i really want to buy a digital camera now, and ultimately i'd like to get it by this time next week.
i'd like to stay under $200 if possible, but a little more would be alright
so what brands are good? what sort of specs should i look for?

even for video, get the cannon
i got this a few months back from this extremely cheap site. (http://www.equipmentexpress.co.uk/shop/acatalog/Samsung_NV3_inc_Samsung_Leather_case_.html)
Usually it's £300 on the high street. It's a great camera and it's looks pretty funky too.

I bought a Samsung one too around Christmas for about £150 and it's lovely -easy to use and takes good pics. It's 10m pixel but I just set it to 6 for 'normal' use.

mines a little complicated but it has a wicked macro zoom on it for extreme close ups.

I have a Canon 35 mil that I love. I read all the consumer reports and Sony has been making great digital cameras. I bought a Sony Cyber-Shot but I plan on buying a higher end digital camera in the near future. Either a Canon or Nikon.
The Sony is a very good camera but if you are using the flash expect a second delay before the photo is snapped. It drives me crazy because when I see a particular moment I really want it to be instantaneous. I try not to use the flash and go with natural light. I wish I could find a digital Canon that would be compatible with my wide angle and zoom lenses.

i'm leaning toward this one (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8266164&st=powershot&lp=3&type=product&cp=1&id=1170290185654)
it's a canon powershot elph, and its $250. so a little over what i was hoping, but i think that one is worth the jump up compared to the cheaper model.
Elph's are good little cameras. They are great because they are not bulky and can easily be taken anywhere. They also take good photos. I have a 35 mil Elph and I loved using it in a pinch. Alas, the digital age.....it is now in a drawer with my feather and inkwell.

I find Canon's hideous and the two people I know who owned them dropped them once and they broke.
I played around on my brother's canon before it broke and wasnt highly impressed.

well, after talking to some people at work today, and piddling about on the web, i went with the Canon PowerShot SD1000 7.1MP Digital Elph (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000NK8L6W/ref=olp_product_details/105-4878707-2451663?ie=UTF8&coliid=I2U62E1YEJX9E7&seller=&colid=CG9M76A3H2OE)
i like the small size, and its pretty good quality and decent price for what i want to do with it. hopefully i'll have some nice pics to share in about two weeks

sorry, I forgot im not allowed to voice my opinion in an "input encouraged" thread
I don't think that's what it was about. More about the fact that you said you played with your brother's canon.
