there always seems to be attitudes amongst residents of either that the other is stupid for residing where they do. Personally, I think the suburbs suck. A lot of them in my immediate area have the charm of a dentists office with many strip malls and townhomes constructed two or three years ago. Most suburban dwellers, on the other hand, find the idea of living within the city intimidating because "they'll get shot" or "theres too much traffic".

You'll get shot in these suburbs and there's too much traffic.
I live in a rural area :)
nobody drives in the city, there's too much traffic
i dunno, i've lived in both. they're both ok

The reason there's too much traffic in the city is because of all the suburbanites who insist on driving around here bitching and moaning about how hard it is to find a place to park.

I like the city better than the suburbs because there's more stuff to do and I don't need to own a car. also, there's more people and things to look at. the possibility of getting shot thing only makes city living more exciting. DANGER!
some older suburbs can be very nice, but the new ones with the mini mansions freak me out. THEY'RE BUILT ON INDIAN BURIAL GROUND!

yeah I should have clarified inner ring versus outer ring suburbs. The ones bordering the city are generally okay, because they have history. Theres maybe three or four of them in the metro area here I would consider residing in. Its not just some soul sucking void that was placed there a short time ago. I like to know about the history of the city I am in...the neighborhoods, whats changed, whats remained the same...the culture. All of those are generally lacking in a spot that 20 years ago was fields and grain silos.

i have lived in both, and i have no problem with either. i currently live downtown, and i really don't take advantage of it like i should. i'll regret that when i live in the suburbs again, which is about the only place i'll ever be able to afford to own a home.

I don't care either way. I'd like to live in a city due to its convenience and night life, but on the other hand, I love that my rent here in the suburbs is $510 a month, plus I have a deck and a yard I can play in. Both have its ups and downs, I don't really say one is better than the other.

my parents live in the suburbs now, it's so quiet. no thumping bass of souped up cars or drunks in the street. maybe there's an occasional sound of a kid playing on a tricycle or something. i like the quietness

I moved from my parents' three-bedroom house one block away from the wide open prairie to a one-bedroom apartment in essentially the very middle of my hometown. I guess they both have their ups and downs, but this is a piece of shit town no matter where you live in it, that's the problem.

I enjoy letting my kids play outdoors in the yard. They can also play in our street (you know, riding their bikes, playing catch, and such) with out me having to worry (too much) about them being mowed down by insane motorists.
So yeah, I dig the 'burbs.

I hate the suburbs and love the city. My pet peeve is the people who moved to the suburbs to avoid "crime." They sometimes mean "people who aren't like me."
But I don't have kids. If you have kids, you have to make different choices. If you live in my city with kids, you either (1) send your kids to private school or (2) have a really slim chance of your kids attending a good school from K through 12. You will be part of a giant lottery every year. My friend lost the lottery big time for the next school year. Most of my friends with kids live in a suburb just so they can send their kids to what they think is a good school. I have serious doubts about how good those schools are. All suburbs are not the same.

It's cool that your kids play outside in your neighborhood. That was common when I was a kid in the suburbs. We ran loose and every house had an open door policy.
My friends who live in the suburbs with kids today get their kids home from daycare just in time to scarf down some dinner and put the kids to bed. They claim they never meet any neighbor kids because all the kids are in daycare or other activities all the time.

these tend to be the same people who classify Brooklyn Park or Brooklyn Center as "ghetto" when in reality theres small pockets of slightly bad areas but overall not much different than your typical burb. What they mean to say is "predominantly black" but bite their tounge.

No fucking way would I live in the city again, or the suburbs for that matter. Too many people and cars, too much concrete and noise, no sense of community, smog, and no space.
I love where I live in the bush. Koalas and possums aren't idiot ripoff merchants or dickheads in hotted-up corolla's.

i'd like the suburbs if it weren't for the people. THEY'RE ALL EXACTLY THE SAME. you meet one person from the suburbs, you've met like 90 percent of the population.

Yes, and then they move to all white suburbs with mega churches, hideous billboards, and meth problems. :p
You forgot about the rednecks/white trash.
EDIT: meth problems/churches... nm!

We pay like $400 for two floors here in the city. It's a cottage house so it's nice and quiet, very little noise from the street. I can get around the whole city on my bike (and couldn't care less about traffic). There's all kinds of community stuff to do. All kinds of sweet venues for music and cultural stuff. I've managed to effectively forget the suburbs exist.

i love living in the city. i like being able to walk to wherever i need to go, or be able to catch a bus somewhere easily.
maybe it's because i'm used to it now, but i need some of that traffic sounds to get to sleep. it creeps me out when its really quiet outside.

Ah, that was a freak happening. It was in the house looking for something eat before it went into hibernation. I'd rather that than a snake-oil salesman, to be sure.
I love the privacy and being able to see the stars at night. I can smoke a joint under a tree without the neighbours calling the cops and, speaking of which, I can grow some of my own and have no stress. The kids and the dog have plenty of space to run around and make as much noise as they want.
