haha...from http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/commentary/la-oe-kenney5jun05,0,5172018.story

some highlights:

Day 5: Gandhi went to prison. So did Martin Luther King Jr. So did Robert Downey Jr. and Martha Stewart Jr. and I think Nelson Mandela Jr. Mandela was imprisoned for, like, 50 years or something for being black and also for driving an uninsured vehicle, if I'm reading Wikipedia correctly. Nicky often mentions me and Gandhi and how incredibly thin we both are and how she wonders if he used bronzer.

and

Lately I'm identifying with the Jews and all the horrible things that happened to them during Vietnam.

Breaking news.....She is out of jail already.

Paris Hilton was freed from jail this morning, three days after she began serving what was originally to be a 45-day sentence for violating probation, according to TMZ.com.

Our jails are overcrowded so when there is a influx of prisoners they release inmates according to behavior and the crime committed. If a bunch of prisoners are brought in with assault or robbery charges and there are not enough beds they start releasing prisoners.

Michelle Rodriguez from the show LOST was arrested for drunk driving and she only spent 1 day in jail.

They should send her to stay in the Hilton Hotel near East Midlands airport on the M1. That would be punishment for anyone.

I read the same thing. I have heard of prisoners going on hunger strikes but they don't get to go home. They added days to her sentence for the option of house arrest. Somehow I think being at home is not going to be a hardship for Paris.

She might go back......

Hours after Paris Hilton was sent home under house arrest Thursday, the judge who put her in jail for violating her reckless-driving probation ordered her into court to determine whether she should be put back behind bars.

Hilton must report to court at 9 a.m. Friday, Superior Court spokesman Allan Parachini told The Associated Press.

^ yes. apparently the sentencing judge is rather livid because he specifically ruled that she could NOT serve her sentence under house arrest.

Yeti

Has anyone been watching the coverage? It is hysterical.

Hundreds were outside her house and the sheriff's dept sent a car to pick her up. A make-up artist showed up to get her all pretty and then a big truck with portable heaters, chairs and tables showed up because she was going to have a party tonight. Then they cuffed her and took her to court. The helicopter followed the sheriff's car from her house to the court. She was then sentenced back to jail and she had a breakdown. Screaming and crying and they took her back to jail.

She got caught in the middle of the Sheriff and Judge's infighting and now she has to pay.

I found it very funny that one of Bush's military bigwigs was replaced today and they did not even bother to breakaway from coverage for that newsconference.

This Paris Hilton story is hilarious.

It is strange that some people, besides Skye, seem to be happy that she has to go back to jail. Me? I would rather see the prison hold true criminals for their full sentence, then to see some minor offender(of the law, not decency) have to take up space.

FREE PARIS!

um no. I'd rather not see rich people pay thier way out of jail or pay a doctor come up with phony medical conditions to get them out of jail when poor people who are also ill with physical and mental problems have to stay behind bars.

I'm sorry, but you don't get out of jail because you don't feel good. I think she deserves to know what it's like to live an unpriviledged life. because she's gotten plenty of millage out of being privlidged.

the sentence was always 45 days...

the court system and the jail system are two different entities...

the jail could still release her after 23 days based on good behavior...
which she has now received credit 6 days served..

she could still get out in 16 or 17 days based on her behavior in the custody of the L.A. jail system

Yeti

Yes, but they now might make her serve the 45 day sentence. It has previously been reduced to 23 days. It is not determined yet but we will see.

I hear Paris will write a book in jail and call it the Shawskank Redemption.

what I'm saying is that the sentence was never "reduced"

the sentence was 45 days and it remains 45 days...

but the common rule in the jail system is that if you follow the rules and behave, you serve half the time , hence the 23 day term... the jails are overcrowded and it is up to the county jails, not the judge, when to release their prisoners...

while I am a huge advocate of her serving her time and not being above the law, it is not fair to punish Paris for the Sheriff's dept contempt of court...

she will get out in two and a half weeks...

I have to admit that Tal is correct. Jon Stewart dropped the line the other night and a tabloid writer said it again today.

A photoshop of Paris' book Shawskank Redemption would be good and should be forwarded to The Daily Show.

The more I hear on the news the more I think Paris got the shaft and the video will be out next week. Really, she was sent home and brought back. The sheriff does usually make the decisions on the release. She got caught in the middle. The entire thing is really hysterical.

