Just been to see QOSA/White stripes

Although the name 'Intelligent Dance Music' sounds far to stuck up, I am quite interested by it. I never got much further than Autechre, Jamie Lidell and Adult. though, so I hoped you lot could help me out a little. What's good IDM? I want something that isn't too 'soft'. I like things that go bleep and have a good pounding bass.
And when is something concidered IDM anyway? When is something stupid dance music? Musicgeeks help me out!

Oh man, this hurts just to begin. Just so I don't have to name everything, try out the Rephlex label. Aphex Twin co-runs the label and his older material is a good place to start with the bleepin and the bassin' and the pokemans. I love Drexciya. They're(?) like a really distorted sounding Detroit electro freight train that ran itself into the Atlantic ocean and decided to live there eternally.

Also, check out http://www.planet-mu.com/ and you'll have a plethora of samples to listen to. Their releases are snatched up by extremely rabid fans so good luck on getting your hands on the limited 7" singles, which almost all are worth hearing. Check out Luke Vibert's material. He's a pro and is constantly creating.

And just to finish this off before you get less vague recommendations, calling something "intelligent" seems like discounting all other music. Anyone who uses IDM in a serious manner is a douche, no doubt. No offense or anything since this is all new to you. :D It's pretty evil how it describes what kind of music you're looking for though!
