This sort of thing's been said, but with a month to go does anyone else think a lot more should be going on? For us fans here it's rather quality I think...top new site, appetizing sound clips and vids etc, but just in general promotion terms it seems rather quiet on Capitols part with only a month or so to go.

I'm no marketing director or record company know-it-all, and personally if the album rocks my socks off - which I have a lot of faith in by the way - how well it does isn't going to be my main priority. But by the look of these live shows, which seem the main promo tool at the minute and over the summer, it seems the Beasties are really going on another, new sort of level, and obviously the album isn't like anything they've done before.

So I'm 'pumped' as you'd say, just think more could be done. Is there a single? And if not, was that a collective decsion by the band and label? Off The Grid should be on the telly! Stuff like that is what slightly annoys me, because all I see is some tour dates - Brixton Academy and Live Earth UK I'll be going to big time! - and a possible date on Letterman. And hey, I'm jst glad they're back, but to me Capitol has fucked a few things up in recent years and it'd be nice if that didn't continue.

Having said all that, the Beasties don't really need any of it... Where were Capitol during Paul's Boutique 'downfall'? And look at that album since!

Fuck it, you know? They're promoting the music, with the music I guess. At least with the hum of Word of Mouth buzz, when the mainstream finally catches up it might feel dumb about having missed the scoop and pay a little attention.

Triple J have said nothing about it. They've mentioned the new Stripes, Qotsa and such. But nothing about this one. Either Capitol haven't done anything yet, or Triple J don't like the Beastie Boys any more. Filming with Merrick and Rosso may have killed their cred. Still, Triple J only really get behind shitty Australian groups, so more power to them.

Jay and the Doctor (breakfast) always take snide jabs at the Beastie Boys for their age. In the recent interviews done during the Down Under tour, they introduced the segment by insulting the group. And Robbie Buck referred to the band as 'rude' a few days later on his show, if I'm not mistaken. It's strange, but JJJ is sorta shit now anyway. So no big loss.

That's my perspective on how things are down here. Just sayin.

Personally, I think this is going to be a much lower-key release than TT5B. And maybe the boys want it that way this time...

Yeah, cool... I mean personally another album which as i said I'm rather confident I'm gonna love is all I need. Very much a self-buzz though

It's an instrumental album. You cant promote an instrumental album the way the music industry is set up today.

So, theres your answer. Dont expect to see magazine covers, music videos and performances at award shows.

they aren't supporting it because they know it'll be tough for it to sell more than a 100,000 copies even

any large amounts of money thrown at this project for promotion is sure to go in vane. the last thing the beasties need is to giantly promote a new record, get all of the casual listeners excited, and then not deliver with the hip-hop that the general fan base would be expecting. if it's under the radar and played down modestly, it has more of a chance of being a breakout success ("breakout" not necessarily meaning "smash hit", but meaning "wider-selling than estimated"), rather than the imminent dissapointment that would dominate the general masses were they to assume the usual bboy record.

I guess so. In the promo release there's references to the cult following of The In Sounds...so I'm assuming their expecting a similar vibe. There's a bunch of stuff I didn't think about (such as the likely waste of money on promo)... Cheers for making one's understanding a little clearer!

I'm interested to see how TMU is promoted.

And I'd be interested in the back-story of how the Beasties told Capitol about this project. Yauch said there is some give and take with the label. They got to release AIFST because they put out SGH at Capitol's request.

Because of the commercial disappointment of Paul's Boutique, I believe expectations were lower for CYH. And that blew up big time. So do they lower the bar for TMU?

Yeah, more than anything I'm interested to see how they'll approach it.

I think Off The Grid is potentially marketable, it could get air play and video channel play quite easily, so I'm curious if getting it out on the site hence youtube was a planned strategy as there was never any intention to release it. I'assuming so.

Anyway enough posting in my own thread, regardless of what goes down with the media I'm as excited as I've ever been regarding Beastie Boys.

I think it'll break 1 million no problem. Not in the first week or anything, but over the first couple months for sure. There are a surprising amount of people that like BB instrumentals.

They're doin a lot of festivals over the summer which is putting yourself in the shop window so to speak with all the TV, radio stuff thats goes with it & all the tons of non-Beastie fans who'll be exposed to them who wouldnt normally go to one of their shows.

i think the bboys will make up alot of the "lack of revenue" (in comparison to normal bboy albums) by doing the double-gigs in larger cities. given the instrumental night will be a bit cheaper, but they'll be recovering much money from the gala events in return for what the normal consumer turnout in record sales would rake in. obviously not nearly as much as a 4x platinum record, but a little exra nonetheless.

Entertainment Weekly has heard of it, anyway. They're currently polling which of these albums you're most excited about:

28%
White Stripes: "Icky Thump"
25%
Rihanna: "Good Girl Gone Bad"
24%
Beastie Boys: "The Mix-Up"
14%
Interpol: "Our Love to Admire"
9%
T.I: "T.I. Vs. T.I.P."
