Just got Blackalicious - The Craft and I'm really feeling it. Recommend me some less obvious hip-hop that I might be sleeping on.

If you are liking Blackalicious, you'll probably like Latyrx. Get 'The Album'

If my memory serves me correctly, Blackalicious, Latyrx and DJ Shadow are all part of the Solesides crew/project/collective/whatever.

I could be talking utter shite though.

At the risk of insulting you, I'd recommend "Danger mouse and Jemini - Ghetto pop life". I don't really know how big a record this was but it never gets old.

Again, at the risk of insulting, "Abdominal - Escape From The Pigeon Hole" is pretty fantastic.

Also, your English right? So I'm assuming you've got DJ Yoda stuff. If not I recommend it all. Especially his unthugged mixtape with Dan Greenpeace. There's a second one out soon too.

i know you said your familiar with mf doom, how bout mf grimm? his triple cd american hunger has really good beats. i didnt like his voice at first, but the more i listened the better he got to me. his lyrical content is way above the average rapper today.

next i will offer up percee p. he has a rediculous flow. really tears up the mic. the only problem with him is im not sure if he has a major label album out. if your searching on limewire or soulseek his stuff is sporatic and harder to find. but definatly keep your eye out for this guy, you will not be dissapointed.

im sure youve probably got some del the funky homosapian, but hes not known by a lot of people so ill put him up here. one of my personal favorites, absolutly a sick rapper.

a group called 'yall so stupid' is worth checking out. id get 'van full of pakistans', really good album, im not sure how many people have heard of.

a westcost wu-tang affiliate called northstar are something im big on too. definalty a different sound. you could check that out.

i know you know snoop dogg, but you could get his 'dead man walking' album. which suge knight released with old death row stuff. its way better than his new stuff IMO.

UGK is nice southern stuff, probably heard of them, but if not check em out.

lastly i will suggest a guy named charisma. peanut butter wolf puts a cd out with him. charisma is deceased so your not gonna find any 'new' stuff by him. but hes still nice.

Dude, great topic! Firstly I'd like to say that Blackalicious are one of my favourite groups of all time, they're doing for hip hop what De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest were doing for hip hop in the early 90's.

I also really dig...

The Roots
You must get your hands on Things Fall Apart, Illadephia Half Life or GAME THEORY (which to me is the best hip hop album of 2007)

Guru/Gang Starr
The Gang Starr album you'll want is Moment Of Truth, that said Hard To Earn is also brilliant. Guru's Jazzmatazz series are also fucking awesome. Some of the most brilliant beats and smooth hip hop can be found here!

Roots Manuva
Roots Manuva's debut Brand New Second Hand is classic. His latest album Awfully Deep is also very good.

MC Solaar
If you love good beats then you'll love MC Solaar, although a lot of people I know dislike him purely because he's French and they have no idea what he's rapping about. All of his albums are good, but the stand outs for me are Paradisiaque, Cinquieme As and Prose Combat.

Hilltop Hoods
Check out The Calling, if you like what you hear then get The Hard Road.

Edan
I've only heard one of his albums, Beauty And The Beat... it's like Paul's Boutique on acid...

Pete Rock & CL Smooth
These guys are also fucking awesome and worth the hunt at the record store! I really like Mecca and the Soul Brother, but All Souled Out and The Main Ingredient are also good buys.

I hope I've been of some help here! Of course there are other artists like DJ Shadow, Dr. Octagon, KRS-One (to an extent), Downsyde, Naughty By Nature, Run-DMC (DUH!) etc, but those mentioned above I can't express how much you should check them all out!

I'm bringing this back. I dropped out of the underground loop for a minute, put me onto some shit I've never heard of.

Only recent album I've listened to is the new Jedi Mind. It's pretty weak, especially compared to Servants in Heaven, Kings in Hell which I personally thought was a banger. Uncommon Valor: A Vietnam Story is straight up one of the best hip-hop songs ever in terms of mood and story.

Also, anyone know when Rugged Man is dropping again?

Kid Presentable
11-27-2008, 09:45 AM
I dunno about R.A. I didn't know he had anything in the works. I remember him getting slagged on here, but I've always liked what I've heard (really only that 'Stanley Kubrick' song and 'Die Rugged Man, Die).

Did you like 'Die Rugged Man, Die'? I thought Lessons was a sick track.

Lex Diamonds
11-27-2008, 09:50 AM
Did you like 'Die Rugged Man, Die'? I thought Lessons was a sick track.
Yeah bruv I have been listening to that album pretty much daily of late. Lessons is fat, I love how well that beat works despite it sounding like some Teletubbies shit on first impression. Chains is another highlight, Killah Priest always murks it on other people's shit.

I haven't really heard anything about a specific release, that's why I asked, but dude has said he's busy in interviews and shit.

Kid Presentable
11-27-2008, 09:57 AM
Ha you might appreciate this: some dude posted on SOHH claiming to be RA, had all the right facts and such. It turned into about 8 pages or so of people praising 'Lessons'. This was about 05 - 06 I think.

I remember (here we go) finding out about the underground shit in magazines like Thrasher; groups like The Coup and Tribe (pre Midnight Marauders) were always popular in skate mags back in the day. Nowadays I don't even feel like there's an underground thanks to the internet. Using myself as the lowest common denominator, if I can find it it's not underground.

These days it's real hard to surprise people or be surprised about their choices in hip-hop it seems.

Edit: have you heard 'Stanley Kubrick'? It's on Soundbombing 2, and should be on Youtube somewhere.

Lex Diamonds
11-27-2008, 10:15 AM
Yeah man, that's another song that gets a lot of love, and rightly so.

