The reason why there are more lurkers is because no one feels welcome here when there are insults thrown at each other all the time, especially to new members.

if any of you lurkers know how to make a good, easy lentil soup i'd appreciate a response
3 tablespoons extra–virgin olive oil
2 cups chopped onions
1 cup chopped celery stalks plus chopped celery
leaves for garnish
1 cup chopped carrots
2 garlic cloves, chopped
4 cups (or more) vegetable broth
1 1/4 cups lentils, rinsed, drained
1 14 1/2–ounce can diced tomatoes in juice
Balsamic vinegar (optional)
Heat oil in heavy large saucepan over medium–high heat. Add onions, celery, carrots, and garlic; sauté until vegetables begin to brown, about 15 minutes. Add 4 cups broth, lentils, and tomatoes with juice and bring to boil. Reduce heat to medium–low, cover, and simmer until lentils are tender, about 35 minutes.
Transfer 2 cups soup (mostly solids) to blender and puree until smooth. Return puree to soup in pan; thin soup with more broth by 1/4 cupfuls, if too thick. Season with salt, pepper, and a splash of vinegar, if desired. Ladle soup into bowls. Garnish with celery leaves.

Pfft, call that a lentil soup? I wouldn't feed that to my CAT, and she hates lentils anyway (probably).
INGREDIENTS
1 onion, chopped
60 ml olive oil
2 carrots, diced
2 stalks celery, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 g dried oregano
1 bay leaf
1 g dried basil
1 (14.5 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
385 g dry lentils
1895 ml water
15 g spinach, rinsed and thinly sliced
30 ml vinegar
salt to taste
ground black pepper to taste
12 beers
1 oz high grade marijuana
DIRECTIONS
In a big-ass soup pot, heat oil over medium heat. Not too hot, bitch! Add onions, carrots, and celery; cook and stir the motherfuckers until onion is tender. Stir in garlic, bay leaf, oregano, and basil; cook that shit for 2 minutes.
Stir in lentils, and add water and tomatoes to the party. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat, and simmer for at least 1 hour. In this time you can drink a few more beers and have a blaze, maybe even a wank if you're in the mood. When ready to serve stir in spinach, and cook until it wilts. Not before, not after, it's gotta be dead on wilt-o'-clock. Stir in vinegar, and season to taste with salt and pepper, and more vinegar if desired.
Eat that bitch son! Make a big manly sandwich with loads of meat and dunk it in, that's some tasty shit!

I just really don't have a whole lot to say anymore. Not that I think I'm particularly missed or anything. But, hi, y'all.
padster seems pretty confident about his recipe, plus it involves beer and jerking off, i dunno. i guess i'll try both
can i add brown rice to either of those without affecting any of the rest of the recipe? my understanding is that lentils and brown rice together combine to make some sort of supernutrient dish or something, and that's mainly the only reason i'm looking into the lentil thing. i saw some other lentil soup recipes that involved brown rice and the only thing that was different-looking about the recipe was the fact that included rice, soooooo
i suppose this could go into the lentils thread actually but fuck, we're all here, aren't we

*bump*
slow saturday night so... thought I'd share some of my statistical analysis of the BBMB, true amazing stuff I'd say! In terms of lurking vs posting- if this were a war the odds would be stacked horrifically against posters!
As of today 1/18/09 there are 30,586 registered users (!) of that:
21,958 have 0 posts (72%)
2,971 have 1 post (10%)
1,323 have 2 posts (4%)
653 have 3 posts (2%)
476 have 4 posts (1.5%)
300 have 5 posts (1%)
230 have 6 posts (.75%)
185 have 7 posts (.6%)
166 have 8 posts (.54%)
130 have 9 posts (.4%)
105 have 10 posts (.3%)
so of the 30,586 registered users 28,497 have 10 posts or less (93%!!!!)
of the remaining of 2,089 lets call this group frequent(er) posting registered users (approximately 7%):
600 have between 11 & 20 posts (2%)
525 have between 20 & 50 posts (1.7%)
262 have between 50 & 100 posts (.85%)
210 have between 100 & 200 posts (.7%)
85 have between 200 & 300 posts (.3%)
83 have between 300 & 500 posts (.3%)
54 have between 500 & 750 posts (.2%)
36 have between 750 & 1,000 posts (.1%)
53 have between 1,000 & 1,500 posts (.2%)
70 have between 1,500 & 3,000 posts (.23%)
55 have between 3,000 & 6,000 posts (.18%)
AND
40 have >6,000 posts (.13%)
As was stated quite eloquently before- they are a lot more people here then you would suppose- just the vast majority of them ain't saying much!
As someone who lurked on her for YEARS with very few posts and now find myself in the top 99th percentile of posts, (not proud or bragging- straight up analysis!) I'm fascinated by the mind set of people who are chronic non-posting followers of the board.
I don't remember what my reason for reading and not posting were then and for posting more frequently now. And I certainly wasn't on her with 0 or 1 posts because as soon as I was on here I was posting about the boys. It just took a while for me to care about the rest of the board. In fact I don't think I checked anything but beastie general for at least a year posting like once or twice a month.
Anyway don't want this to be about me but I would like to hear some more from our friends out there in the shadows - whats up with y'all?
lets hear some of your stories.
Welcome to the fray.

