im glad it isnt 1996 because that would mean 311 would have a bunch of casual fans that only like one or two songs. i cant wait til they stop making albums and just tour all the time. they can cater to real fans then. i just want one more solid album from them and that's it. the last two were ok but i know they can do better.

haha yeah. I remember when I was 15 I bought that album on the strength of the 'Down' single. got the CD home, put it on and then promptly walked back into town and exchanged it for Endtroducing which older skater friends had told me was cool. even at 15 I knew 311 sucked.

When I heard their first album, I thought they were ok. The bassist is probably the best thing they've got going for them though.

They're also very very repetitive, especially the drumming. You can just about hear the same drumming pattern on almost every c.d.

Yeah, I pretty much hate them now. They're pretty much Linkin Park to me now.

why do you hate them so much? they're not really mainstream enough to get sick of hearing them on the radio, so i dont understand your logic. there are plenty of worse bands out there for you to hate.

i try not to force 311 down anyone's throat. if they like them, cool, if not, oh well. i dont expect anyone to get a 311's fan fascination with the band, so when i meet someone who is into 311 as much as me, it's fuckin awesome. it hardly ever happens though

dont ever compare 311 to linkin park. they cant even hold 311's jock strap. 311 invented the style that made linkin park what they are and then 311 went on to do different styles.

i agree that Pnut(bass) is a great bassist but to say the drumming is repetitive is uneducated. chad sexton does have his own style that is easily recognizable but he is a pure genius at his craft.

The reason none of you can get into 311 is because you aren't really LISTENING to them. The proper way is put on a seashell necklace, flip flops, cargo shorts, a backwards hat, Oakleys, Striped Polo. Hemp lanyard is optional.

I did see them with the Pharcyde and Cypress Hill a long time ago (1995 maybe?), and I will admit I had fun when they were playing.

And yeah...the only real thing they got going is the bassist.

I used to be a big fan of 311 back in the 90s. I kinda fell out of touch with their last few albums, but Pooty and I did bump into P-Nut on a flight.

One interesting fact about the 311/Beastie connection is that back around 1999ish they had a poll on the board to see who we would want to see the Beasties tour with.

I remember two of the choices were 311 and Rage. I can't remember who else was on there, but Rage ended up winning the poll and then they scheduled the Rhyme and Reason tour with Rage...but unfortunately that tour never materialized due to Mike's shoulder injury.

311 Love right here my friend!

311 and The Beasties are TWO OF MY FAVORITE GROUPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have blessed by the Music Gods here in 2007.

Dig it:

311 at RED ROCKS on August 15th
AND
BEASTIE BOYS at RED ROCKS on August 16th

TWO EPIC NIGHTS IN A ROW AT RED ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't know where you dwell, but you absolutely HAVE TO BE HERE in August for these two shows!

I've got a buddy coming in from out of state for both shows!
Haters will be haters, but to those who also understand the 311 Unity Vibe, it's all good.

fuck. i wish red rocks was on a weekend so that i could go. im just hitting up all the cali shows with the exception of Santa Barbara, that's on a weekday too. the Irvine show is going to have a sweet lineup. they added the wailers to the show. it's going to be nice to see them again. im so jealous you get to see 311 and the beasties on back to back nights. that's awesome.

I'm seeing them on July 4th with Matisyahu.

I like em enough even though they kinda get old pretty quick. I think going to 311 day 2004 is what burned me the fuck out on them. It was overkill.

Soundsystem and Transistor are good albums.

I hope they've changed their live show around cuz I'm goddamn tired of the massive drum solo thing.

YOU KNOW........a decade ago, a friend said, "Right off the top of your skull, name 2 bands you'd like to see together."

I said, "Beastie Boys and 311."

Well, a decade later, I get VERY CLOSE To my wish!

I'll have those 2 days off to party, enjoy, and soak it all IN! Knowing you're a fan of both, I sincerely wish you could be here! We've got a 6-pack of stoked individuals attending both nights with me.

Having tickets for both shows now (FINALLY!!!!!!!), the reality is slowly BUT SURELY setting in!

I had a shitty night tonight. But, after getting home tonight, I took a moment to reflect on the fact that this too shall pass.
And, when it does......................August 15th and August 16th will be waiting for me!

Pnut and Chad Sexton hold it down.
For those who play drums pick up the albums music or grassroots, because sexton is extremely tight.
The last three records have been garbage, but they tour non-stop and actually play their older material more plus jam/drum solos extra.
The guitar solos are tight on grassroots too.
Whoever said lincoln park is retarded, pick a band that can actually play their instruments. As for as the drums go find me a drummer in the rock scene that plays an 11th stroke roll like sexton.

Yes I remember when everybody on the message boards in 98 was wanting 311 to play with the Beasties. I was like "what about Wu Tang and the Beasties?" Ad Rock kept going on about calling the Wu 900 numbers. That made more sense to me.

And hey, I'm not saying people shouldn't like 311, but it always bothered me that your average Beastie Boys fan was "white", and only really opened up hip hop from the perspective of "white" metal-rap groups, like 311. The Lincoln Park thing was really similar. As was the Limp Buiscut thing. A lot of people seem to like hip hop but only in this little box that's very safe and familiar to them and their own cultrual experience.

The thing that sepeates the Beastie Boys from those bands is that the Beasties are authenically into and birthed out of hip hop culture. If go into who influenced the Beasties, there are mostly black artists on that list. It's not exclusively black. But it's like they have a lot of fans who tend to miss that piece of the puzzel.

Frankly, 311 always struck me as lacking hip hop authenticity. It was like they were rapping because metal-rap was the cool thing to do post Check Your Head. Nobody who is really "down" with hip hop raps like they do in Down. It reminds me of seeing a kid rapping about fruit rollups on a commercial with his hat turned sideways. He's playing a part, he's not really down. The point being that you just can't pick up a mic, know nothing about hip hop cultre, start rapping, and be "down". It was Del the Funky Homosapien who said " the style of dress is not the key dobolina, it's all in the mind and the heart, so you should start by remembering ya gotta pay a fee dobolina" I.e. you have to pay dues and learn where shit comes from before you can really understand it.

So Del is kind of harsh on the funk fakers, maybe too harsh cause everybody's got to start somewhere. BUT, the thing is, I just see way too many Beastie Boys fans who are drawn to the Beasties for the metal-rap thing, they like 311, and Rage, and Lincoln Park, and maybe even Limp Buiscut if they're the License to Ill beastie fans, but they never really expand beyond that. They skip over artists like Del, Rakim, Public Enemy, etc. etc. I.e. they skip over the black side of hip hop and never end up hearing that side of the story, which is REALLY important if you want to understand where the Beastie's came from.

So if 311 is your thing, that's perfectly cool, I would just encourage people to try to break past that mold and listen to some music that's strictly hip hop. There's room for all of it.

SirScratch....I see were your comming from with the hip hop point of view but I think that just because there is rap(rhyming) in music doesn't mean it's hip hop and I think the majority of bands that 'rap' or use rap(or hip hop artists) in thier music they aren't trying to be 'hip hop'. Like 311, I can't see them thinking of themselves as hip hop artists but influenced by hip hop or even just the flow of rap and they want it to reflect into thier music. A band like 311 has just too many influences, in my opinion, bundled in thier music and that's a tough task to pull off. They make it happen with a few songs but...
