View Full Version : what does anti-american mean anyway?

I'm English so I don't get it. Whenever anyone is a critic of US foreign policy etc. they are are accused of being anti-american. Why is it that complaining about any aspect of America makes you anti-american? By that logic Bush can do whatever the hell he wants and if you complain you hate the entire country. Also you're only American because you were born there so why do people act like you've chosen to be there and shouldn't complain.
DroppinScience

When "anti-American" is used in that manner (same when the Democrats get accused of being "anti-American" by the Republicans), it's just a way to stifle debate over U.S. interventions abroad.

True. Also, it depends on the way you phrase it, I've found out. I take personal offense to broad, generalized comments because it sounds like people overseas hate the PEOPLE of our country, and not just the government. When I hear shit like "You Americans should have never invaded Iraq" it's like...welp, I'm an American, I didn't personally invade Iraq, and I was against the war from the get-go. So hearing stuff like that is a slap in the face. Saying "Your government should have never invaded Iraq" is acceptable, we can all agree that it was indeed, our government who made the decision.
If people don't agree with our actions overseas or other decisions our government has made, in no way do I think they're un-American, otherwise that make ME un-American too, which I am definitely not. I love my country, I just don't agree with some of the things we do.

yeah, that pisses me off. i hate it when people say stuff like "fucking americans, you're so yadda yadda". even if they have a legitimate point, it just automatically puts me on the defensive, because i feel like i'm being attacked. even if i'd otherwise agree with what they're saying, my first inclination is to try and argue against whatever they're saying. don't talk like that you fucking foreigners (ha ha, a joke), it doesn't help. i'm an american but hey, i'm just walkin' here, don't mind me

I understand that completely, but the unfortunate thing is that the way America carries itself on the world stage (especially in these Bush years), it makes things VERY hard to realize, in the eyes of a foreigner, that NOT all of America is this way. Broad generalizations are crude either way, but since America builds itself to be the greatest nation, the world's savior, the best thing since sliced bread, etc., the U.S. is held to a far different standard when America fails to live up to the ideals it purports itself to be.
With the exception of a few flippant cases (e.g. Ace being convinced every man, woman and child in America is either a simpleton or full-blown retarded; the odd petty outburst from an Australian member), I think most non-Americans here realize that not every American is the same and can discern between a neo-con evangelical and a hippie in San Francisco.
I dunno, I'm sure if Kid Rock stops wearing the American flag as a poncho, America's image abroad will improve. :p

I suppose they are jealous of the fact that our leaders are able to subjugate us in a country where the people hold the real power?
Until the philosophy that holds one race superior and another inferior is finally and permanently discredited and abandoned, then everywhere is war.
I think take a film like borat is anti american, going for easy targets that every country has to make a smug point "haha aren't amaricans a bunch of brain wrong gun totting, homophobic, sexist, daft racists. how more civerlized we are. Seems thats anti american attitude i would frown upon.

It's widely accepted to think that American "stupid people" are dumber than other "stupid people" because it's a stereotype that we've got a bunch of backwards redneck retards roaming the streets here. There's stupid people anywhere, not just America.
It also doesn't help to have people shooting videos showing the idiocy of the average American, when no one will go around and try to do the same in other countries for a balanced view of "Hey, look, there's retards ANYWHERE you go."
Broad generalizations are crude either way, but since America builds itself to be the greatest nation, the world's savior, the best thing since sliced bread, etc., the U.S. is held to a far different standard when America fails to live up to the ideals it purports itself to be.
That's like the chicken or the egg idea though. Is it because other people treat us like we're supposed to be a savior (calling the US for aid in countries abroad when conflict arises) that we act like we are one at other times? Do we build ourselves up, or does it happen naturally from other people confirming the idea that we are supposed to be saviors during times of need?
I'm not talking about Iraq here. There are many instances that the US is called upon for help, along with the UN. Darfur, Rwanda, Tibet, all of those. They come to us and asked for help because they believe us to be saviors. Granted, America hasn't really done shit about any of those situations in the past and probably won't in the future which really pisses me off how we pick and choose what's considered "important", but there's something to be said that we're asked for help in the first place. Is it because we beat our chest and call ourselves saviors so they figure they should ask us, or is it because they naturally do think that we have power and can truly do something for them?
I think it's a little of both. It's hard to get away from it, too - I'd say "Don't ask America for help" if you don't want us to get cocky and start acting like we're world police, but on the other hand, we are the world police and we're needed in situations like that, so they should try to get help from us when necessary. It's very circular.
DroppinScience

Well, the fact that America beat Hitler and re-built all the war-stricken nations through the Marshall Plan kinda places you in the "savior" category.

