I went to see a good friend of mine from uni this weekend and he wouldn't stop coming out with racist remarks, and not just racist horseplay either - really strong stuff.

He was always a multicultural kind of guy but has been slipping further and further right the more I've known him and has now slided into a very racist dip on the tolerance-o-graph which I'm not sure he can get out of.

The entire weekend was spent with him going on about "blacks" and how most of them are ruining society because they can't abide by the law. He said, and I quote, that "they should all go back to the cotton-picking fields until they can learn to become decent members of society". This coming from an upstanding young gentleman who's been chased by the police because of unpaid fines (I don't know what for) amounting to £2,000 and who has recently admitted to me that he's been involved in some serious class A drug related abuse.

Is it worth staying friends with somebody who's become such a bigot? :/

Omg, this is like that episode of Peep Show, where Mark befriends a Nazi!

I think you should do what Mark did. First have fun with this guy (stick sausages on doors, drink some pints, record some music) and then report him and act like you've always hated him. Don't forget the magic words: "Good riddance, you fucking nazi!"

"French - he thinks you're French! I've already told you, he's not French!"

I hear that!....Weeks ago a ex-colleague and I went out for a pint… when I asked him how his new gig suited him he replied “They’re working me like a plantation nigger…”…without a word in return I downed my beer, got up and walked out….fuck’n clown….what gets me the most is NEVER in our relationship or in the way I carry myself as a person would it have been implied that shit like that fly’s with me…the polar opposite is true.....

^instead of getting all pissy, why didn't you let him know that it wasn't really appropriate, and that "they're working me like a plantation African-American" would've been more suitable?

Hindsight being what it is I do wish I would have confronted and engaged him....but I was choked up and thought that sluging the beer back and leaving him with the tab would leave some kind of indelible impression.....:o

If I were you, I'd call him on it and let him know that shit isn't appropriate. And if he keeps it up....I'd cut him off.

A friend of mine hangs out with this racist guy...he constantly uses the N word, and makes Mexican remarks. Pretty soon it rubbed off on my very non-racist friend. Unfortunate.
