i would have bet my life the record would have vocals...beasties might have ended their career with another all rap album. rap fans are different from rock fans. rock fans still like the stones and they still sell out stadiums. rap fans though, were starting to sort of turn on the beasties. this new album sort of elevates them above the fray of their rap contemporaries, even if the record sucks...it takes huge gonads to put out an instrumental record, especially because none of the beasties are genius musicians or virtuosos on their instruments. this record sets the beasties up for more albums. people are gonna want more instrumens, with vocals in the future from the beasties and they will once again appreciate the beasties on the mic. might not be a genius record..that is yet to be seen. but its a genius move to release this kind of a record because it just elevates them in terms of originality, and separates them from idiots like eminem and most of the other rap idiots who top the charts in rap. yo

I agree! Even on the pageant tour (packed with rap songs) they finished with rock like songs Gratitude and Sabotage.

So they either have alot of confidence in their musical skills or they know the crowd will love them...(or both)

despite what they may lack as instrumentalists and players, their strength comes from when they're playing as one. nothing's sadder than a bitchin' guitarist or drummer or what have you that's got the chops, but doesn't play with or play well with other musicians. i personally prefer less technical players, for they rely more on feel and their ears. they incorporate other creative avenues to round out their tunes that most methodic players do not pay attention to or compensate for.

I don't know much about being a skilled instrumental musician but isn't it when you can make music that lots of people like by using your instruments?? If that's the case Beastie Boys are some of the most skilled. They are bigger than many people think.

Sometimes I think that even some people on this board don't realize how good they are.

They are one of, if not the, best band(s) of the last few decades.

They rock...that's why you're reading this:)

I beg to differ. This is a band whose work has inspired and is admired by many musicians. You don't get to be in a position of high admiration without having musical skills.

I think it's sad and unfair that their musical talents are dissed by some fans. I think they are skilled musicians. Recognize!

I think what he was trying to say by "virtuosos" was you're not going to put any of the guys up with the best of all time on their respective instruments.
No one will ever say "Ad-Rock is the best guitar player of all time! Yauch is the best bassist ever! Mike D is up with the top drummers!"

But I agree with you. They may not be the "best" with their instruments, but they are extremely creative and savy in my opinion. They make great music together. This is undisputed.

Nice post beastmasterflex!

You've hit on a great point. The secret to the Beasties' longevity and success is not only do they take their time in between releases, but they switch it up every time.

Exactly. I've been playing guitar for like 3 weeks and Beastie Boys stuff is some of the easiest to play (Time For Livin, that "chorus" riff in In 3's, Remote Control) but that doesn't change the fact that they make amazing music together. An instrumental album is actually a great idea. Even when they rap it's not so much about their skills as MC's but more how they compliment each other and the track. It's very rare that they outshine the music they're putting vocals over and the music is better for that.

Ok. The Ramones were an amazing band... BUT they based their style off of three chords. They weren't the greatest musicians, but they were able to use what they knew to make groundbreaking music... music that is attracting new fans to this day! This is how I see the Beasties. I've been listening to them since '86. In an interview, Horovitz said that the bands that inspired him to play music was shit like Ramones and Anti-Pasti because it was shit he could actually play. DON'T GET ME WRONG!! I've always loved their instrumentation. But they are not on the same level as Hendrix or whatever... that's why they are my favorite band... they can take simplicity and turn it into something fucking outstanding... They have been the soundtrack to my life FOR TWENTY FREAKING YEARS. Shhhhh.... Umm.. word?
