View Full Version : Co-workers you don't mesh well with

Anyone have them? There's nothing wrong with them. They're nice people and everything, do their job, but if you would never, ever be friends with them outside of work or invite them to happy hours if it wasn't the whole company that was invited.

That's a lot like this older lady who works with me. She's 50 years old, and the rest of us are 22-23. I don't want her feeling out of the loop, but on the other hand, she doesn't really belong IN the loop. For example, I'm sending the youtube of that fat kid screaming on the roller coaster to one of my co-workers. She bursts out laughing, and says "Holy shit, that's awesome!" Naturally, the older co-worker says "What? What is it? Tell me! Don't leave me out!" So uncomfortably, I show it to her, and she says "Laughing at fat kids? Ohh, I shouldn't. That's mean." Exactly why I don't really want to send her this stuff that the rest of us laugh at.

It's just really annoying because I have to stifle my laughter at all times, otherwise she'll ask what it is I'm laughing at and want to see it, and it's usually something that people who won't be going to hell won't laugh at. And she's relentless with asking about what I'm laughing at, and makes me feel really bad if I don't show her, like I don't like her or something. It's gotten kind of obnoxious. :-/

I don't really mesh with almost any of my co-workers. We don't have a whole lot of common ground, so I can only comfortably chat with one, manage to chat with a couple of others (usually by asking them about things in their own lives), and most of the others, man, it's work, even though I like them all. They just... geez, even at lunch, they're talking about engineering stuff, housing financial things, company business, industry business... I just glaze over and leave.

I have 1 whom is grossly incompetent and routinely enables clients in the very worst way.....so profesionally I despise her ….and I have another with whom I made that fatal error of sleeping with so that's become very awkward…..otherwise my work mates are brilliant people,I’m taking some of them home with me this summer we’re that close…. I'm fortunate to have such a great atmosphere....(y)

That sucks. I worry about that with a future job. My job now, I'm a research assistant in a library, and the other girls are fresh out of college too, and we all have a lot of fun. They're the same age as me and we have the same sense of humor, so that's a plus.

Since I'm getting my MLIS degree, I'm going to probably be working with librarians in the future, and most of the stereotypes are right. They're kinda homely lookin' women, don't really like to brush their hair or anything. They're also a bunch of nerds. Which is fine, to a point. I'm a part-time nerd, I'm pretty much a dork at my job, it's part of the description. But a loooot of federal librarians are full-time nerds, which won't work when I want to get plastered at happy hour and start doing my imitation of the boss. I doubt they'd join in, which is a damn shame. :(

But it completely depends on where I go, and there are some libraries around here I know to steer clear of, so maybe I can find one that I'll like.

For what it's worth, when I worked in a library, only the boss was the librarian type. The other women I worked with were really, really fun.

A lot of my co-workers are terrible busy bodies who are extremely versed in the art of arse kissing.

It really annoys me to watch these people who are clawing their way up the ladder without a discernable ounce of talent. I'm a designer, my talents are as plain to see because they are easily weighed up against another designers work. I've always progressed through my carrer by being a better designer than the next person.

The thing is i'm slowly noticing many middle-of-the-road designers around me catch up by simply brown nosing the management. You know, organising day's out etc etc, pretty much anything that has nothing to do with the role of the job.

I just cannot get on with these people.

I wouldn't say I don't mesh well with my co-workers. But everybody that isn't on the management staff looks at me like the enemy, because I basically provide data on whether they get fired or not, and how much of a raise they may get.

The people that are on the management staff (except my boss) are all much older than me or they just don't get my sense of humour. Kind of like the "laughing at fat kids" woman. It sort of sucks the personality out of me.

I miss the good ole days of my old department having everyone the same age range, going out drinking during lunch, watching movies in the boss' office, and it being ok to call in sick/or go home early if I was hungover/too drunk to work as long as I went out later with my boss.

YES! My work thinks I'm super-valuable now, so I can take long breaks and no one gives a shit. I spend all day online, and goof off in the library with my other coworkers and it's pretty sweet. Except for that one lady, I can't be crass around her and I don't like being PC all the time.

