HUDSON OAKS, Texas - A young mother who may have been depressed apparently hanged three of her small daughters and herself in a closet using pieces of clothing and sashes, authorities said Tuesday.

A fourth child, an 8-month-old daughter, was also found dangling in the closet but was rescued.

“It’s horrendous. That’s all I can say,” Parker County Sheriff Larry Fowler said. Authorities did not immediately identify the dead children, ages 5, 3 and 2.

After the 23-year-old woman failed to show up for work, her sister, who lived nearby, forced her way into the locked residence in the Oak Hills mobile home park, about 25 miles west of Fort Worth in this rural community of 1,600 people.

Infant OK
The sheriff said the sister rescued the infant when she realized the baby girl was still alive. The infant was listed in good condition Tuesday at a Fort Worth hospital, Fowler said.

The sheriff said the hangings appeared to be murder-suicide because the trailer’s doors were locked from the inside and a relative said the woman had been depressed.

NBC affiliate KXAS reported that no suicide note was found at the scene.

The young mother and her girls were last seen alive Monday evening, authorities said. She was believed to be separated from her husband.

“I just got a big kick out of watching the kids play over there on her porch, and today it’s sad, very sad,” said neighbor Joyce Harris.

Grim precedent
Neighbors in the rural community of 1,600 were stunned. Less than five years earlier, another Hudson Oaks family was torn apart when Dee Etta Perez, 39, shot her three children, ages 4, 9 and 10, before killing herself.

Texas has seen a disturbing number of child killings by mothers in recent years.

Andrea Yates drowned her five children in the family’s Houston bathtub in 2001. In 2003, Deanna Laney beat her two young sons to death with stones in East Texas, and Lisa Ann Diaz drowned her daughters in a Plano bathtub. Dena Schlosser fatally severed her 10-month-old daughter’s arms with a kitchen knife in 2004.

All four of those women were found innocent by reason of insanity. Yates initially was convicted of capital murder, but it was overturned on appeal.

shit yeah, i'd be depressed too if i had 4 kids by the time i was 23 years old. i bet she was a hot piece of ass too back in her day. well as hot as trailer trash can get.

found innocent because of insanity?
i realise that they have been depressed and munted in the head due to their trailer trash status, but surely they knew the difference between right and wrong?

I will never accept innocent because you're batshit crazy. Regardless of mental state, these cunts killed children, and if it was the father who commited the crime he'd be 6 feet under already.

So true.

You have to be insane to kill your own children but that doesn't mean you shouldn't pay for it.

since none of us has a mental illness that is so bad we would do such a thing, it's hard to judge what a person is capable of when not medicated.

people found not guilty by reason of insanity don't typically just walk out of the courtroom, free to live the rest of their lives as they want.

sidenote: isn't hinkley still in a mental institution? can't be bothered to google it.

I realize we all have this sanctity of life thing but lets consider the facts here

1) Texas
2) Trailer Park
3) 4 kids at age 23

we probably didnt lose anyone who was going to contribute anything valuable to society

Wow, some of you are pretty harsh. I've been thinking quite a bit about this story since I heard about it yesterday, and it came up in conversation today when I was out at lunch with a couple of other moms and babies. It's peculiar in a way; maybe you'd think that with us all having little ones, maybe we would be the ones most angry or disgusted, but actually in discussing it we were all pretty much in agreement that we can find in our hearts a degree of compassion for this woman. This is not to say that any of us excuse it, but that her actions, whilst horrifying, are not incomprehensible.

What a dark and desperate place she must have been in, in her own mind. I understand that she had recently been granted a restraining order against the father of the baby, who is also the father (I believe it was said) of two of the other children - this leads me to think there must also be some history of domestic violence involved. At lunch, we talked about the fact that the 3 of us women, we are all relatively affluent, university educated, in good marriages with stable, supportive partners. None of us suffered to any great degree from post-partum depression. And yet we all still found (and continue to find) moments, often sleep-deprived, where we find ourselves silently wondering if we can cope with whatever minor crisis it is that is unfolding, or if we will pull apart at the seams. So what must it be like to live in grinding, endless poverty, with a partner whose presence is not only no comfort but an outright threat, to be so depressed you constantly feel you are fighting the current to keep your head above water?

If I could wager money on it, I would bet that this woman, in that moment when she was doing what she did, believed that she was committing an act of liberation. It is tragic that she felt this was her best available option.

Yeah, that's like saying 'I hate my broken down car so I'm going to burn down the whole neighborhood'.

Like I said, Texas. Old Southern values, she felt she could not escape from life as a houswife, that there was no way out and nothing beyond, because she was raised to feel that way.

You don't get it. What I'm saying is, she was 'freeing' them. I know it doesn't "make sense" to those of us thinking rationally. She was in such a state of mind that she thought there was not only no tenable future for herself but for her kids. I know it's hard to understand, and I'm not for a minute saying what she did was in any way right, but in her way, it was a selfless act.

(Of course, this is all conjecture on my part, I could be completely wrong. But I just don't get that this is about cruelty or abuse. She wasn't 'punishing' them. It's an act of sheer and utter desperation.)

There was a case here in England last year or the year before, where a woman threw herself and her two kids in front of a train. It turned out she was in an abusive marriage, and could not see any way out. If you say "why take the kids out as well", you're kind of missing the whole point.

some people are just so nuts that they need to be terminated before they effect other innocent people

like how an aggressive dog is put down

poor dog that will nip a child's ankle is killed while a mother that hangs 4 children gets compassion
