What is your preference when listening?

Do you like the older LTI, PB, CYH Beastie Boys compared to the newer IC, HN, TT5B 'Boys?

I love the old boys, and I think the new album could be a flashback...

Yea man.

Not as many songs that i can listen to in their entirety. I like Root Down, The Scoop, Intergalactic, Check it Out, Brrr Stick Em, etc., but there are others that I dont like.

Agreed.

I am mesmorized by PB and LTI, and songs like Jimmy James, In 3's and others on CYH are good, as well.

I think they put a lot of biscuit crumbs in the equipment on those older albums to achieve the much-lauded 'dry' sound. And they cleaned everything in the studio with Ginger Beer and Chilli.

Yes! LTI is good but its like a joke ya know? Pretty much the only songs that dont annoy me on that record are brass monkey, paul revere, and no sleep till Brooklyn. PB is in my opinion, the best record they have ever made. I like the raps, and some of the instrumentals on CYH & IC. The raps on HN are good, and I liked TT5B but the political crap is such a boner kill on that cd. (n) (and I say that metephorically!!)

Who cares if they were serious on LTI? I can listen to Slow Ride, Slow and Low, Paul Revere, No Sleep, basically everything but Girls forever.

PB is great.

I dont care if they were serious or not. I dont know, LTI is one of those albums that you love to hate. I love that album, of course because its the Beasties, but then, it annoys the shit outta me you know? I can NOT listen to F4YR for anything, it just annoys the piss outta me. It is a good CD when you wanna be cheered up though. I love that about it.

Why is CYH old school, but IC is new school? They are practically the same record.

Guess this all means the new album is gonna be on some Grad School tip.

They transitioned smoothly over time, there is no clear division. I personally think their best works are Paul's Boutique and Check You Head, but Hello Nasty deserves credit for being sexcellent in many many ways.

Party for Your Right to Fight is a badass song.

Then at the hour of twelve
Some force cut the power
And emerged from hell
It was your so called government
That made this occur
Like the grafted devils they were

I always love the Beasties, but their first 3 albums put together obliterate anything they did after Check Your Head. The first 3 albums were bonafide classics, the last 3 were all very solid, but not on the level of the first 3.

For my personal tastes, Check Your Head is probably my favorite album of all time, actually. Fucking brilliant.

Why did you split CYH with IC? They are practically the same body of work, not to mention the smallest space of time between two beastie lp's.

Infact, other than those two I'd have a separated them into albums not two halfs.

AND isn't TT5B technically old skool anyways.

word. they're library would be better divided into thirds. LTI & PB, CYH & CYH, and HN & TT5B, but even then it's still a dramatic stretch. they change too often to even attempt to split their career into just two or three eras. no offense to you, kind sir, but it's actually a pretty bogus question.:o

This is exactly right about cyh and ic. I look at it like this

LTI - Old school (Like First grade)

PB - Fourth grade but With advance placement Grammer

CYH - Middle school, Grade 9
IC - The summer between grade 9-10 to finish a paper they did not complete

HN - Their Senior year thesis using most all they have learned in the past.

TTFB - Their first year at an online non accredited college (no external producer, mac pro beats, etc). It tried to be old school but did not work that well unfortunatly.

The funny thing was in LIT they say 'never old school, all brand new'. Its a funny statement considering that was still in the dawn of mainstream hip hop.

Yeah, funny given the style was 10-plus years old at that point.

I was thinking about this lately. I re-listened to all their albums with a 2-week span on the drives to work. I think Hello Nasty is my favorite. I love Ad-rocks beats on that thing, and the rhymes are up there with the best.

Not saying any of the other albums are lacking, just that HN is my favorite. PB and CYH are great albums. Ill Comm was pretty darn good too. The best thing about the group is that each album has it's own unique personality. No one can dispute that.

Some days I like Ill Communication.

Some days it's Hello Nasty.

Other days it's To the Five Boroughs.

Yet other days it is Paul's Boutique.

While still other days it is Check Your Head.

Sometimes it is Licensed to Ill.

Aglio E Olio, The In Sound From Way Out, Sounds of Science, and various other LPs or EPs like Root Down sneak in there was well.

I guess it depends on what day it is, what phase the moon is, and the kind of mood I'm in in order to decide.

What do you guys think of O-school v. N-school BB's when it comes to lyrics?

They got a lot more political after check your head, do you guys think that's good or bad?

I for one, like the fact that they stopped rhyming about women and guns and whatnot and started to wake up a bit, but I maybe be in the minority.

In terms of lyrics, Licensed To Ill and Pauls Boutique destroy everything else. Not fair to compare.

Political Rap Sucks.

I dont even really mind the political raps that much. But the rhymes in LTI and more specifically PB are just so incredibly smart and clever that I think it'd be impossible for them to top it.

And its not just the Beasties, either. Most rappers newer work usually doesnt stack up to their older stuff, because as younger guys their willing to say more stuff that they feel silly rapping about as older guys. So in a sense, the older a rapper gets the more limited he is in what he can and cant say.

That's not true. If you read the lyrics for Hello Nasty and To The 5 Boroughs I promise you will see words you don't even know the meanings of!

I think the Beasties rhymes have become more and more clever of age. So clever in fact they make others listening not interested because people don't know what the hell they are saying or talking about.

Take Intergalactic for example....

Everyone knows the opening of the song and the first line...now dont you tell me to smile.....after that the average person is like "da da da da dum"

Regarding the question asked here:

To me, the new school beastie boys sound more old schooled than THE "old school beastie boys" did.

In closing.... The Beastie Boys are just too clever for us!

When I get in the mood for some Beastie Boys, there are three albums I turn to.

LTI, PB and oddly, TT5B...

There are singles here and there that I love as well. Super Disco Breakin' being one, but I am a child of the old school.
I love their entire collection, but my favs are still the earlier works. Not because they're better as such, but because of what they mean to me personally.
