View Full Version : How do I answer my wife?

My wife used to love the Beasties... But, she has a real problem with them not allowing Prodigy to play Smack my Bitch Up in concert because it promotes violence against women, yet they use MixMaster Mike as their DJ - even though MMM worked with known batterer Tommy Lee.

She says that makes them hypocrites. I see her point, does anyone have a way to argue against her?

Thanks...

My wife doesn't mind Smack My Bitch Up, and doesn't really get into the Beastie Boys. At least not the way I do. She likes Off the Grid, though.

You make a statement, when you have to make a statement. Consequences be damned.

I'd say the MMM thing is two degrees of separation. How far should they take it? Inspect every promoter's, custodian's, and fan's private history?

I guess there's also a difference between presenting a bad message again and again for entertainment value and working with someone who has worked with someone who has a regrettable private -- and, hopefully, very past -- history.

The fact that the issue was never taken up publicly with Kool Keith shows me it was a very time and place sort of deal.

Yeah I think I need to weigh in here. I read this a few hours ago and moved on but I just realized it was bugging me so I gotta vent:

First off your wife is wrong. (I know saying that will probably get you into some trouble- so don'y say it like that, but your married, my guess is you know how to do this stuff, but I digress...)

Ok first of all its comparing apples and oranges here. It seems to me that the much more eggregious offense is putting violence and hatred out into the world under the guise of art (and shit I like prodigy, I even like that song- but you wont catch me denying its misogyny in a million years). That seems much more offensive to me than working with someone who in the past worked with someone who made a mistake. And don't get me wrong, this does not excuse Tommy Lee of his actions, but as far as I remember this was a lone event, that he was punished for, and I'm pretty sure both apologized and sought help for.

I think the most offensive part to me is your wife calling the Beastie Boys hypocrites for working with good ol mixy (who as far as I know has nothing like this in his past that I've ever heard of).

This offends me I think because I think the act of forgiveness and allowing for peoples personal growth is a wonderful thing and should be WAY more valued in society than it is. I consider the Beastie Boys (among many others) as some of my primary teachers of the philosophy of accepting the growth of others.

I have been an enormous fan since "Girls" and all the other LTI misogny through now. I appreciated the growth of the boys both personaly and musicaly because it has in some ways mirrored my own growth. How they decide who to work with is not only their own business, but I trust them to be good judges of people. I've no doubt that everyone in the Boys camp is good people, and I would be shocked to find out if they had disassociated themselves from someone in their inner circle because they had made a mistake. Seems to me thats when you need your friends most.

Thats my hope at least- but nobodies perfect so i would probably forgive them if they did (not that I would probably ever be in a position to find out- their personal life is their business). Which I guess ultimately leads to my final point, if your wife enjoys the music they make, wouldn't it make more sense to keep that in your life, than to turn your back on it because of some tangental affiliation with percieved violence against women. I mean its a pretty crappy way to try and end violence in society by refusing to listen to a band that actively advocates for the use of non violence means to resolve conflict.

Didnt mean to get all wordy and doctor Phil on the heads here, but evidently I felt I had something to say.

SHEEEEEET! The only thing Mix Master Mike has ever abused, to my knowledge, is vinyl. And he abuses it so well. Don't you think?

Tell her the batterer in the smack my bitch up video is a female, it actually is. And i doubt she has that big of a problem when 2 dudes fight so she is actually the hypocrite.

Explain to her that business is business. I'm sure none of the people you mentioned including MMM enjoy the battery of women, but MMM made a business decision to work with Tommy Lee as many, many others have done.
