He just announced he has treatable lymphoma. (http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/04/11/thompson.cancer/index.html) I don't know why someone in private life would announce that unless it was to get health issues out in the open for a run.
Who knows? -- maybe he's the viable Republican candidate. McCain, Romney, and Giuliani really don't look like any of them could get any sort of groundswell.
