Im sure this has already been covered but, What ever happened to mario C? I couldn't help notice the difference on 5 burroughs. It could just be the sound they were going for, but, those beats are way more "digital" if you will. I dont know it just seams different without him. Like on hello nasty there was alot more layering and complexity. ill comm.(my fav!) was real analog sounding.

I have to completely agree. Although I don't dislike To the 5 Boroughs as much as a lot of people, it is way digital and a little tinny. At this point though, I'm not sure they'll make another hip hop record. If they do, they do their best stuff - without question - with input from good producers (i.e., Rick Rubin, the Dust Brothers, Mario).
Someone posted about some alleged ill will between Yauch and Mario. Don't know anything about that.

i agree. first thing i noticed was it was very digital which isn't bad for a few songs... but not the whole thing... it kinda reminds me of latch brothers. but the music on "jet set radio future" i like a lot more than TT5B. i guess mario c had lot to do with the nice old analog "beastie sound" we all love. although a lot folks here would disagree, i think the beasties made a great choice picking up the instruments again. what else can you do with hip hop that hasn't been done? they really (to me) seem better and more creative with instruments. i hope it continues beyond the mix up maybe even with lyrics...

Didn't Mario move to Mexico or something - it sounded like a family oriented thing if I remember correctly - and who would stand in the way of that?
Besides which he's produced that Jack Johnson album since and that doesn't really contain the Grit of the B-boys stuff
Big up Mario regardless - hope you're well bro!

I always thought of Mario as more of a mixer/engineer than a producer in the hip-hop sense. I'm pretty sure on CYH, IC, and HN the bboys did their own compositions and Mario essentially fiddled with them at the controls.

Though the sound and production is undoubtedly much different without mario, the brightness and tinniness you speak of on tt5b is completely intentional and conceived.
A) the beasties chose to record nearly all digital for the record, using many soft-synths and "in-the-box" programs.
B) when it came down to mixing the album, they originally wanted to mixdown on their Neve console. A neve console, btw, is tops. its a very warm, sweet sounding analog console. every sound guys wet dream (very expensive though). anyways, when they brought in Duro to mix (who works with all the top rap and r&b acts, the likes of Jay-Z, etc.), he talked them into letting him mix it on his digital console (i have an article about the gear used for tt5b. if anyone's interested i can post a link). though this sounds like blasphemy in the beastie realm, it actually made sense, since the type of beats they were making, more synthetic and commercial sounding, are often mixed digitally. they were definitely experimenting with the more commercial "sound" with that album (sonically and arrangement-wise), and the real digital, crisp sound that you hear is completely necessary, and in fact a major factor of what makes contemporary rap music what it is.
like if you listen to timbaland, neptunes, dr. dre, etc. beats they all have that same brightness and super hi-fi sound. i think it's more noticeable with the beasties, though, since they're sonics are usually much the opposite. considering the elements used to make tt5b, mario probly wouldn't have taken much a different route with the recording and mixing of the album, i don't think. the big question is whether he would have talked them out of that direction in the first place and encouraged a more roots, instrument-oriented approach for the record.

Sure most hip hop records now are created through the more modern digital equipment and techniques and whanot, but when I say tinny, what I'm referring to is the timbre of the elements of the song. One of the main reasons the album sounds tinny isn't because of the production equipment, it's because of the lack of samples and the decision to use digital reproductions of instrumentation, which ends up sounding too crisp. Most hip hop producers sample elements of prior compositions on the basis of the timbre of the original recording. Timbre isn't functionally changed when sounds are run through a digital sampler. Anything with a decent sampling rate is going to recreate a functionaly identical sound. Hip hop production nowadays sounds thin because instead of paying for samples, artists are recreating binary approximations of sounds. It sounds like shit compared to all of the compression you can get from an original analog recording. Maybe the Beasties are sick of paying for samples, but you get what you pay for.

I agree that there may be less sampling. The album sleave still credits a shit load of samples. I even saw 50 cent in there somewhere(unexpected) I think its that " New New New York New York" or whatever . You know that wasnt free. I read that they are all into thier laptops. Thats cool I can relate. I just in the last year or so started experimenting.

C) The end result was a completley inorganic, piece of shit, record that made even "Licensed to Ill" appear to be brilliant.

OK, I get it. You're one of those "I don't really like rap, but I like the Beastie Boys" kind of fans. "Licensed to Ill" is a brilliant record dipshit.

I'll agree with moot and choose C.
No reason to go zealot on us for our opinions but some people just expect more, especially after beasties set the par so high in the first place with their first 4 releases
oh and another thing.. do not for a second front on LTI. This album in 1986 was seminal, it banged Your jaw dropped to the floor because you never heard anything like it before.

I definitely think Adam's Beck remix is catchy in all its simplicity, though I am more a fan of his Hello Nasty beat-style (y).
