Actually, in America, you have Ben Franklin to thank. He's the one who got it going.

Our library has all kinds of funky features, hidden and not-hidden.

On one floor, there's actually a bookcase that, if you push it, it swivels and you can go behind it and close yourself in.

On another, there's an audio installation in the stacks so that you're standing there reading or browsing, and suddenly you hear the sound of a page turning overhead, loud. It happens at random intervals, so you never know when it'll happen.

Stuff like that. Cool. (y)

I bet that is where the librarian masterbates to all the banned books.

Well, good luck with that. It's in the first floor browsing section (new materials), about eight yards from one of the guards and also waaaaaaayyy close to the children's department.

Neat,I like the homeless guy's birdbathing in the washroom at mine and the East Indian "security" guard who greets me warmly when he's not napping....Microfiche!

Yeah, we get a little bit of that, but not too much, thank God.

Some of the bathroom sinks are art pieces, too. Instead of a sink, per se, it's like a ragged canyon with a drain at the bottom. Very cool.

Not so. Who pays for it all? The government does or the insurance companies. Really? Well where does the government and insurance companies get their money?

Whoever isn't a socialist before the age of 20 has no heart; if you are still a socialist at 40, you have no brain.

You,I and your mother,we all pay into the pot that's the premise,a socialized collective for the betterment of all.....I'm a direct byproduct of the benefits....

How exactly is it that libraries work anyways? I mean, how can they buy one copy of a book and have hundreds of people read it without publishing companies/authors getting mad?

I love libraries, but I don't see how they get around the interests of those people. Sure, maybe it's not significantly impacting their sales - but how similar is that to people sharing an album online?

Well here in the Great White North libraries are fiscally supported by philanthropists as well as municipal, provincial and federal government sources....I think you'd pretty damn hard pressed to find a author or musician who would object to their creative output being dispersed by this method....a lot of publishing and clearing houses actually make material available specifically for library usage.....(y)
