I think thats about the best the beastie boys can hope selling with an all instrumental album. Maybe at this point in their career they dont care but I can't believe Capitol Records would greenlight a full length lp of just instrumentals especially because i highly doubt the radio will be playing any of these songs but oh well i guess.

Why don't you do some research before you complain about the new album. There are many threads already open with complaints.

why don't you just shut up, if the beastie feel like making a full instrumental album let them do it, they make music they like themselfs , and thats a good thing! i can't tell that from a lot of other artists who only make music the masses like!

There's too many threads about it, period. I'm stoked, even though I'm not believing ANYTHING posted here. I sure as hell believe in the boys being very good artists so I'm pretty sure I'll appreciate the album. What I like about them anyways is that they'll grow on you. They'll not go the way of the earworm, like Limp Bizkit, RATM, Offspring etc. I used to love that stuff when I first heard it and now it's just bleargh. Beastie Boys albums need to be listened to many times to appreciate the genius, which makes it all the sweeter.

I wouldn't go around bragging about that, I would have more respect for you if you were a kid considering the way you post.

Do you mean 50,000 in sales just in Brooklyn or including all of the
5 boroughs?

Stop the bashing. He brings up a good point. It's going to be hard to promote the album if it's full of instrumentals. The hardcore fanbase will most likely pick it up regardless. The fairweather fans will skip it. They probably won't win any new fans without radio/MTV play.
I applaud them for doing their thing anyway. It's hard in today's world of big heartless record companies. I'm surprised as well that Capitol would allow them to do such a thing. I guess they're at the point of their career where they're established and have more leeway.

Actually, I've run some preliminary numbers.
Not only are we going to New Hampshire, Tom Harkin, we're going to South Carolina and Oklahoma and Arizona and North Dakota and New Mexico, and we're going to California and Texas and New York … And we're going to South Dakota and Oregon and Washington and Michigan, and then we're going to Washington, D.C., to take back the White House! Byaaah!!!

Don't get us wrong, I'm pretty sure we all understood. Doesn't mean we arn't aloud to laugh off the idea. I'm pretty sure if they released an awesome hip hop album they still wouldn't win more fans thanks to MTV. An album that doesn't do well on MTV or doesn't get much radio play or is hard to promote doesn't mean it fails musically.

I never said people couldnt disagree. Everyone has their own opinion and thats what these boards are all about. The bboys can make a record of rubberbands being plucked if they want. I just cant believe that captiol records (being solely involved to make money) would give the go ahead to something that probably wouldnt be a commerical success.

in fact, these days, a commercial flop speaks louder musically than a record that burns out the reel on MTV. at least in my opinion.

Seeing as they're so rich, maybe they could dish out the new album for free with a couple of quid sellotaped on the inside cover. It'd be like a birthday card off your Nan.

This won't be the first all-instrumental albume they release. What about "The In Sound From Way Out?" Remember that one?

Perhaps they gave the go ahead because it's actually a good album and may well be a commercial success.

In Sound was a compilation of instrumentals from check your head and ill communication (bsides as well). Thats not an official record which means that this record will be a first. I remember Yauch saying in an interview (in the 90's) that they want to approach each record differently because theres no point in releasing the same record twice. They have done that....even with tt5b. They hadn't done an all drum machine record since 87, so to me tt5b was different. I was more surprised about the absence of instruments on that LP than I am about an all instrumental album. This is going to be sick.

Some of my thoughts for the board to disagree with about the new album (of course with not even hearing it). I think all fans should keep an open mind whenever their favorite band or artist wants to try something different. Will The Mix Up be a commercial success, or considered by the fans to be a great album? Its tough to say without even hearing a note yet. This album has the potential to be big if the lead off single had an innovative video that gets airtime on mtv and the altervative music video stations. Most of todays pop songs include, what I call, nursery rhyme hooks. Chorus's that get into your head and are easily remembered by the lowest common denominator. If they decide to use a sample as a hook (I know this isn't the definition of an instrumental album but still passable) the album could have great sales. Think Intergalactic without versus ( the original version was on their website after Ill Communication).
Capitol Record made them release the Sold Gold Hits album to fufill contract requirements. Doing that may have given them more artistic freedom in the next albums.
Anyways wait for the single. TT5B would have sold double if Letter to NYC had been the first single. Just my thoughts at the time man.
