she was 12. she had a wicked awesome life. so that makes me not so sad. towards the end she was having trouble walking and i think she may have had diabetes. we had been putting it off for ages, but she was in a lot of pain. i wasn't there. my mother took her to the vet. apparently the vet was really good, he was very kind and gentle and she just went to sleep peacefully
:(
it's for the best though, it kind of sounds like what happened with my dog (only it was mouth cancer, not diabetes). you put it off, but it gets worse and worse, and finally, you realize what has to be done, and you do it, and it fucking sucks for a while, but then it's alright.
hang in there, baby

That's the right thing to do. It's a difficult part about being an owner, but you have to make that decision when it's time.
I stayed with my last dog when the vet gave her a shot. She just went to sleep without even flinching. It's a good way to go.

thanks bob. i know we were doing the right thing. my mum was talking to a friend of hers who had a sick dog, but they didn't put it down, and they felt terrible and still regret it. my mother was there with her. i wish i could have been there, but my life is completely falling apart in every way so i couldn't.

i wasn't actually there when my dog got put down, my mom did it (god bless her, i was in the middle of studying for finals, but honestly i'm not sure if i'd have wanted to see it even if i could, as selfish as that sounds), but apparently it was pretty sad, because my dog (a black lab) loved meeting new people, so when he got to the vet, he was kind of running around all excited, sort of jogging around the table...he had no idea.
i don't think i could have taken that.
i should stop posting in this thread for now
(edit: the actual shot itself was pleasant, he just went to sleep, it's just the lead-up that was tragically funny)

I know that many people would not want to be there, and they should not be there. I'm the kind of person who needs to see things for myself. I want everyone to know that it's a very very humane process. Vets are usually very kind people.
My springer spaniel was a big dork on the way to the vet's office too. She used to love going to the vet's office because my mom used to give her a treat afterwards. She was the best dog I ever knew. RIP Suzy.

ain't that the truth
you love 'em like hell, but they always die well before you do. in the end, it's absolutely worth it, but it does fucking suck to watch them die.

The best part about dogs is that they're always happy to see you.
Suzy would meet me at the door and be wagging her whole backside all over. If I'd been gone for a week or so, she would pee with excitement, so I'd try and greet her in the backyard.
She loved to get in the trash -- especially kleenex in the bathroom trash. She would rip the kleenex and leave the shreds all around the house. So once in a while, she would greet me at the door and be all excited and happy to see me, and then you could see in her eyes that it occurred to her that she had been in the trash, and so she would slink away and look embarrassed while still wagging her tail the whole way.

RIP. Sounds like she was loved, and being put to sleep is the most peaceful way to go. I couldn't be with my kitty when they put her to sleep, but I told them to be gentle and tell her that I loved her very much. She was only with the vets when it happened, which I kind of regret, but I also just...couldn't witness that. I would have completely fallen apart. So good choice on staying away from that, it's for the best.

i remember when i was a kid, i read some story in a magazine, about a kid who had a dog, but the dog was getting old, and he was worried about him, he wanted to stay home from school to look after him, but his mom wouldn't let him because he had a test. so he went to school to take the test, and he came back, and the dog was there at the front door to greet him, only he was all exhausted and out of breath, because his mom had to help him up the stairs or...something...anyway at the end they had to put the dog to sleep, and i was really sad about the whole thing, until at the end i noticed the disclaimer "this is a work of fiction" or some similar statement.
who writes that kind of fiction? what kind of sick fuck writes fictional stories about dogs slowly dying, much less publishes them in children's magazines? that always stuck with me...that and that horrible part from that book, "z for zachariah"...i dunno if anyone else read that book in school, but if you did, i bet you know what i'm talking about

sorry to hear that. My dog of 13 past away a few years back. It still upsets me to go to my parents and see where his bed used to be.
I don't think some people understand how attached you can get to a dog sometimes :(

So sorry, Zorra. I was there when the vet put my dogs to sleep. They were very old, mother and daughter. They went together and I think that was best. I cried for days, they were like 16 and 15 or something. I loved those dogs with all my heart, they would have done anything for us.
Being in the room is very hard, but I wanted to be there with them. One second they were there, awake, looking around. Then they both just collapsed. We held them for a few minutes until we were sure they were gone and then took them home and buried them in the back yard. Thinking about it still makes me cry.
I wish I knew what to say to make things a bit better. but i don't. sorry.

thats one of the things i dont like about pets. when you get a dog you know that eventually you're going to see it die and that blows. they're so clueless, happy and dumb. the only thing you CAN do is be happy for what was i guess and be glad its on your terms and not an accident. that sucks, zorra. are you getting another dog?

i would like my parents to get another dog (i can't keep one in this house) but they said they couldn't after blotty. i'm hoping their mind will change. i think it will help them live longer, healthier lives.

my parents said the same thing when the last one died. now there are two dogs in the house. in time, it wont be unlikely that they change their minds.
In heaven, dogs run free in endless fields, nap on fluffy clouds, are given treats by passing angels and all the fleas are in Hell.
