Fuck, yeah. Looks like they might've rebounded.
This one just premiered at Cannes.
From Variety (http://www.variety.com/index.asp?layout=cannes2007&jump=review&reviewid=VE1117933677):
A scorching blast of tense genre filmmaking shot through with rich veins of melancholy, down-home philosophy and dark, dark humor, "No Country for Old Men" reps a superior match of source material and filmmaking talent. Cormac McCarthy's bracing and brilliant novel is gold for the Coen brothers, who have handled it respectfully but not slavishly, using its built-in cinematic values while cutting for brevity and infusing it with their own touch. Result is one of the their very best films, a bloody classic of its type destined for acclaim and potentially robust B.O. returns upon release later in the year.
Oh please oh please oh please
*fingers crossed*

The Ladykillers, particularly.
Anyway -- here's a squeezed copy of the trailer (http://weblogs.variety.com/thompsononhollywood/2007/06/first_look_no_c.html) for the new movie.

I'll take Ladykillers over Intolerable anyday.....;)
The good Brothers are the only American director's that will put my ass in a theatre seat, regardless of the product, other than Marty Scorsese...can't wait!

Sounds good - I think there are 2 Coen Bro movies in my top 10. Did anyone see The Man Who Wasn't There, any good? I never got around to watching that one.

Just in case:
MUCH MUCH MUCH better quality trailer (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/no_country_for_old_men/trailers.php) at Rotten tomatoes and IGN.

It's okay. Pretty overrated. Beautifully done, beautiful performances.

Yeah -- I hope it's organic and not some sort of retreat. Except for Woody H., it looks dandy. (y)

I like Woody just fine....although it may have more to do with his politics than acting....but the fact that I don't see him a sit-com character in everything he does is a major tribute to his ability's.....(y)

It took a second watch for me to appreciate it properly....the scene where Billy Bob wrecks his car is stunning..."looks" surreal and suspended....it sticks out in my mind everytime I think about it....great B and W cinematography.....(y)

That, and when Shaloub (sp?) enters the holding cell to talk that first time.
I'd really like to see the color version. Not because I think it would look better, but because usually (from what I understand) color choices are made on the set for black and white shooting which don't always coordinate properly as "color." It'd be nice to see how they solved all that.

Intolerable Cruelty is one of their more underrated films.
Raising Arizona and Big Lebowski are in my top 5 comedies of all time...
Fargo, Milers Crossing, and Blood Simple are up there as far as drama goes..
and theres Hudsucker Proxy and O Brother Where Art Thou...
Man WHo Wasnt There is decent, and I never saw Ladykillers

Ladykillers is their only flat-out bomb, I think. The last moment is fantastic, but there's about 120 minutes of real shit to get there.
Hanks is unhinged, though. An honestly eccentric performance I really liked.

Definitely the only thing I liked about The Ladykillers. But he still did that stuttering thing he does that so takes me out of the moment. You know, that really wierd inflection thing he does? The only place it worked was in Forrest Gump. Did he do that in The Terminal too? With the bad accent? *shudder*

"The General" was the redemmer for me in the Ladykillers and as metioned up there^ it's a superior film to "Intolerable" which a shallowly masked lament about the directors own dicvorce.....(n)

You can have it. Intolerable Cruelty is tolerable, I think. Wheezy Joe's last scene, Clooney's performance -- good stuff.
...Ethan got divorced? I didn't know that. I knew that they re-wrote somebody else's script, but it doesn't seem stained by any personal vendetta to me.

maybe I should try it again as I was mid-divorce when I saw it.........I think it's the same way my Pops felt about Kramer Vs Kramer......:(

Ah. Yeah; I dunno.
Don't get me wrong -- I don;t think it's a necessary movie at all, let alone a necessary Coen brothers movie. I just think it's a bit more defensible than Ladykillers. I liked Hanks' weird perfromance, I loved that last shot (the cat), and the woman who played the owner of the house was good. I didn't like anything else I can think of, General included. Those characters did nothing for me.
Kramer vs, Kramer... if you ever get a chance, look at Cronenberg on Cronenberg -- the section regarding that movie. He was going through a divorce, too, thought KvK was utterly false and wound up writing the Brood. (Or maybe he'd already written it -- ? Anyway, he gets in a nice rant about KvK.)

The red band trailer is up, for those of you who want a little blood in your preview.
More Javier, though, which is very good.