Knuckles, my boy Aiden is almost 10 months old. He pulls himself up on everything and is a real worm or depending on his mood a snake. He is usually very happy and has not gotten sick once. His last visit to the doctor for shots we were told he is tall and skinny. He is in the 90th percentile for length and something like the 40th for weight. He eats very well so I guess he will reach my height of 6'3 or better. I just hope he can stave off the pot belly.

but the common rule in the jail system is that if you follow the rules and behave, you serve half the time , hence the 23 day term... the jails are overcrowded and it is up to the county jails, not the judge, when to release their prisoners...

that may be common where you live, but not every state is like that. in florida, you're supposed to serve 85% of your sentence (unless your sentence carries a minimum mandatory term, which means you have to do that time day for day, no gain time). the county jail here gives 5 days for every 30, so that's 1 day for every 6, instead of california's 1 for every 4. so the 23 days she was supposed to do isn't really the calculation of her 45, minus gain time. if she gets normal california gain time, she should serve 34 days, minus the 6 she already has credit for.

and cmute, paris is in jail, not prison. jail sentences are a year or less, prison is for sentences over one year. so, paris' incarceration has not caused a murderer to be released in order to make room for her.

from the article i read, she got 3 years probation for her dui. here in florida, a first time dui is the equivalent of a misdemeanor traffic violation, and the most you can serve on probation is 1 year. her fine was $1500. here, for a first time dui where the person blows under .20, the fine is $250. over .20, the fine is $500. so, in general terms, her sentence for a first time dui is much harsher than it would have been here.

she was caught driving twice. here, the very first time she'd have been in jail for at least 30 days for driving on the suspended license, and if she did that, then her probation would likely be reinstated. the second time, her probation would be revoked and she'd have to serve 6 months max on the dui and the suspended license charge would run concurrent. those 3 offenses (1 dui and 2 DWLS) would then make her a habitual traffic offender in florida, and she'd lose her license for 5 years. if caught driving on that suspension, that's a felony, and depending on what judge you get and what your priors are, you can definitely end up in prison for it.

i havent heard anything about 1 to 4 gain time out here or relating to the Paris case, but I see what you are saying...

in texas and california, an inmate is usually released on good behavior after serving 50% of the sentence... thats why they kept throwing the number 23 around before she turned herself in to the county sheriff...

the thing that I dont get is she turns herself in before midnight on sunday night and she gets released at 2:00 in the morning on thursday and gets credit for 6 days...

she called Barbra Walters collect to tell us all that she's not going to "act dumb" anymore. WHew. what a releif.

Paris Hilton says she will no longer "act dumb."

The reality TV star and relentless publicity-seeker spoke with Barbara Walters by phone Sunday, a day after releasing a statement saying she hoped the media would focus on "more important things" than her 45-day jail sentence, according to ABC News' Web site.

"I used to act dumb. ... That act is no longer cute," ABC quoted Hilton as saying.

After spending three days in jail in a reckless driving case, Hilton was briefly released to home confinement Thursday for an undisclosed medical condition. An outraged judge sent her back to jail Friday. She is now housed in the medical ward of a maximum-security detention center.

According to ABC News, the call came after Hilton's mother, Kathy, phoned Walters. During the conversation, the 26-year-old socialite called her mom on another line, found out her mother was talking to Walters, and then called Walters collect. All jail inmates are required to call collect.

Hilton has been saying that she is changed by her jailhouse experience, and she repeated that theme with Walters: "Now, I would like to make a difference. ... God has given me this new chance."

hahahahaahahahaha. yup.

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Paris Hilton's parents visited their daughter after breezing past others waiting to see loved ones -- an incident that raised new complaints that the heiress is receiving special treatment.

The visit came less than a week after Hilton was reassigned to house arrest days after being jailed for violating parole. The 26-year-old celebrity was later ordered back to jail.

Alvina Floyd, one visitor to the at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility, waited more than four hours to visit her fiance. It normally takes two hours, and Floyd, 20, blamed the Hiltons for the delay.

"I have to be at work later," she said. "I can't wait here all day."

Shatani Alverson, 23, said she was hustled out of the jail's visiting room moments after her husband walked in because of the Hiltons. She was told to come back after lunch.

Steve Whitmore, a sheriff's spokesman, said it was routine for high-profile inmates to receive visitors during lunch, a time when the visiting room is normally cleared out and closed.

The visit came shortly after the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors ordered Sheriff Lee Baca to respond by next week to allegations of favoritism for reassigning Hilton to house arrest. At the time, Baca cited an undisclosed medical condition as the reason for making the decision.

Hilton was sent to a medical ward, where sheriff's officials said it costs $1,109.78 a day to house a female inmate compared to $99.64 a day in the general population.

Mary Tiedeman, who regularly visits the jails as a monitor for the ACLU, said the area where Hilton was being housed was usually reserved for high-security inmates or those worse off than Hilton has appeared.

"I don't know what her health issue is, but you have got to have a pretty intense medical or mental health problem to be in that part of the jail," she said.
