupid things to have to deal with. The only one covered under warranty was the windows. I think these issues are the product of buying the very first run of a new body style/model.

The car itself runs great and gets awesome gas mileage (24/28).

You know you own an mk4 if your window dropped through the door. lol.

If you want something American I think Pontiac grand Prix's are good cars. The only real problem I am aware of is the intake gaskets go on them because GM switch from aluminum to plastic intakes:confused: Its not a big deal if it happens really. It seems like many people have good luck with these cars.
