I'm dog sitting a jack russell and a cairn terrier. This jack russell is giving me a heart attack. I mean, to begin with, it's a house in the middle of the woods, kinda far away from civilization. And it's huge. So the hallways are all dark and there's rooms at the end with their lights off and they're huge and black and intimidating. And this dog is randomly jumping up, running to stuff, and barking. Makes me think that there's an axe murderer nearby. :-/

Last night was the first time in like 13 years where I looked under my bed to make sure no one was hiding under there.

This dog is making me nervous and scared. Is this normal behavior or am I about to act out a really gruesome scene from a scary movie soon? :(

I know that jack russells are australian dogs, and most australians like to bark and yell at nothing. so i wouldnt be worried.

Jack Russells are great dogs, but I'm sure they are also mildly retarded.

i would say the way he is behaving is normal. his owners have gone and he's probably wondering where they've got to. there could also be mice or rats in the house. they're really smart dogs though, and they're quite easy to tell what they want. call him over and see what he is barking at, and what he wants to do.

That's the thing. She'll run off to other places in the house and start barking. Mainly, she'll run upstairs and run to the big, dark bedroom at the end of the hallway and will start barking. And I'm all alone here and don't really want to go up there and see what she's barking at, because what if it's some dude with a knife? I mean, I left this morning for 5 hours and I accidentally left the backdoor unlocked. But I've been back 9.5 hours, so some dude would have come out and slaughtered me by now right?

If I die tonight, I want my bank account money to go to my brother's and Brett's tuitions. My TV and stereo are up for grabs, I suppose one of you can have it. :(

SHE'S BARKING AGAIN! Upstairs! In the scary dark bedroom with the slightly ajar door! AGGH! (n)

she's either missing her owners or has spotted vermin. one of those two options.

These dogs are very high strung. They get bored very very easily so they have to have something keeping their attention at all times. I guess this is why they bark so much. They are also diggers.

Damn, I could not deal with this everyday. Zorra, I'm taking your word for it, and I won't call the cops or anything. But if I show up in the local newspaper tomorrow, I hope you feel bad.

I fell in love with the cairn terrier, though. He brings me his toys and then wiggles his butt excitedly only he's real short so when he wiggles his butt, his whole body shakes. He fetches the toy and then drops it at my feet and barks at me to throw it for him. So cute (http://www.pets.ca/breedprofiles/a/cairn/c1.jpg). :o

aww! toto dog!

my jack russell used to be like that too, causing her to just constantly chase after her wondering what she was doing. when she turned around 8 though she calmed down a bit.

Yeah, jack russells are horribly high strung, they're difficult to train, and if the owners haven't worked hard on training they're impossible to handle. I'm spending tomorrow with two of them.

We once had a dog that got spooked at things in the house. She would suddenly see a mask on the wall (after two years of it being there) and she would lay her ears back and bark her head off until you took it off the wall and let her smell it. :p

jack russells aren't australian. the guy who bred the first one was a "reverend and hunting enthusiast" called john russell, and lived in south west england in 1795. he bred them for hunting.

i just checked wikipedia. and there is a breed called the australian jack russell, but that originated in england too.regardless i blame queen adrock for this error for not being specific.

Jack Russells are very intelligent and also very annoying. They have exceptional senses and the energy and spirit to investigate everything. This is pretty normal for them.

We always had normal dogs like Staffordshire Bull terriers and Bull Mastiffs, but then my mum started taking in those insane little bastards, and their boundless energy puts other breeds to shame.

They can actually make themselves lame through over exercising, and as young dogs vets advise owners to force them to rest, as they can keep up with a hunt for tens of miles and not get out of breath. They just don't have the sense to slow down. They are amazing hunters and can catch mice as well as cats and I've had them bring home bats, moles and once a bloody great herring gull.

They can also live for a stupid amount of time, my mum took in an old one that was 22, and I've heard of one getting to 25.
They will still act like puppies when 17 years old.

They can be incredibly distructive, and pulling up the carpet is a common complaint.
My mum's youngest once uprooted 35 newly planted young trees which she had spent the day planting, in the space of an hour.

I believe they are supernatural beings that will rise up one day, when the time is right, and become the dominant species.

I'm alive, I wasn't murdered last night. I made sure Brett Lambert called me when I went to my room though. Seriously, that house was creepy.

I'm still crossing Jack Russell terriers off the list for possible dogs I want to own in the future. I like beagles, but I hear they're pretty howly when they want to be. And they're diggers.

I want to get a medium-sized dog who is loveable. Like a lab, only smaller. Hmm.

Our beagle never howled or barked. Even if we forgot her outside in the yard in the rain she would just sit under the picnic table and wait. Beagles are difficult to train because they're smart and stubborn and they are ruled by their noses and tummies. But they're very cuddly.

The two jack russells I was with today did a lot of barking for no reason. They would hear a car drive down the street a half mile away and bark.

i've had mine for 12 years. i don't think she's gonna live a long life though - my parents seriously overfeed her. she was very hyperactive until about the age of 8 and then she was pretty much the perfect dog. so so so smart, like you could tell her a complete sentence "hey blotty could you go outside and get such and such" and she'd so it. they also have such vivid facial expressions - she'll scowl at you if she's pissed off, or smile when she's happy, or look worried when something is bothering her.
they are the most difficult dog to raise, and most of the problem is that they can often outsmart their owners. they won't follow commands unless they can see a reward for doing it.

I guess it's already been said but jack russels have boundless energy. so up running back and fourth and barking alot doesn't suprise me. I wouldn't worry about it.
