Beastie Boys to be Honored as Webby Artists of the Year at the 11th Annual Webby Awards

Trio to Be Saluted Alongside David Bowie, eBay's Meg Whitman, and YouTube-Co-founders Chad Hurley and Steve Chen.

New York, NY (PRWEB) June 1, 2007 -- Beastie Boys will be honored as Webby Artists of the Year at The 11th Annual Webby Awards on June 5th in New York City, organizers announced today.

The hip hop pioneers will be recognized for their innovative 2006 concert film, "Awesome, I F***ing Shot That", which was filmed entirely by dozens of audience members using hand-held cameras provided by the group, epitomizing the Internet's interactive spirit and foreshadowing the boom in user-generated video. The trio has also been a longtime advocate of more flexible copyright rules that allow artists and fans to legally swap, share, and remix music.

"From the Internet to video to music, Beastie Boys have created a totally unique, two-way relationship with their fans," said David-Michel Davies, executive director of The Webby Awards. "They embody the kind of collaboration and exchange of ideas that the Web is all about."

Beastie Boys will be saluted alongside Webby Awards winners in a wide range of categories from Blog to Fashion to Weird, as well as three other Special Achievement honorees - David Bowie (Webby Lifetime Achievement), the eBay community and CEO Meg Whitman (Webby Lifetime Achievement), and YouTube co-founders Steve Chen and Chad Hurley (Webby Person of the Year).

5 WORD SPEECHES FROM WEBBY WINNERS, INCLUDING DAVID BOWIE, EBAY/MEG WHITMAN, BEASTIE BOYS, YOUTUBE FOUNDERS

From David Bowie and Beastie Boys to eBay's Meg Whitman and YouTube co-founders Steve Chen and Chad Hurley, winners at Tuesday night's 11th Annual Webby Awards proved once again that less is more with a speedy procession of the awards' trademark five-word speeches.

Unlike most awards ceremonies, The Webby Awards limits speeches to just five words, a rule that is only slightly relaxed for special achievement honorees like Bowie.

"I only get five words?" Bowie asked. He continued: "Sh*t, that was five. Four more there. That's three," concluding: "Two," before exiting the stage.

Other special achievement speech highlights included:

"Bidding starts at 99 cents."
- eBay CEO and President Meg Whitman on behalf of the eBay community (Webby Lifetime Achievement)

"Can anyone fix my computer?"
- Beastie Boys, who were named Webby Artists of the Year for their 2006 concert film, "Awesome, I F***ing Shot That," which was filmed entirely by audience members.

"YouTubers, this is for you."
- Steve Chen and Chad Hurley, co-founders of YouTube (Webby Person of the Year)
