View Full Version : Best '50s Rocker?

In listening to the Rhino box set, "Loud, Fast & Out Of Control: The Wild Sounds of '50s Rock," it really hits home how much '50s music kicked ass. Specifically THIS kind of '50s music this set is focusing on: the deranged rock/rockabilly/R&B of the day, the kind that literally scared parents and the government into thinking the youth went dilinquent (so NO, not doo-wap tripe, even though I like that stuff too). It was a repressed, conformist time, so it was great to see the youth restless.
There were tons of rockers in the era who are awesome, so I'm finding this poll particularly tough.

there's some greats up there, but there's only one Little Richard.

He didn't rock the hardest, but my pick is Buddy Holly. A true artist, and he made some really eccentric ideas come off perfectly in performance, arrangement, and production. Plus, the guitar solo on "Peggy Sue" is my favorite so far. Beautifully played, timed, and tasty as hell.
All this in 18 months. :(
If I were going to go for hardest rocker of all of them, it's Jerry Lee without a doubt. If punk didn't spring from there, I don't know where.
Buddy on account of the excellent musical I saw in liverpool a few years back.

My God. That moment when he calls Julian Lennon "John," and then reassures him that he'll be as great as John someday... Julian's face goes so white...

oh yeah.....I love when he goes at it with Keith Richards over the right way to play the intro to Johnny Be Good.....Richards: "Working with Chuck,man...it's a little like I've ordered the strait jacket and am allowing 4 - 6 weeks for delivery,man"....(y)

sure the songs were good, but in comparison, Buddy Holly was like having your accountant play rock n' roll. Little Richard, on the other hand, is batshit insane.

I almost stuck Ronnie Hawkins on, but I think I decided to put Fats Domino in his place, I think. Plus, I already stuck Screamin' Jay Hawkins on here, so I figured I'd just stuck with one Hawkins. ;)
Thus, that's why I put the "Other" option since there's many terrific '50s artists big and small.

My favorite thing about XM radio is the 50s station. I've got XM in my rental car and we drove around all day rocking to the 50s.
I don't love any particular artist -- I love the individual singles.

Am having a hard time choosing between Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis.
But yeah, I can't get enough of that shit, man. It's exciting because it was all so real, nothing today sounds nearly so raw, so fresh. No wonder parents were scared.

Link Wray. Although most of his stuff was released in the early '60s, he released his first single in '58, so I hope that counts

It does, and he's responsible for "Rumble" so that's all you need to state your case. (y)

If by "experience," you mean documentaries and writings of the era, then... yeah.
