So that's what it's called.

I had this last night, big time.

You know as you're "falling" asleep and your body jerks to keep you from falling, so you're fully awake again?

That's hypnic jerk. I was hoping to find tips online for how to overcome it, because last night, it lasted all night long. I'm sure I got some sleep that I don't remember, but I sure don't remember any. So tired.

If anybody else has tips on how to beat this, let me know. Hopefully that was a one-time thing -- not the jerk itself, but a whole night of it. I've never had that happen before.

i hate when that happens and you kick or punch the wall or headboard. FUCK! WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT ALL ABOUT!

Don't think there's a way to beat it, man - it's wired into your subconscious. But if it's happening all the time maybe you're misfiring due to stress or something. Have you been stressed lately?

It's super funny when you're in bed with someone else and either you or they get a big body-twisting hypnic jerk and freak the other person out.

OR YOU PUNCH THEM IN THE FACE!

SORRY HONEY! HYPNIC JERK!

POW! UH OH! IT HAPPENED AGAIN!

Are your sure Hypnic Jerk is not Turd's nickname?

I've got something going on, yeah. Hopefully this passes fast.

It usually just happens now and again; last night it was all night long. And I was already really tired, so I'm kind of fried today.

Overdose on alcohol. If you can't do that, take a hot bath and drink 2 dark beers!

I've been dealing with "restless leg syndrome" for about 4 months now.....it started out as kind of a way to rock or lull myself to sleep, cross one leg over the other and kick away, but has begun to be a problem.....really I now have to make a conscious effort not to start it....twitches also sometimes accompany it or holding my breath involuntarily, very bizarre shit....drives da lady mad when she stays the night....:(

I'll bet. :(

Is that treatable, though? Seems like I saw that something could be done with that.

Used to be that people believed it was a sign of excessive masturbation.

Really?...huh.....I have noticed that my vision seems to be fading as well....damn nuns may have been on to something....maybe it's all connected!....and I may be abusing the condition as a way to encourage my partner to provide me with release in order to bring on the night.....:D

I think I will start to add Hypnic Jerk and Hysterical Blindness to my reasons for editing. I have already been using Restless Leg Syndrome.

Kind of similar. Supposedly it's right as you pass from waking to sleeping. The muscles relax, the brain interprets it as losing control or falling or whatever and tries an emergency landing.

It's the moment when the muscles separate from the brain in a way, so your body isn't responding all night long to whatever you're dreaming.

Actually, it happens to me sometimes. It almost feels like my heart skips a beat. It is not a good feeling when you are almost in deep REMs.

I just want to mention that the best treatment I have found to deal with such sleep matters is swimming after work, seriously, it really seems to nullify brain/muscle discord when you go to crash….oh and alcohol just exacerbates the condition for me…....

sometimes after a long day, my legs, or more so my shoulders will start to twitch when im trying to get to sleep. i don't know how that would relate yto what your talking about, becuase it usually starts as soon as i lay down, and i really dont even have a chance to fall asleep till it, and my body relaxes itself

I get this sometimes too and it's weird as my head feels really disassociated from my body and that my legs are kind of sinking into the bed. And then I get the twitch

Only one or two last night. (y) Not bad. Maybe six, six and a half hours' sleep.

But, at least, finally, some sleep!

I'd figured if that had kept up last night, I might start trying St. John's Wart. It never really helped me with depression, but I figured, maybe a little sleepiness...?

I need something healthier than whiskey or a polo mallet.

Have tried the swimming regiment?.....I swear by it man.....St Johns never worked for me as matter of fact for some reason it's usage was accompanied with a raise in blood pressure....or maybe experiment with B12 or my sister suggests Kava Kava.....doctor,please, I'm on my knees, outside the door she took for more, what a drag it is, getting old......:(

I don't have a gym membership right now and the public pools are shit, so swimming is out for the time being. Probably in a couple of months. (y)

This is just a temporary thing -- not a big deal expect when it was happening.

i don't know if you've ever heard of lucid dreaming (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucid_dreaming) (in a nutshell it's when you're dreaming, but you're fully aware that you're dreaming and you can do anything you want within it), but apparently one of the more intense ways to do it is to recognize the hypnagogic stage where the hypnic jerks happen, and try and be aware of it while it's going on, and then you can transition directly from being awake to being in a dream. i dunno i'm not totally sure how it works but here's what wikipedia says

