View Full Version : How does this make any sense?

My friend is moving to Wisconsin. I'm moving to Edmonton. We agreed we'd meet up sometime because she's not too far away (in comparison to where the rest of my friends will be living).

To visit, she would take a shuttle to Minneapolis and fly from there - it would cost $523, roundtrip.

If I were to go from DC at the same time, it would cost me $490 roundtrip, and I would have to switch planes in Minneapolis.

So if she were to purchase a flight from DC - Edmonton, she would save $33 if she just printed out the tickets and threw away the DC-Minneapolis portion of the trip.

What the hell?!

Yeah I've read it over a few times and I'm still not sure what the gist is supposed to be...

it really doesnt make any logical sense

but my best guess is that it has to do something with their hub locations and what not

Whew. It's not just me, then.

Whew. It's not just me, then.

If I want to go to Edmonton from DC on a plane, I go DC-Minneapolis-Edmonton. I switch planes in Minneapolis. It costs me $490 to do this.

If my friend wants to go to Edmonton from Minneapolis, a straight flight, it would cost $533.

How is it cheaper if I have an extra leg of the trip (DC to Minneapolis)?

Gotcha. Now it makes sense.

Same carrier, I assume?

Yeah, I really don't know. Seems like in taxes you'd pay extra, since you're using three airports.

Bizarre.

That's what I said. I told her maybe she should just purchase the DC-Minneapolis-Edmonton tickets, and throw away the DC-Minneapolis tickets.

I was just wondering if anyone else has come upon something like this. I thought it'd be half as much, since it's half the distance, but it's not!
