It's wider than the old site...but it's twenty oh seven, yo. You can't roll with the 800x600 screen resolution any more, it's time for 1024x768 minimum.

1024x768 on this thing would require a crankshaft and kerosene. Anyways, good job yo.

Edit: that's what I'm on. I just checked it.

Nice job...But, is just me or is something not loading properly just below the knobs? All I have is black text with one knob that says news?

And I'm running 1024 x 768 so I don't believe that's the problem.

Actually it's a teensy bit narrow on 1680x1050, but I'll cope ;)

It's too narrow on a widescreen monitor.

I don't mind scrolling for a website, but when it comes to reading each post, I can't be bothered to scroll all the time.

Mr. Boomin'Granny
05-19-2007, 04:01 PM
Ok since I am a web-developer, let me chime in on a couple of things.

The page load is too long for what content there is on the page. I noticed that there are tons of scripts on the page that run on every page load. Is this really necessary? I do not see any lightbox functionality on the site. If there is then you should just limit that js file to that particular page.

I would also move each js function being called on the page to its own js file and call it in the script tag. Also the same for the on page css that is being used.

It takes 10-15 sec on a 3mb cable connection to view a page. That is not acceptable.

And I dont really like the color scheme, but that's me. That was probably decided by higher-ups and you guys have no control over it. The pastel colors really don't go together at all.

Thanks.

minton
05-20-2007, 03:07 PM
The load time doesn't have anything to do with the JS or CSS...it's entirely to do with the DB server. We're aware of it and doing what we can to fix.

It's much faster today that it was yesterday. (y)

I have a wide screen on my laptop, but I would appreciate it if you would fix the scrolling thing at some point. I like to do two things at once and reduce the size of the window the internet is in. I don't know how the message board magic works, but I know that it's fixable. I know that the new album-related news is more important though. :)

And that figured as soon as the main page came up that it was a mistake to date the band's entries. There will be obvious evidence on the main page of the band's level of interest in the site. Here's hoping that the band gets bored on their European tour and decides to add a new entry at some point. :D

it's still goin down sooner or later. to give you a hint on why nothing has happened i'd say first of all it's been very busy for all of us, second of all it's not just changing a width variable for the board but also rearranging the whole flash header to go with the same width as you'd still be stuck with scrollin if the header had the same width..

though we're gonna work around this soon enough.

Maybe it's an IE thing then. But I don't use it.

And I do understand your problem, because I have the same one.

I use Firefox and I still have that same problem.
And pressing ctrl and mouseroller just makes the text smaller, but not the screen...

I use safari and firefox and I have the same problem. I have a wide screen on my laptop,
so if I blow up the window to fill the whole screen I lose the scroll bar, but I don't have to
do that with ANY OTHER WEBSITE and I don't want to have to read posts that cross the entire
screen of my laptop. We're not meant to read text that is more than 7 inches across.

It's time to take the header down. Despite the denials and my complete lack of knowledge
about website design it's clearly the problem and it's hideously ugly to boot! Ever since Sarky
mentioned the two blues being different blues that clash with each other I concentrate on it.

(I'm putting my post in correctly sized lines. So there!)

It's only been 7 months. The Beastie Boys aren't known for their speed of releasing new
material, so maybe the site works in a similar way. Which it shouldn't.

Try as I might, I really don't see (http://beastiemixes.com/images2/othersites/beastieboysdotcomlarge.jpg) the problem...

Seriously, Static sites should be sized for the majority of your visitors... Graphics and gaming related sites tend to have visitors with higher screen resolutions. The trend is that "Most" people are moving away from their 800x600 screen sizes to something higher, 1024x768 being the norm now.

Sites can be made to size up or down to fit different screen resolutions, but it's harder to design a site to do that. An example, http://mashtapes.com/mashes.shtml this page should look just as good at a small screen size as it does on a larger screen because it's made to scale down. beastiemixes was designed to be a static sized site so I shot for the minimum, and made all the pages 750 wide, so even people 800 wide screens can see the whole page.

These are the stats for the last month's worth of visitors to Beastiemixes, and their screen sizes. Now if you were looking at the stats for say knittingworld the 800x600 size might be more popular.

1. 1024x768.........44.18%
2. 1280x1024.......14.28%
3. 1280x800.........11.07%
4. 1680x1050........9.25%
5. 800x600...........5.25%
6. 1440x900..........5.09%
7. 1152x864..........3.24%
8. 960x600............1.26%
9. 1920x1200.........1.23%
10. 1280x768.........1.10%

I would be willing to bet that the next incarnation of the site will be a little more friendly to those of you with small screen sizes. Your voice has been loud and your cause has been just.

are you perhaps blind? i've posted several screen shots illustrating my problem,
and since i am using 1024x768 (aka THE MAJORITY) then clearly it is a problem.

Don't jump my shit, I started off with a joke and then tried to help. I saw your photos the first time you posted them. I told YOU that you were the majority. Did you know that before I posted the stats??

Did I once say that it wasn't a problem for you? Clearly I was joking that it wasn't a problem for ME.

I finished off with a little re-assurance that I thought you would get your wishes when the next version of the site launched.

I would be willing to bet that the next incarnation of the site will be a little more friendly to those of you with small screen sizes. Your voice has been loud and your cause has been just.

Now was that so bad?

Designing sites that work perfectly for everyone isn't easy. And re-designing one mid journey (Before the new design is ready) is a pain. For all we know Minton is busy as hell working on the 'NEW' design already and doesn't have time to fix the old one. We really don't know what goes on, on the other side of the screen do we? As much as we'd all like to think that we're in control of this place, we're not.

What you don't know: I spent about an hour of MY time last night looking for a plugin for Firefox that would help YOU view the site a little smaller without sacrificing text size, the only thing I could turn up was a plugin that would allow you to re-size text entry fields in forms, like the one I'm typing into right now. You can see it here (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3694)

Can we be friends now? ;)

jokes are supposed to be funny. did you know 90% of people only read one
line of a post before they move on? and the beginning of your post belittled
our situation.

and yes i was familiar with the stats, but i think it was you that posted them
the first time anyway? but yeah, CHEERS. if only someone was listening.

i'm the end user. the site should be designed for me, and people like me.
they should have designed a site that worked for the MAJORITY of people.
do i care if it's difficult? no. designing sites is not my job, it's their job.
plenty of people i know DO design websites, and all of them have forums with
fluid width. every single one of them said that this is easy to do. they could
have made a separate forum page without the header, since it is the header
that is causing the problem. but they didn't. WHY? because it is hard?
well BOO FUCKING HOO, that's your job, do it.

we should be in control of this place. if there were no users, there'd be
no messageboard.

i appreciate that dude.

i only wish that the people who could have actually fixed this problem, the
ones responsible for making the site user-friendly, had perhaps TESTED IT
and CHECKED if it was going to be a problem before it was launched.

fire them all.

ps. i'll try that at home on a laptop
i'm lucky enough to be borrowing a larger screen for now.
