to go to the hospital when they think that

a) your appendix is about to burst
or
b) you have a cyst on your ovary

and so they do a catscan to be sure. Turns out it's option B, severe enough to cause a lot of pain but not severe enough for surgery due to a late period. Oh, and no meds or no overnight stay or anything.

And all that without insurance?

TAKE A GUESS.

Give up?

$11,000

:D

:D:D:D

fucking fuckin fuck.

That's terrible. :( You should move up to Canadiana where it wouldn't have cost you anything. You just have to wait for two years!

well, I'm battling out with my insurance because supposedly there was a problem with my payment and they dropped me. However, I received NO notification of a problem with my auto-payments and they were going through just fine before so I'm trying to figure out wtf went wrong.

Furthermore, I had correspondence with the insurance company while at the hospital on a day AFTER the supposed day of dropped coverage. Why they didn't say anything on that phone call I'm not sure but then the girl at the hospital who talked to them didn't make any written indication of that correspondence so my biggest piece of ammo is gone :(

I have to go to the business department of the hospital next week and hopefully figure something out.

And what sucks is that I had to reapply to the same damned insurance because every other one was too expensive/had too high of a deductible. I haven't been approved yet so let's hope I don't injure myself anytime soon.

p.s. someone in canada marry me just so I can more there, ok? thanks.

actually, a friend of mine mentioned that a lot of military look for wives just to receive the benefits without actually being an official couple.

sure, that's kind of shitty, but I can use the benefits damn it. It's something to ponder.

nah. The one I had I had to get myself. Temp agency offers none. This place wants to place me once the maternity leave is over but that's not till July and after that I think it's a 90 day waiting period.

a few years ago, i was out of a job and went to the emergency room twice. i was an asshole and purposely filled in the wrong information, wrong name, ss#, address, phone number. i never got a bill and i havent seen them on my credit reports. i saved myself a good $5000. not that i'd do that again or recommend it to anyone

Check with the hospital's financial aid office. Seriously. A lot of money is available through hospitals for people who really need treatment and truly can't afford it. Don't just assume you'll have to assume the whole debt. Talk to them.

Bob
05-03-2007, 12:11 PM
i kind of have to wonder where those high expenses come from. does it cost the hospital anything remotely in the ballpark of $11,000 to do a catscan? do they tell you how much things are going to cost before they do them? or do you just kind of have to wait until the end to see? it'd be like if you went to a restaurant, and there weren't any prices on the menu

oh yeah, I'll definitely be talking to them to see if I can get help. AND I plan on asking them to break down the bill in to what each service costs because I really am curious to see what the hell is so god damned expensive cnosidering that I didn't have surgery or stay over night.

Hopefully my boss will let me take a day off to do it since the business office hours are the same hours I work...but my boss already came to me asking me if I'll have to take any more days off a few weeks ago and I said no (it was while I was here at this new job that I got sick). So I had a warning.

As far as the fake name and all, I believe I had to show them my ID. I think anyway. I cannot recall now. Bleh.

time to be a pole dancer!

edit: yeah when I looked over all the bills, not only this ER bill but inculding everything else, I am up to $15,491.03 in debt due to hospital related shit. And now Sallie Mae wants me to start paying back the $3,500 I borrowed for school, too, at the end of the month. I have my associates but I'd like my BA.

Thing is, I wouldn't really care. But because the past bills affected my credit, that means I cannot get a loan for school. I CAN get financial aid but it's not nearly enough to return to school full-time. I can do part-time school but the way the classes are set up, I wouldn't be able to work as much and I wouldn't be able to support myself (looks like I need to move somewhere with $300 rent please). And I have no co-signers.

I'll figure something out but none of my options are ones I like. Such is life.

beastieangel01
05-03-2007, 01:33 PM
yeah, I'd love a job with insurance but there's always that pesky 90 day probation period and I always seem to get something during that period. It's really obnoxious.

And right now with the application I sent in to the insurance, they are going over my records so there's potential for them to deny me.

I don't even really have a condition, that I'm aware of. I just have a lot of random shit that pops up at the worst time possible. And none of the issues are SERIOUS (just potential to get serious if not treated), it's just that without insurance, it's expensive.

I looked in to moving to Canada, actually. Time to save up to leave. Can't find me in another country to pay the bills, bitches! Okay maybe they can but, at least I'd have health coverage.

abcdefz
05-03-2007, 01:36 PM
they can deny her?

Yeah, or deny at least that procedure. Which, to be fair, is fair; it wouldn't be right for someone just diagnosed with cancer to suddenly get insurance, pay a premium, and then start submitting "OH! I've just gotten cancer!" bills.

That's the problem. Its actually very hard for poor people to get medical care in this country. Medical costs and insurance are getting completely out of control and cumbersome. Something will have to give eventually.

They die. USA! USA! USA!

But seriously, the poor keep getting poorer and in George Bush's America, we have more important things to worry about than socialized health care. The extreme righties in this country believe that the poor can just go get a job with health insurance, or stop their bitching. They don't see that they were priviledged and had their parents pay for college for them, thus them being able to get those types of jobs, when in fact a lot of people are booted to the curb once they turn 18, have no financial assistance for college, so they have to work a blue-collar job with no insurance and possibly save enough to go back to school so they can eventually get a better job and therefore health benefits, but if they get sick within that time period, they're just fucked.

It makes me sick to think where our priorities are nowadays.

Yeah, I know that my bike accident I had when I was 13 would have cost close to $50,000 without insurance - I was injected with valium, treated by the volunteer fire department and then medivacced to the mainland by helicopter, spent some time in the ER, got an MRI, spent the night at the hospital.

Luckily, my dad was a government employee and had great health insurance. We paid a couple hundred bucks and were on our way.

If I didn't have that, I would probably STILL be paying off that debt.

pre-existing condition riders are insane to the point that its almost pointless to get insurance.

A friend of a friend took wellbutrin to quit smoking, and his new insurance company said they noticed he was perscribed it and since its typically given as an anti-depressant, if he ever needs mental health care he will be denied coverage since it would be "pre-existing".

I cant imagine how anyone with cancer or HIV can manage to stay alive.

Thing is, with the baby boom generation aging and living longer than previous generations, health care will continue to get worse in the US until the "old money" bullish stubborn CEO fucks all die. Its not working anymore....and Im kinda considering cashing in my 401k and taking a loss since our economy will probably bottom out before I am 65-70 LOL

Also, FUCK. Your life is starting to sound like mine, C. I'm waiting for my next summer disaster to strike. Maybe I'll get polio and we can both bitch about it on the mb!
