...Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii (http://www.loc.gov/exhibits/empire/object.html), Photographer to the Tsar, made some pretty cool photos that have been reconstructed.

Roughly 1909-1912:

thats amazing!

"Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii was a color photographer before his time, who undertook a photographic survey of the Russian Empire for Tsar Nicholas II. He was able to capture color by taking three pictures of each scene, each with a different red, green or blue color filter."

when was color photography "invented"? i though it was like 50 years later.

I think that three strip processes were invented in the... late twenties, early early thirties? I know I've seen color pictures from the Depression.

So basically this guy was able to take these plates and project them, so there would be a color picture. He just didn't have any way to develop them on paper.

It's pretty nifty, to me. Photographs of this era you never get to see in color.

absolutely!

i remember reading something a little while back about some rediscovered photos of the depression that were in color. i think it was life magazine. this was in the last year, right?

this really is amazing to me. i know what you mean. like all that civil war photography. looking at an actual photograph of abrahan lincoln kind of mesmerizes me. especially the ones that have that strong high focus. like you're not supposed to be seeing them, like traveling back in time. i'd always though of photography being something that happened in the 20th century and color the last fifity years.