MC Moot- trust me, not all librarians are hot. The Federal librarians are actually pretty gross. Which is why I'm excited to be joining the field, because I totally know I'll show all of them up at conferences as being "that cute young chick" among the sea of old codgers.

I hate walking past people at work that doesnt acknowledge me!

Example:

Your walking to the fax machine and a woman is walking towards you. Your all poised to say hello, but when she gets within "saying hello distance" she either puts her head down or looks straight ahead instead of looking at me for a brief second!

That really pisses me off because im a nice guy and i like to talk to everyone. One of these days im gonna start calling these people out and be like "I was gonna say hello to you, but you passed without acknowledging me, whats your fucking problem!?

That could be an all day event though.

there's a handful of guys i get along with very well from the morning crew, and i've gone to lunch with them before. all big dorks. love 'em. then there's the night crew, and one girl that no longer works there became a good friend of mine...so once she invited me to one of their after-work parties (keep in mind their shifts end at midnight or so) and i went along to make a good showing. i was the only one there not smoking weed. didn't feel too comfortable. didn't go again when invited. another girl there seemed nice enough, so i invited her to one of my parties, but when she got there was a total idiot and my friends wanted to strangle her. she also invited another girl from work without asking me, and the whole time all everyone did was make fun of them. and then the next party i had, she sort of invited herself along, until i told her we wouldn't be drinking much (lie :D). sigh. she is seriously as dumb as a bucket of bricks.

My library doesn't have late fees. We're nice. We just let them have the books however long they want, until someone else asks for it, and then we politely request for them back. If we don't get them back, then we'll go hunt them down like dogs. Dirty, filthy, stinking dogs.

Yikes....ever read that Stephen King short story "The Library Policeman"?.....;)

No, but if they had bounty hunters who showed up at their customer's houses at 3:00 in the morning demanding their books back, I can totally relate.

my manager sent me this link the other day. (http://youtube.com/watch?v=fbGkxcY7YFU)

we're all pretty meshy here. there were some people working here that I didn't get along with that well, but they all got fired. hence me working alone sometimes. I mesh alright with myself. I also just got my friend/former coworker a job here, so he should fit right in. goofballs.

you should tell that lady that she doesn't seem to have the same sense of humor as you, so she shouldn't subject herself to your youtubing.

my mom's 51, and I'm pretty sure she'd laugh at a fat kid screaming, but then be like, "ohhh, that's terrible!" and call you a "stinker". she's awfully silly though, she usually gets on really well with young people. I'll ask her if she'd like to replace your coworker, my mom likes researching stuff.

Ha! I tell her my youtubes are inappropriate but she still demands to see them, and if I'm like "I dunno..." she looks really, really hurt, like an injured puppy. And then I show them to her, she gives a kind of forced laugh, and makes some kind of comment about how she shouldn't laugh at it. And this is the same co-worker who over compliments people to the point of it being meaningless. She sent me ANOTHER email today saying "You are AWESOME! You make work worth coming in to!" and I'm like "I GET IT! GET OFF MA DICK!" She's a nice lady and everything, she just needs to stop pressuring me to include her in EVERYthing (I include her when I feel it's appropriate), and she needs to calm down with the over-praise.

Anyways, tell Mrs. Sarky that she can totally come work for us. We have positions open and urrything. And maybe she can tell my coworker to politely stfu because they're both the same age and it wouldn't be nearly as awkward for her to say it.

You should pay attention to your instincts -- it's unkind to exclude people. You're starting a career and you probably shouldn't be giggling at youtube anyhow.

Here's my tip: Don't ever make a dumpy middle-aged woman dislike you in your workplace -- whether she's your boss or your secretary, or the woman who brings you the mail. Befriend her. It's much easier than you think, and she is probably more interesting than you suspect. There will come a day when she has the opportunity to take your down or save your ass. I can't count the number of times a dumpy middle-aged woman saved my ass at work. :)