Wake-Initiated Lucid Dream (WILD)

The Wake-Initiated Lucid Dream "occurs when the sleeper enters REM sleep with unbroken self-awareness directly from the waking state".[25] There are many techniques aimed at entering a WILD. The key to these techniques is recognizing the hypnagogic stage, which is within the border of being awake and being asleep. If a person is successful in staying aware while this stage occurs, they will eventually enter the dream state while being fully aware that it is a dream.

There are key times at which this state is best entered; while success at night after being awake for a long time is very difficult, it is relatively easy after being awake for 15 or so minutes and in the afternoon during a nap. Common techniques for inducing WILDs abound. Dreamers often count, envision themselves climbing or descending stairs, chant to themselves, explore elaborate, passive sexual fantasies, control their breathing, concentrate on relaxing their body from their toes to their head, allow images to flow through their "mind's eye" and envision themselves jumping into the image, or use various forms of concentration to keep their mind awake, while still being calm enough to let their body sleep. During the actual transition into the dream state, one is likely to experience sleep paralysis, including rapid vibrations,[12] a sequence of very loud sounds and a feeling of twirling into another state of body awareness, "to drift off into another dimension". Also there is frequently a sensation of falling rapidly or dropping through the bed as one enters the dream state or the sensation of entering a dark black room from which one can induce any dream scenario of one's choosing, simply by concentrating on it. The key to being successful is to not panic, especially during the transition which can be quite sudden.

so basically, if you can learn to deal with it somehow, you can do just about anything you want. i dunno, sounds cool

Interesting.

Yeah, I went through a time when I was sometimes controlling my dreams. It led to a screenplay, more than anything.

my flatmate thought he could do that for a while, so i gave him a book on how to take control of his lucid dreams more effectively a while back. i should dig it out and see if i can teach myself or if it's a big pile of horsecrap.

scott said he mostly flew, went to the supermarket, and shagged people in the street. hey, that's what i do in my daily life.

he gets nightmareish realistic dreams though too. like waking up from 'sleep' and seeing a tsunami come zombie victim on the floor trying to get him, running out of his room and forcing the door closed behind him. or evil pixies jumping on either side of his body. agghh! nutbar!

me, i haven't been able to control, i don't think, but there have been times were i could swear on my life that i have felt sensations. one dream, uh, i was in a bath with a woman (no giggling at the back there!) and was sitting between her legs so i was sort of being embraced, and whoever this was was scooping the water onto my knees so it went down my legs and thighs, and i swear to god i could feel that sensation when i snapped out of it. no, i wasn't pissing myself. and no, i'm not attracted to women so i wasn't just HORNY.

i have dreamed of kissing someone though, i forget who, some random friend, and waking up and thinking 'i can tell you exactly how he kisses and what it feels like' the sensation was so.. real.

Hypnic jerk - so that's what it's called. I get it from time to time, usually when i fall asleep on the sofa though rather than in bed.

I think i must sit up a lot when i'm asleep though. When I used to sleep over at a friends house i used to crack my forehead on the sunbed that was over the bed about 10 times a night :/

Kind of a relief to know it has a name, isn't it?

I finally dug in a few days ago and researched it.

Ya learn something new every week or so.

I can usually control my dreams.

Once I realize I'm dreaming I end up having sex with multiple womens. Or flying. Its always one of those two that I choose to do.

Or if I'm having trouble controlling them to do what I want and something sketchy is happening..I force myself to wake up saying "You are dreaming wake up. WAKE UP!" and I do.

And to go off on another tangent.....when I was younger I thought god spoke to me in my sleep. I heard a "[Rock] wake up, you are pissing your pants." so I woke up and sure enough I was pissing my pants.

I was in some weird limbo area between sleeping and waking up the other day. It felt like someone was lifting me up by my shoulders, holding me a for a few seconds (and I couldnt move) then dropping me back on my bed. At this moment I woke up and was, understandable, a bit freaked out.

It felt like my eyes were open as well.