Yeah, but it's the attitude that many Americans have when they think of themselves and their place in the world. You know, "America #1! U-S-A! U-S-A! We saved your ass in World War II!" To which the Brit replies: "True, but we saved YOUR ass in World War III" ;) (Simpsons reference)

True, I think the whole "we saved your ass in WW2" thing is dumb, because it's arguable that the Russians could have done it themselves. By the time we had stepped in, major parts of the German war machine had already been defeated. The Luftwaffe fell into decline and was eventually destroyed after 1940 and the Battle of Britain, which we didn't have anything to do with. The Russians had been kicking some ass on the eastern border, just because we stepped in doesn't mean it wouldn't have been ended and won by the Allies if we hadn't.
But as for the first part, if no one believes us to be a savior, then why do they call on us during times of need? It's just going to reaffirm the idea that a lot of Americans think we're the best country in the world if everytime a catastrophe happens, we're called for help.

Quite fallacious.
The Russians MAY have defeated the Germans without the US, but Britain would have capitulated without American Lend-Lease and Hitler's asinine decision to declare war on the US on Dec. 10, 1941.

That's why I said "basically." The Chinese, as you well know, were thoroughly thrashed by the Japanese, losing both of their capitals and much of their commerical outlets. The Communists and Nationalists did the best they could under sumpremely disadvantageous circumstances, and their bravery is not be dismissed lightly, however without American intervention, China as we know it today would be a Japanese vassal state.
The ANZAC troops, not to mention the Indian troops in the CBI, were exceptionally heroic and brave, making contributions to the war effort that aided the Americans in ousting the Japanese. The US, you cannot fail to acknowledge, however, did the vast majority of heavy lifting to defeat the Japanese. The Aussies did not have the fleets to stop the Japanese fleets if the Japanese had intended to conquer Australia. Without American involvement, the ANZAC nations would have been relegated to economic domination by the Co-Prosperity Sphere (they would have been forced to accept Japanese control of the Indonesian oil and cutoff of supplies through interdiction by the Japanese fleet).
No, more to dismiss for the hollow, chest-thumping jingoism that prompts the making of threads like these.

He also, rather more famously, proclaimed that Britain would never surrender. I don't think it would have been quite so easy for Hitler as you make it out to be.
The Chinese, as you well know, were thoroughly thrashed by the Japanese
Yeah, the same way the Russians were thoroughly thrashed by Napoleon. China was a country occupied but nowhere near conquered; the Japanese might have held the ports and major cities, but that was all. They didn't hold the roads or the rail lines or the countryside, their grip on what territory they did hold was tenuous and precarious at the best of times, and their stocks of men, munitions, and supplies were insufficient to sustain even this position. If the Japanese had not extended their operations into the European colonial territories in southeast Asia - with their reserves of oil, rubber, and other essential war materiel - they would have been forced to retreat from their attempt to make a Chinese empire. China would never have been a vassal state of Japan, with or without the outside intervention that the Japanese brought on themselves.
The US, you cannot fail to acknowledge, however, did the vast majority of heavy lifting
This is true. It doesn't justify your obnoxious attitude though.

I know Bush is an asshole that should have been impeached. Yet, I have done many jobs in the mid east in which I've had to clean up messes cause of him but, he's NOT AMERICA.
but america voted him TWICE, i know no one on this board did but many other americans did
america is now an insult that owns the whole world
i dont know what the hell im saying here, im just bored

some people got serious issues - just because someone expresses a view that might be oppposed to yours, you have to call them a retard..
if you supposedly 'clued' up yanks cannot see what a fucked up your country and the' american culture' is... then i suggest a trip out of your country, to the real world.
this doesn't mean that all americans are twats, or that there is nothing good to come out of the U.S.. (my obssession with the beaties is proof of that).
But the mainstream, and even main-subversive culture of the US is way removed from a real sense of connection with anything other than itself. You guys live in a bubble, where your media is controlled to a level the Nazi's would be proud of.
If you get offended by that then cool, it's your right :p ... and also your right to call me a retard too.... oh and the right to go directly to guantanamo, without passing go :D
Yeah and my whole rantings were just a release of boredom too. I could really give two shits what people think of americans. What matters is what people think of me and honestly, I can care less as well.
I don't remember filling out any dream destination sheet and checking america before I was born.
And you too, Corky. STFU

Exactly. She's kind of like the anti-American equivalent to Toby Keith. (n)

see, this, this is what i'm talking about when i say you're being a dick.
i'm not even trying to be all that spiteful, i'm just objectively saying, you're a jerk. few people would read your posts and disagree with that evaluation. and how do you respond? by being a dick, and making it personal no less.

lol @ sam. most of the places where I've lived, people actually look down on America in cultural terms. prevailing opinion with most people I have known is that there's something rotten at the core of US society.
that's my experience and opinion as well
