so

I am getting tired of medical things popping up and getting further in to debt. I keep getting so close then I get hit with something else and it's like this never ending cycle.

Anyway, point is. Because of those things I cannot get a loan for school. Not the ones I've tried for anyway. And financial aid is one thing but not enough for me to be able to survive and go to school.

For someone with shit credit thanks to medical debt, who can they go to for a loan and be approved? Even if the interest rate isn't pretty (which is to be expected in this case I would think), that's okay.

I seriously am getting to the point that I almost don't care what the interest rate is. I just want to go back to school so I can be in the job I'd enjoy. Sure I'd be paying a shit load of bills back but at least I'd have more of a desire to go to my job vs ugh this is not what I want to do with my life forever.

Any help will do because I'm clueless about loans and the like, that is, when you have shit credit.

If worst comes to worst, you could apply for credit cards for folks with damaged credit. And if you need cash, take a cash advance on them.

That is horrible financial advice, but you said you're desperate...

You *may* want to try for a student signature loan. If stafford/perkins normal loans are denying you, it's the next step. It's a private loan, so not through the government. The good news is, it has high approval rates (so you should be able to get something from them), the bad news is, it has higher interest rates. But also good news - if you get someone to co-sign the loan, someone who has good to excellent credit, you can lower your interest rate based on that.

I was looking into private loans earlier this month, because I'm not sure if I would qualify for US federal loans if I'm going to a school outside of the USA. It turns out that may not be the case, but the information I found out is really useful.

Find out more:

Oh yeah, also, look for scholarships! I'm a white-bread middle-class suburban girl with good grades, so I figured there were none out there for me (since I'm as common as they come). But I found one for people directly related to government employees, so I applied for it my senior year and got $1,000. I was pretty shocked because I thought there was nothing out there. It takes some work, but you can find something. Especially since both of your parents are Mexican, I'm more than positive they will have stuff for you. (y)

hmmm.

there's no like, banks or companies that are somewhat legit, like a decent known name, that say "sure we will give anyone a loan with 9834028% interest!"

? maybe. kind of. sort of.

I'm just looking at my options here. I'm dying to go back to school. ;P

thanks Diana. The info is appreciated. Though I think I've applied through Sallie Mae for that one and I was denied :/

yeah if I had a co-signer I wouldn't have this issue. But I have none. Just me. But that may work.

Still searching on the scholarship front. I do find a lot for latin heritage but those who are latin and going to be in science or math or something.

"heehee I'm a beaner artist" hasn't really come up yet. I'm working on it though/still looking :)

Oooh, I found another link:

That's for loan information if you've got bad credit.

people with terrible credit are able to get home loans, so there has to be some way to get student loans if you have sorta meh credit.

I imagine the rationale is that you can't repossess someone's education.

In all seriousness Crystal, call Sallie Mae. They have professionals there that get these kinds of questions all the time and will know exactly how to help you. Don't be afraid of the phone. :)

I would suggest bullshitting your way into jobs that provide an opportunity to work your way up the ladder rather than going back to school.

I say this, of course, without knowing exactly what it is you want to do.

I think it's a crime that someone your age, with your aspirations, is crippled by medical debt. What is wrong with this country? Apparently a good third of all US bankruptcies are caused by medical debt.

Is there any job that you can tolerate that would give you decent medical coverage but not sap your strength for school? Something with the government perhaps? I worked full time and went to school at night -- I could have gotten loans but I tried really hard to minimize my school debt and the upside is that I was able to pay off my student loans within 6 years instead of 20 or 30 like my friends.

Moe: Sure, Homer, I can loan you all the money you need. However,
since you have no collateral, I'm going to have to break your
legs in advance.

Homer: Gosh, Moe, I use these all the time. Couldn't you just bash my
head in?

Moe: Hey, hey: are you a loan shark? Do you understand how finance
works? [grabs a sledgehammer] Now let's do this thing.

Doh!

I went through bankruptcy in my early twenties because of medical debt. Fucking found out later that, if you can't pay, most hospitals have funds available which can wipe out your debt, gratis.

what the fuck.

they sent my shit straight to collections when I said I didn't have the money. So now I'm making payments through a credit management company. It's more than half paid off but then I just got some more within the past few months. I've already paid over a grand out of pocket since Jan 1st. :D :D :D

And fyi, I have insurance now. I pay for it myself through blue shield, I don't get it through work (probation period, wee). Oh, and that's a grand WITH insurance. I don't even want to think about without. And I just had two more bills come in that are almost another grand, fuck.

Anyway, night school would rock but I'd only be able to take two classes. The art classes are 630-930pm at night, twice a week. So I'd do one mon/wed and the other tues/thurs. Only worth three credits each though. They don't have any weekend classes around here for what I want to do and even if they did I have to do the homework at some point so I'd need the weekend for homework since m-f during the day I'd be working 8-5.

Which is fine, though I wish I could be a full time student but whatever.

Gah anyways it's all too long to explain and I appreciate the recommendations. But really, I just want to focus on the loan recommendations because believe me, I've considered everything else. Promise.

Yeah, well. Sorry about the credit card suggestions -- for some reason I read your original post as if you had exhausted ALL loan possibilities and gotten turned down.
