View Full Version : What puts you to sleep?
I've been completely restless for the past two weeks and it's killing me. I can always find something to do/read/work on/play and it's almost as though I don't have any time to just be "bored". I would have thought this would be a good thing, as I am trying to be productive, but it's wrecked my sleeping habits... obviously. Look at the posting time. I'm not looking for advice as I am just curious as to...
...what you do in the situation that you couldn't sleep? Besides listening to Kenny G, watching Survivor, or reading abcdefz's posts. Too obvious.;)

masturbation!
haha, only joking. or.. am i?
now i have no problem sleeping because i'm so tired all the freakin' time. i know what you mean about being restless though. when i didn't have a job my flatmate and i had totally screwed sleeping patterns. we'd be waking up at lunchtime and going to bed at 7am, not able to sleep. watching air crash investigation and WHEN GOOD PETS GO BAD 12 all evening, making prank calls and drinking too much. it got really bad. we'd start crying for no reason. i didn't see sun for 6 weeks or something. haha. our other flatmate had to physically drag us out of bed to get our body clocks back in order.
after that i started going for walks at night, that's always good. anything to get your mind all zen, yo.

I go through big bouts of insomnia as I do alot of nightshifts, and kind of 'go past' being tired. Then become overtired and cry at dead woodlice on the bathroom floor.
They say you shouldn't watch TV in bed, although I find if I put it on sleep mode, then have a DVD of something warm and well known like Simpsons playing, I can nod off.
The other thing I do is the yoga/meditation technique of a calming breath.
Lay comfortably, and breath in slowly (through nose) for four seconds, then breath out again (also through nose) for another four.
A regular, equally measured breath is what you do in sleep, so when done awake It tells the body to slow down. I also do it before job interviews, etc.

masturbation.
its the answer to everything.
I have really bad periods of broken sleep. For weeks on end I can go to bed and lie there until morning comes without a single wink of sleep. It really screws me up and affects my persona during the day. It comes and goes and I have no idea why. It's got to be a mental thing, because I'm quite hyperactive during the day and therefore feel pretty tired when I get ready for bed.
I'm in this phase right now, even typing this feels like a chore (n)

real time with bill maher or countdown with keith olberman works for bobby every single time, and he doesn't even mean to fall asleep during those shows.
i play solitaire games on my palm pilot or monopoly on my gameboy advance sp. yes, i'm still using both of those things, even though they're very old.
I used to watch [adult_swim] and fall asleep to that. Haven't watched television in ages, it seems. It's that pesky Inuyasha... so boring. I guess recently the tiredness is there and the sleepiness isn't popping up. Oh well, it's not a problem yet. The snake pulling doesn't seem to help as much as the Italian Chandelier position.
Reading! I still need to finish Buddha 1. (http://www.amazon.com/Kapilavastu-Buddha-Vol-Osamu-Tezuka/dp/1932234438) Instead I'm reading about how this girl I had some design classes was the top graduate of the art dept and has done a video about ironing, which is news to me. Not quite healthy as I had a thing for her a while back. She's still cute though.

Attivan, sex,James Joyce....but I've found that going for a swim after work is the thing the works best for me,I'm just finished when I hit the sheets......(y)
I have a hard time getting to sleep so I have no answer.
I just started that Lunesta shit. I only take it every once in a while but it definitely knocks me out....but if I don't get a full 8 or 9, then I am worthless the next day at work.
Also Full House used to work really good. I think I watched it every single day, but still have never seen a full episode. Perfect sedative.

You know what used to put me to sleep? The opening minutes of The Magnificent Ambersons. Orson Welles is narrating about 19th century Indiana in this really gentle near-murmur for something like ten or fifteen minutes. It took me about four tries to watch that movie all the way through because I would just doze right off, and I'm not a doze right off kind of guy by a long shot.
It's a terrific movie. It's just that voice.

I don't really understand why isn't not good to watch t.v. I mean, maybe for some people, but I always put the t.v. on before bed if I'm alone. otherwise, I'll just lay there thinking too much or every creek and crack in the house becomes amplified and way annoying.
edit: masturbation.

Riding on the Metro after concentrating at work for 8 hours. Though that probably doesn't help you and would only give you an hour of sleep until they kick you off at the other end of the line.

you'd want to be in bed when you fall asleep tho no? i think the best tip i read recently is try to stay awake. like... each time you get that drifting off feeling make yourself wake up. after about 3 goes, you go to sleep. it worked for me when i was awake at 3am the other night.

watching something on TV that I am interested in, but not interested in enough that I force myself to stay awake, works for me.
That's all I can recommend from my personal experience anyway. That or masturbation like many said. Or sex. Working out also promises me that by the time 10pm hits, I want to burry my head in a pillow and pass out.

a can of beer in the late evening usually does it for me. Just the one though, if i have more than one im in drinking mode, and that's a whole big other nest of problems.
Oh and reading in bed.

I had almost the same problem a few years ago, I felt tired all the time and at some point, I even lost my sense of humor(lame. I was in a shitty emo mood, also), it was like "Groundhog Day (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0107048/)", it went on for months, until I finally got tired of it and decided I'd sleep only 2 or 3 hours a day until I'd completely fix my sleeping schedule. It's not exactly the healthiest thing to do, but it worked for me. It took me less than a week to get everything back to normal.
I can no longer sleep with out the tv on. I've watched my dvds so many times that I now watch them with the directors commentary on. I could tell you so much boring trivia about futurama or the Kevin Smith movies (y)
Also Full House used to work really good. I think I watched it every single day, but still have never seen a full episode. Perfect sedative.
The telethon episode would be the best. I'd probably be out before Mike Love's special guest appearance.
I'm thinking Lunesta as a drastic measure as I am (sort of) back to a regular schedule. It used to be I'd stay up for a day and 3/4 and it'd fix itself. Thank goodness I don't have to be on call anymore. This spring transition is insane though. We're getting fucked up weather left and right and I think it's having an effect on a lot of things. That and girls are wearing less clothing now.

This was put to the test last night. I was watching 28 days later for the first time and half way through the power cut off (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/scotland/north_east/6598653.stm) (btw, what a film to be watching and have a power cut happen). I got my phone and started playing tetris and worms and still couldn't sleep. After about an hour of rolling around I managed to nod off. Ironically I was woke up an hour later when the power came back on turning on my tv and dvd player.
