ok..I was one of the vocal "wish this wasn't an instrumental album..yakka yakka" bitching before the clips came out, but having heard both songs and especially "Off the grid" i can't wait to hear this. Still wish it had rhymes. In fact, if i start to ponder on what "Off the grid" would sound like with rhymes I might spiral into a low-level depression. So i wont.

What a very great song! Well done, etc. etc.

The bassline on Rat Cage is prety much straight out of that Rat Cage Records punk era. LOL @ VB in the video. And Telstra. VB>>>Telstra, obviously.

Here's what some people think of The Rat Cage :). Not the greatest response so far.

Well, they are doing a hip hop version of this album? Or was that bogus?

I still am trying to make myself excited about this new album, as I'm still bitter about the whole intrumental thing. But Off The Grid is helping...very good track.

Some very self-important folk on there. I'm all for people not being into the Beastie Boys. At this point, I'm just glad I am. I have Off the Grid in my car (ripped it with my media shit, no D/L) and for the first time in ages I felt bad looking around at all the people who weren't hearing it with me.

Off the Grid kinda reminds me of a gratitude-esque type jam, aside from the opening noodling. very cool.(y)

Bass-wise it reminds me of a cross between Something's Got to Give (big and fucked up) and then obviously Gratitude/Futtermans. The pedals man, the pedals. The guitar sounds out of this world.

Even the non-effect "noodling" Get Smart stuff got people's ears pricked up. It's such a juxtaposed sound over that kind of jam-feel. It bridges the 60's and whenever, for sure.

I've flossed the song to a number of people. One person couldn't believe that Mike plays a student kit.

i have to be quite honest, i don't quite see exactly where adrock is going with that guitar playing at the beginning. i know he's somewhat of a minimalist, but i just haven't come to "get" that part yet. as of now it's kinda sloppy and amateur sounding, though i will most likely be singing a different tune come more listening time with the track.

I liked this one but I find the sound that keeps repeating at the beginning quite annoying.

Gotta say I'm insanely into it- its just what the doctor ordered- It makes the journey to the sick breakdown at around 2min that much more intense. This is unlike other beastie stuff to my ear, except that it fuckin rules, so I guess that does make it a little derivative of their older stuff.
I'm verry excited to be talking about new songs/site again on the boards. Didn't realize the level of my beastie addiction till the boards got taken away from me for 2 damm weeks. whew, glad to get that out of my system...

Me too! :)

Anyone else notice that before the song kicks in Ad Rock 'borrows' the riff from Pearl Jam's "Tremor Christ" - check it out if you think it aint so! It's not identical, but it certainly reminds me of that tune.

Same here, mos def!! I thought that it was going to suck but now I've heard off the grid and im totally psyched for this record!! I am so in love with that video and song, it's unbelievable!! I get this weird feeling when I close my eyes and just jam. it makes you feel like your high. If you put your hand up to the speaker and feel the vibrations of every cord through your arms and body - it's almost spiritual. I think I love that song a bit TOO much...

Yeah, Off The Grid fucking rules. Best Beastie Boys instrumental I've ever heard, by far. I'm not a huge fan of the "Rat Cage" track, though.

But yeah, Off The Grid....So, so ill. The only thing I'm afraid of, though, is the fact that before TT5B came out, we got clips of "Ch Check It Out" "Triple Trouble" Rhyme The Rhyme Well" and "Open Letter To NYC", which were far and away the best songs on that album. I just hope that the rest of The Mix Up is as quality as Off The Grid.

So yeah...we'll see what happens. But if that track is any indication the record will be off the hook.

#2, 14th st break, #5, the electric worm and #11, the cousin of death clips all sound fucking awesome

I seriously listen to "off the grid" about 7 times a day, the video is awesome, the new site is sweet, BEASTIE BEASTIE BOYS!!!

I love how off the grid has basically turned this side of the board into New York after 9/11. Before that happened everyone was in an uproar! it was mayhem! We were at eachothers throats! and now Off the grid has happened and were like men who have seen titties... were calmed and quieted... So relaxed and worry free. I love it. (y)

dont from, homes. yauch/beastie basslines are the best to start out on because they're relatively easy, majorly tasteful, and simply a blast to rock out on, man.

they truly exemplify the importance of a wicked bassline over mindless improvisation any day. not that improv is lame, but an acutely polished bass riff you can play all day and maintain a wicked chubby.

errrrr......was that creepy?

........fuck it.

Just got my promo copy of the album through and it sounds great. Yeah, it's not what I wanted in terms of the vocal content - but get beyond that and take it for what it is and you'll find a cohesive record which is greater than the sum of its parts. Sweet.

Off the Grid sounds like a rock-dubbed out version of the Arctic Monkeys 'From the Rits to the Rubble'. Honestly!

Top tune though, and you're a lucky geezer Parkey. I used to get stuff like that, not through labels or anything, but my local dodgy independent dealer - who'd get all sorts of album promos months before album releases - who has not been seen for awhile...

I'll have admit I was only partial to this song when I first heard it and saw the video...after seeing it live twice this summer and watching Adrock going off on his guitar in the middle of the song I now consider this one of my favorites on the The Mix-Up. In fact I played this last night at the end of my DJ set at this bar/restaurant...saw the bartender doing some air guitar to it. :D
