if it's truly instrumental, with no vox, then i wouldn't be surprised if there were no push of a single. i mean, really, what's the label going to do with an instrumental single, forward it to the weather channel and local stations for traffic reports?

not trying to sound cheeky, i'm honestly curious.:o

There've been lots of instrumental hits in days gone by; it's not like it couldn't happen again.

it's not likely IMO, but i guess if anyone could pull it off it's the boys.

Any word on if this new "instrumental" album is truly just instrumental, or is it that they will be PLAYING thier instruments more in the songs (but still having vocals...a la Check Your Head and Ill Communication) instead of relying on just sequencers (like 5 Boroughs)?

that, my friend, is the 4 million dollar question.

i think it will just have instruments for the beats (ie pass the mic, so what'cha want) it would be a real career killer for the beasties to release a straight instrumental album, i mean come on, they are not jazz musicians. plus capitol records is a major label with some major artists, capitol is in it to make money. they would never allow a straight instrumental album from the beasties, since they do have a lot of control over what their artists release!

it's just the nature of the music business!

I'm pretty sure the Beastie Boys have earned the freedom to do what ever the F' they want.

Great, if it weren't for the fact that both of those songs make significant use of samples, which they seem to have already said they aren't doing this time. It's of course possible to sample your own music, but it's very rare for artists to sample their instruments, or those of paid performers, in the same way that borrowd samples are used. Besides, samples sound better because you get all of the compression that they used to put into analog recording technology. That's why samples taken from Protools, or taken from a digital format, are much crisper and don't sound anything like what most people think of as distinctive about sampling as an aesthetic. I like sampling and I like hip hop and I would be lying if I didn't say this is a bit of a buzzkill.

jazz isn't the only form of instrumental music, though. in fact, the majority of the beasties' instrumentals, though influenced strongly by jazz, are technically not really jazz tunes, though often pegged that by casual and less aware listeners.

I think that if they play an instrumental show at Sasquatch they will debut their new material there.

i think a better example of the instrumental backing tracks would be like, Live at PJ's from Check Your Head. Great track!
