Hey, didn't we have this topic just before the boards went offline?
What about the Big Lebowski?
Rock On
05-19-2007, 11:54 AM
See, I wouldn't really call Lebowski a drugie movie, it is a stoner movie though. That is, it's a great movie to watch while high, but the story itself doesn't really focus on drinking or doing drugs.
My suggestion is to just vote "other"

He lifted that almost entirely from a documentary he made about Stephen (Steven?) Prince, circa 1977. Prince described having administered the shot in detail, right down to the magic marker, etc. Tarrantino just added the flipping out rag doll spasms when she came to.
You know what other drug related movie gave me the creeps...........

oh yeah,"Kids" was brutal creepy....."Shortbus" and the traffic stop in "Bad Lieutenant" invoked the same response for me......for some reason Sean Penn using heroin in "Falcon and the Snow Man" was desperate and wicked realistic.....that was the first time I saw heroin really look like heroin in a film outside of the "French Connection"....the evil brown down......(n)
Give me some info on Shortbus. I almost rented it the other day. It deals more with the sex lives of NYers than drugs....right?
MC Moot
05-29-2007, 08:22 AM
Shortbus is debauchery,homosexuality,orgy's,dope....the actors fuck for real on reel....it's pornography dressed up in the prenentious art house schtick.....shocking opening sequence had folks spliting the theater when it debuted here.....plus a childhood VJ from our national music station was in it so that was bizarre for me......(n)

I move to strike Pink Floyd's "the wall" from the record. there is actually very little drug use dipicted in the movie and it's actually not at all about drugs or tripping. It's more of a political statement than anything else. the fact that people like to get high when the watch it doesn't really make it a drug movie in my book.

"The Wall" was about Syd Barrett's descent into insanity, which included heavy drug use.
You make a valid point about the film though, but watching The Wall while high or tripping is something everyone should do once in their lifetime and anyone who has knows it's one of the great drug movies of all times.
It belongs on the list.

Yeah, sure it's more of a mob movie but Goodfellas towards the end was pretty much all about the drugs.
Caveman with Ringo Starr was so stupid but funny, especially when they fed that dino a bush of pot and it went all crazy eyed.
Natural Born Killers!!!! Still one of my favs. What in the world is better than trippin on peyote and going out killing? (For movie purposes only)
American Beauty. I can't believe I just saw that a month ago.
Herald and Kumar, King of New York, Apocalypse Now, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Repo Man, Friday. There's a few more out there that I can't think of worth the mention.

Hopper was out of his mind on coke and I beleive LSD.
My mom and dad were on a flight with Mr. Sheen from NY to SF. my mom was sitting right next to him and Martin talked to her the whole flight. it was right around the time that he was doing the final voice overs for Apocalypse. He said making the movie was a total nightmare. every thing that could go wrong did and people were all drugged out. I beleive he let slip to my mom that Hopper was on a mix of coke and LSD.

well...I don't know about that. could be. but My mom & Dad wouldn't have made the whole thing up really because when she first told me about this when I was a teenager I didn't even really know who martin sheen was. just that he was some big actor guy. So perhaps he wasn't doing voice overs...or maybe he was doing it for a different movie and that's why he was flying. but at the time Apocalypse wasn't finished yet and I'm pretty sure they had some sort of disscussion about him having to go back to do some work on it..which he wasn't happy about because he wanted it to be over with.

Yeah that's how it appears to me,great scene...."you gonna close that door?....what are the charges?".....(y)
It took Francis Ford Coppola nearly three years to edit the footage from Apocalypse Now. While working on his final edit, it became apparent to him that Martin Sheen would be needed to tape a number of additional narrative voice-overs. Coppola soon discovered that Sheen was busy and unable to perform these voice-overs. He then called in Sheen's brother Joe Estevez, whose voice sounds nearly identical to Sheen's, to perform the new narrative tracks. Estevez was also used as a stand-in/double for Sheen when Sheen suffered a heart-attack during the shoot in 1976. Estevez was not credited for his work as a stand-in or for his voice-over work.
So it seems like Sheen did the most of it.

I was knee-jerking at the "Sheen did the voice-over" thing, not impuning your parents'. I kind of read it as a going-back-to-do-pickups story, actually. But --

I stand corrected. I swear that in Hearts of Darkness they made a big deal out of the fact that someone else did the narration (entirely).

Martin's brother thing sounds right, anyway. But, yeah -- have a look. It might just be the way I remember it, but I thought the whole narration was cobbled together when Sheen was unavailable. Sounds like I'm wrong, though -- IMDB is decent about vetting stuff.

They didn't mention it at all in Hearts of Darkness. And also Bottoms said he was on speed during the bridge scene.
Great documentary.
