It's so funny that common wisdom is that SNL was brilliant in its first years. I've been watching these discs, and it's amazing how not funny most of it is. It's so not funny that it even drags the classic bits down when they pop up.
How weird.

Im not surprised. SNL is not funny. There's some good sketches but the most of 'em suck.

I agree, most all of Saturday Night Live is not funny. I only tune in to watch the musical guests when they can manage to get a band worthwhile..
It is amazing how unfunny overall that show is.

Chris Farley was awesome. But he wasnt able to save the show all by himself.

Hell, for a while there, Dennis Miller was the best thing they had going.
I find the Belushi era to be funny. I also loved when Eddie Murphy was on the show. I have always watched SNL and get at least a couple of belly laughs even today. You have to weed thru the bad skits but there are always a couple very funny moments.

There's some great, really great sketches. But as I said, the most of them pretty much suck. =P

TOO HOT IN THE HOT TUB! OWW!
I pulled out the Kill My Landlord poem in A to the Z's rental thread.
Billy Crystal was good. Will Farrell was good. Guests can make it very funny. I love when Christopher Walken is on and we get to go to The Continental. I love when Alec Baldwin is on.

I never thought Baldwin was a good actor until the first time I saw him on SNL. He was in most of the skits, acting with real variety, and he outshone fucking everybody else. He looked like the only pro on the show. (y)
I have really become a big Alec Baldwin fan. He is great on 30 Rock. He was hilarious last night on Letterman. I find him very funny and he has acted very well in some dramatic roles.
Not to mention that he tried to undress Skye with his eyes.

christopher walken, alec baldwin, steve martin, and tom hanks were the best hosts SNL ever had! ;)

Yeah, SNL as with any sketch show, is terribly hit or miss. They have some brilliant ideas but usually the sketches are 2 or 3 times longer than they should be and that kind of ruins it.

Glengarry Glen Ross, the Aviator, The Departed...
He turned down the lead in Memento. I love Guy Pearce in that, but the Alec Baldwin version of Leonard Shelby would've been interesting to see, too.
I watched Glengarry Glen Ross a couple of weeks ago on Encore. I missed the beginning. I must have missed Alec. All I got was Pacino, Arkin and Spacey which was not so bad. Did Baldwin only make it in the beginning?

An example of a very unfunny skit. And man, how I hate this blond chick. She annoys me in a higher level.

You can find his cameo on YouTube. It's only about seven minutes, but he takes over. The only time I've ever seen Ed Harris look intimidated.
It'd probably have more impact if you watched it from the beginning, though.
Did you get to see the scene between Pacino and Jonathan Price? All kinds of awesome.

Well, you were correct about her Dakota Fanning skit. It was painful.

I still watch SNL faithfully every week....usually good for the intro skit, the guests monologue,Weekend Update and hopefully a Robert Smigel joint...plus the "filmed" bits are almost always entertaining....I'll always miss Jack Handey's "deep thoughts".....but I don't think there is currently one recurring sketch that I really dig.....the Edie Murphy years were great if you can erase Joe Piscopo,Robert Downey was a train wreck to watch....the Mike Myers and Martin Short periods were fun as well......
Why can't someone buy some play doh and resurrect Mr Bill's career?

I think it needs to be said again:
Chris Farley on SNL fucking ROCKED. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jAsZhGU6qY)
GAP girls, Ditka, Matt Foley, Chippendale's, all of them. Loooove it.
"Uh, yeah, I don't work at the CRAP anymore. I work at a coffee place called Jitters! It's called Jitters because that's what you get after you drink the coffee! NYA HAHAHAHAHA!"
"Oh yeah? Do you eat at a place called Get Sweaty because that's what you do after you eat? NYA HAHAHAHA!"
It's gotta be my most favorite exchange from SNL ever.

I actually really like Will Forte from the new cast. His rendition of Zell Miller was amazing. He got the vein on the forehead down and everything.

My fave Farley bit:
Chris Farley: You remember when you were with the Beatles?
Paul McCartney: Yes.
Chris Farley: That was awesome.
Chris Farley: Remember when you were with the Beatles and you were supposed to be dead, and there were all these clues, like you play some song backwards and it'd say, like "Paul is Dead" and everybody thought you were dead and, um, that was a hoax right?
Paul McCartney: Yeah, I wasn't really dead.
Chris Farley: I think we got time for one more question. Remember when you were in the Beatles and you did that album Abbey Road and at the very end of the song, it went: 'And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make'. You remember that?
Paul McCartney: Yes.
Chris Farley: Um, is that true
Paul McCartney: Yes,I'd have to say it is.
Chris Farley: Remember when I was talking to you about the Terminator?
Paul McCartney: Yeah.
Chris Farley: You should see that movie. It's pretty awesome.

Yeah, I thought the show was better once Bill Murray joined and they figured out how to use Jane Curtain (still the funniest woman in the history of that show). I was really young, but I never liked the Blues Brothers and I didn't like most of the skits involving that old guy who was always on did -- I can't think of his name!!! He played the babysitter. ERRR. I have "Orson Bean" stuck in my head and it's NOT him.
I think it probably helped if you were high. It was also rather novel to have someone like Fran Tarkington or Ralph Nader host a variety show back then. And it did break rules.

I have seen a shiteload of films that apparently originated on the show. But I have no idea what the show itself really is.

The thing is it's easy to roll off maybe 50 very funny skits from SNL, the problem is wading through the thousands of lamely written and poorly acted skits.
I DVR the show for music, I usually give a skit the one minute rule for laughter. Once you've edited out the commercials and unfunny bits of SNL, it's about a 14 minute show if you like the band.......... otherwise it's a 5 to 6 minute show.
I was always fond of Norm Mcdonald, his wise ass Weekend Update cracked me up. After the announcement that Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley planned to divorce, Macdonald joked about their irreconcilable differences on Weekend Update: "She's more of a stay-at-home type, and he's more of a homosexual pedophile."
Plus his gum chewing Burt Reynolds portrayal was hilarious.