thanks.
yeah funk, I was fairly disturbed by it. especially when I noticed that instead of doing that I could of being asleep. stupid, stupid ocd.
BUT...
still hoping to coax a few more seldon heard voices out into the fray, as evidenced by the staggering percentages it seems akin to the wealth disaparity in the world- less than 1% weild much more influence than the other 99%!
But unlike the "real" world there is a true democratic answer to this- come out of the shadows and POST!
People are forever complaining about this place and ringing its death knell but it seems to me that it has a lot to do with the lack of new voices being added to community. There are certainly some from time to time but their really is the potential for so much more.
No dis to the long time voices of the board- you are, at the moment, what makes this place SO great and unique... but just seems like it could be greater if we didn't so closely mirror some of the most f#@!ed up attributes of society at large. Again, one man's opinion,
so...
sound off lurkers, be nice to hear from you!

maybe some of those are robots
I don't know if this is a joke or a something I don't get- like spamming robots or something- and I will admit to not contacting minton or tpk so I don't know if the accounts that get deleted are REALLY deleted i.e. where most of these accounts created to spam the board and then got deleted but still are accessible through the board records? Or are they just people who got all excited about the board, created an account and then thought better of throwing into the fray here. Maybe minton &/ or tpk could sound off on that. Again- would be nice to hear from some more people.
But I do want to be clear on one thing, I am in no way robot intolerant! I, for one, welcome the clearly overwhelming amount of robots who get there circuits all in a bunch to join the board but then are too busy with there demanding robotic lives that they can't be bothered to POST, dammit! Its cool I get it- its hard out there for a 'bot. I feel ya my transistored brothers, all I ask is the occasional check in so I may know the pulse of the robot community, especially as it concerns fucking up my day to day life. Thanks in advance for the heads up.
And Ms Wood thank you for not insinuating that I am anything but conciliatory to our (eventual) robot overlords. I live to serve.
End of transmission.

Pres Zount
01-19-2009, 10:38 AM
ok, I loled at that. If that were true I would feel so incredibly violated.
Well lets think about other boards you've joined and not posted in.
Last board I joined was a biker forum because I was buying a new motorbike at the time and posted about 10 times then stopped. Reason is because the board owner had a stress about people not joining in the biking outings he/she was trying to organise. But I don't think that the board owners here are where near over-zealous - more anti-zealous.
I've joined boards to get some information because you can't read the forum unless you've joined - but again, not a problem here as its open to all.
Botnets - like D.Wood said or I assume she was suggesting at. Maybe, but most well run php boards such as this actively remove such accounts to stop spamming and it shows with the lack of spamming here.
Some people only look in one forum - go up to the beastie section and I don't recognise any of the names there. I would say beasties are out of top ten bands for me - but in '98 when first came here they was at the top. People change their bands all the time which may explain why the fleeting interest and then leaving when they realise they prefer emo music cus their friends do.
Poor quality forums, hard to navigate? Not a problem here I would say, very well laid out.
Board attacks? Maybe, when you get the odd 'Beasties Sux lol' threads that every1 ignores. 20 or so may come from another board to try and wind up the natives - we've done it here and it happens at others. But I think some are far too quick witted here for them to make any impact.
So a couple of variables for why there is so many members with no or a couple of posts. I'm sure there is others. But I do think its just people sign up randomly and then leave, forgetting they even came here. Maybe looking album downloads or something?

All very reasonable explanations I'd say although this is the only board or forum I have ever belonged to so I had no idea that was such a common thing. But I am inclined to agree with you to a point - but it doesen't explain all of our non-posting masses.
Exhibit A : Ever since our wonderful mods fixed the thread views so it no longer just reads posts + 1 you'll notice that views are generally pretty close to # of posts (or at least within a few standard deviations) but there a few on here that have THOUSANDS (!) more views than posts! Admittedly these are of the older, longer running, more general interest variety- but c'mon! There's a lot of people out there not posting. Go and look at how many people have viewed the beasties video thread in bgeneral. It's not all 'bots.
All I'm saying
