Theres a hip hop debate going on in Hyde Park, Ill right now. I guess thier having yet ANOTHER debate as to wether or not hip hop is offensive and the lyrics are too influential. Stupid shit like that again that they keep trying for and will never go through. The censorship program was the best thing that ever happened to the music industry. I guess Russell Simmons has proposed that certian degrading and racist words be banned from all the music.

They keep trying to get shit banned and stopped and its never gonna happen so I dont know why they even bother. If Marilyn Manson hasnt been censored yet then were a long way for gettin Snoop censored.

yes, and an extensive history in tagging you have.

ok that probably came across harsh. You seem pretty level headed and smart for your age and you generally have a good sense music-wise....you're trying too hard though.

hyde park is actually a neighborhood on the southside of chicago, not a town.

and I think it's stupid to get pissed off about a bunch of people getting together to discuss an issue like this. It's also stupid that as a female, you would get upset that women are standing up for their rights.

it's a panel discussion and there isn't a call to ban rap/hip hop. they're just talking about what effect the lyrics and attitudes perpetuated by certain artists have on our culture and society. you're in denial if you think it doesn't affect anything.

and russell simmons proposed a voluntary ban on certain words.

find something better to be angry about.

i think that was pretty cool of him to do. everyone's all like "oh that'll never happen, rap's all about those words" but it wasn't always like that. if you listen to earlier stuff, like eric b & rakim's paid in full, there aren't even any swears on it worse than "damn" (well, one of the songs is apparently censored, but still). earlier stuff didn't rely so heavily on it. i'd like to see rap move away from it, but i dunno if anyone's gonna listen to him

i blame eazy-e

I wouldn't blame Eazy-E, he even had the business smarts to make several swearing-free songs on his first album so they could be playedo n the radio. I would blame Schoolly D, if anybody.

its chicken or the egg. Go to your average inner city neighborhood and pay attention to the conversation used and you find it resembles a lot of what you hear in rap. One could blame rap for it, or one could say rap is simply a product of the environment.

A newspaper here (fuck a link) proposed that a committee of mothers, nurses, church members and such be charged with deciding what sort of stuff kids should be listening to, like what Tipper Gore tried to do.

That's pretty much a group of people likely to be offended by advertisements, let alone hip-hop music. I fear for these dumb fucks. The music would be like a snuff ganbang film starring their mothers, made for their ears.

There's been recent hooplah around Snoop Dogg, and politicians saying "By Jingoes, he's not the kinda bloke we want here!". They see idiot kids emulating the lyrics, they don't see rap artists just being regular lames, either with a lot of money they'll lose soon, or with good lives built for their families and loved ones out of a lifetime of entertaining.

If my kid listened to rap music, I'd have raised somebody smart enough to see the bullshit in the lyrics. Not some dickweed who beats up kids and drops out of school, who's parents blame 'rappers'.

Personally, I see rap as always having reflected the environment, days and times.

Pretty much just me saying stuff^^^^

its a scapegoat and little else.

every musician that children have idolized has always been seen by their parents generation as a bad influence. Fuck, people blamed Bill Halley and the Comets for inciting riots. I think the generation gaps are narrowing a bit though. I look at what most 17 year olds listen to now and Im like "fuck that stupid bullshit".

my favorite schoolly d song has one curse word -- damn. unless you count the intro where it's saying "you're a negro" but i don't think that really counts.

Yeah man. My mother is herb as fuck, and she used to get at me about Straight Outta Compton. I pretty much said if I do anything stupid that could be blamed on a rap lyric, she could disown me. She was cool with that. Her only problem was that I was so young.

Funnily, when I was into 'The Chronic' I was also into 'Dirty' and one of the lyrics in 100% talked about shooting a dude in the head. I always found that contrast pretty funny.

As much as I don't like to say it, conservative white people are probably pretty intimidated by their kids choosing African-American 'thugz' as their role models. But that's the surface shit. It almost comes down to the problem white people have with a black man teaching them the meaning of civilization.
