I know that nine choices probably aren't enough, and Lord knows I haven't heard every single one of his records. But I've got one playing right now and I think this poll could be interesting because I'd be really surprised if there were a consensus.
And, to keep things interesting, can we skip the live albums which re-record already released songs? (I.e. Rust Never Sleeps could qualify, but not Live Rust.) Hell, you could have a separate poll altogether of which live album is best.

I do a mean Neil Young impersonation, especially on that and "Helpless."

I'm actually stuck between
Everybody Knows this is Nowhere
After the Gold Rush
Tonight's the Night
and
Rust Never Sleeps.
Harvest has some really good stuff, but there are a couple of songs that just seem kinda rote.
This is hard.

Like alot of great artists, Neil's records, for me, switch around according to mood, time of year,etc,etc.....so right now the I'm big on "Sleeps With Angels ,Mirrorball and Live at Massey Hall 71"(just got it,soooo good!)......I'll have to vote for Harvest this morning....even though I'd be be more likely to listen to Harvest Moon or Living With War this afternoon……what a catalogue...

I think that, say, the Rolling Stones or Bob Dylan have as many stone cold masterpieces, but for some reason it's easier to pick. Maybe because their masterpieces are more similar animals or something. With Neil Young's best stuff, you really are kind of comparing apples and Volkswagens.

This is tough but for me and the amount of times I've cranked up Zuma and Ragged Glory I would have to go with either of these two albums. The whole feel of Neil Young's music is like a comfortable favorite leather jacket or a nice old chair, but with his full on Crazy Horse glory he manages to shake the dust off and really fucking jam, a complete air guitar workout.
ZUMA, I love "Don't Cry No Tears" and "Cortez the Killer" cranked up to ear bleeding volumes.
Ragged Glory is #2.

Everybody Knows this is Nowhere or After the Gold Rush.

I can't possibly decide. I probably listen to Zuma most often, but I can't say it's the best.
It doesn't count for the poll, but have any of you listened to Live at Massey Hall 1971? It's very very good.

I've really only heard Harvest so I'll go with that. It's good and most people seem to pick it as the go to Young record.
Quick question for Young fans, I saw a commercial yesterday for those box car things that some company (I believe it's a beer company) does as a publicity stunt every once in a while and it was playing a song that sounded like it was done by Young.
It was talking about taking the top off of cars and things of that sort and had a real oldies type sound to it like it could have been off Everybody's Rockin'. Anybody know if this is a Young song?

I haven't heard it, but my guess is no. I mean, this is the guy who wrote "This Note's For You," right? The whole anti-shilling song and video.
I have some vague memory of him maybe even suing some company for hiring a sound-alike, but I could be wrong on both counts.
On the Beach is mine for sure.
Really? That's one I never got into. You think it might grow on me? I don't even own a copy.

I didn't really think it was him, he just seems to cool to sell out like that but it did sound like him a little...

On a Beach is pretty good.
I love neil young.
I have all studio albums (except 3 crappy 80's ones where he uses a voice changer).
Harvest is most commercial, i prefer after the gold rush. I also love rust never sleeps and tonights the night. I think gold rush wins though.

My favourite are On the Beach and After the Gold Rush, follwed closely by Harvest and Tonight's the Night...the live at Massey Hall is really impressive, one of the best live sounds I ever heard (y)
Is still don't own any record of Neil which I don't like.

Tonights the Night is a pretty cool album, I like the looseness and overall "on the road feel to it." The actual song "Tonights the Night" Kills.
Tonight's the night,
tonight's the night
Tonight's the night,
tonight's the night
Tonight's the night,
tonight's the night
Tonight's the night,
tonight's the night.

He used to load that Econoline van
The County Library has all of the Neil Young CD's on the shelves so I'm going to amble on down there and load up my hard drive.
The Unplugged album has a version of "Needle And The Damage Done" that makes time stand still.
Still Zuma is my favorite. Love The Neil.

Yeah, that one takes a few listens. It starts off with 'Walk On' which is one of his most accessible and upbeat songs, but the rest of the album is very downbeat and it's definetely the darkest album he's ever made. It's not as fun to listen to as his other stuff but personally I think they're the best songs he's written. 'Ambulance Blues' is amazing.

I was this close to making this thread yesterday.
Eveybody knows this is nowhere i have to hold first. A couple average songs but the rest is golden. Cinnamon girl, everybody knows, down by the river and cowgirl in the sand are some of my favorite alltime tracks.
Ragged glory, zuma, harvest, rust never sleeps, tonights the night and on the beach comes in second.

How funny to see On the Beach get so much love. I haven't listened to it in years and need to check it out again, but I remember it being kind of dry and dull. I could never get my footing with that record.
...so does this mean I should give re-ac-tor another shot? :D