Ah, I miss SOHH. I barely ever check it anymore, it just seems kinda stale these days as even underground shit is 90% wack at the moment. And I guess you can define underground shit as hip-hop that you won't hear unless you actively seek it out?

Compared to right now even 2006 seems like a golden age: AOTP, Jedi Mind, Royce, Cube, Nas, Jay and others all dropped some hotness and I was right there for the leaks. Granted at the time some of it seemed weak but I think HHID and KC have improved with age. Right now I feel like all the best hip-hop is in the past, but maybe I'm just out of the loop.

Kid Presentable
11-27-2008, 10:29 AM

I don't know if anyone's already done a thread about that Bashton 12" produced by Adrock from a year or two ago? ('Can I Eat' was the choice track) - it was really sick and I'm surprised no-one seems to mention that? - I haven't heard any other material by him except what's on his myspace page 'though.

I'm kind of assuming that you're familiar with Sean Price and stuff? I've been struggling to get decent hip hop since all the record shops disappeared too, but I liked those two albums that Buckshot did with 9th Wonder (but I think I remember you saying you weren't really feeling Buckshot much before now?)

I quite like some of that Buck 65/Atmosphere kind of stuff. Definitely a big Edan fan. I guess all the Stone's Throw & Def Jux stuff is really what I'm checking for recently really but I'll listen to the Cool Kids and allsorts of stuff, - most of the good artists mentioned in this thread have been around for time (even if the thread is over a year old) - if you're looking for pre-2003 sort of stuff I could go on for weeks but I get the impression you're reasonably knowledgable on that front.

Not sure if it's your kind of thing but I check for a lot of that instrumental hip hop stuff too - I'm really into Prefuse 73 and he's put out quite a lot of material if you do find you like it, otherwise Flying Lotus's stuff?

I came to this thread looking for ideas myself - I'll check out that Tanya Morgan stuff - I've read good stuff about them but haven't heard them yet.

I'm keeping an open mind on the new Q-Tip until I've heard it properly.

These days it's real hard to surprise people or be surprised about their choices in hip-hop it seems.

As for the Rugged Man - last I heard he was 5 tracks into his album, making movies, and checking out the lesbians across the street......

MC Solaar
If you love good beats then you'll love MC Solaar, although a lot of people I know dislike him purely because he's French and they have no idea what he's rapping about. All of his albums are good, but the stand outs for me are Paradisiaque, Cinquieme As and Prose Combat.

roosta: I'm already Jeru down, but that Wax Tailor song is sick, I might have to check their album.

I know Ghostface, Q-Tip, Sean Price, Cool Kids and Edan pretty well. I don't see how you could call Ghost or Tip underground though, but whatever.

I got the Tanya Morgan shit. It's nice, but hasn't grabbed me as amazing yet. Of course that's only after like 3 quarters of a listen so my opinion may well change.

I generally don't go for instrumental shit, for me an artist needs sick lyrics AND beats to be good. Having said that, I like a bit of RJD2 so maybe I'll check some out. Thanks for the cocmprehensive response easy3. (y)

For a little bit I was really into Wale, but after awhile his flow and voice get irritating.

The new album by 88 Keys is pretty decent, then again, any album that features a song about Viagra with Kanye West can't be that bad.

Little older but the two Felt albums with Murs and Slug are pretty good, the dedication to Lisa Bonet a bit better.

New album by Skillz is fucking dynamite. The song with Freeway is one of the best I've heard this year.

Not everybody is on board with me, but I find Pigeon John to be entertaining.

Elzhi of Slum Village's new album "The Preface" is pretty great too.

The Blue Herb - Japanese but I love this. Get the "Sell our Soul" album.

TTC - French but dope. My favorite MC of the moment (Teki Latex) is from this crew.

Hey Padster: I don't even know why I'm sharing this treasure of a song to you. I looked for years for this song. Had no idea who MC'd it. I'll guarantee you this: If you don't agree that for it's time this was the greatest rap song ever put out then I'm going to call you out as a Liar. This was hands down the best MC'ing Song in 85 PERIOD!

Never has the BELL been used to that level of effectiveness before or ever again. And I'm gonna go on the hooks here and say will it ever be able to be used to this level again.

In the 80's Hip Hop came out mostly in singles and this was the Joint from day one. I believe the only reason that we didn't hear more of Mixmaster Gee & The Turntable Orchestra was because RUSH had flex and he was similar to LL Cool J

Only Grittier

they are total geeks and as far from the stereotype of hip hop as you can possibly get but I loves em.

No offense taken. I'm using hyperbole for sure, so try not to get too bent out of shape about it. We all have assholes and opinions. I'll attempt to explain mine [opinion not asshole].

I'm not a big anticon fan, not because I don't like what they do, I just haven't heard much. What little I have heard is the first cLOUDDEAD album, and it blows my mind every time I listen to it. It's so incredibly different from what the rest of hip hop is/was doing at the time/still [to my knowledge, I'm not familiar w/ a lot of the artists mentioned in this thread]. Hip Hop should always be reinventing itself. That's the definition of hip hop [to me at the very least]. And I'll gladly take cLOUDDEAD's fucked up acid-trip-hop-indie-rock-fx-spoken-word-sung-rhymes-double-voice-weirdness over the same ol' beats, concepts and auto-tune that has come to define the mainstream. I also prefer their brand to the slightly underground MC's who constantly rhyme about hip hop's current stagnant nature. That gets pretty boring too. I just find them very refreshing.

So yeah. They have been saving hip hop [for me] since I first heard them. I'll hear your "stupid on so many different levels" reasoning now. If you want. You probably won't change my mind, and I doubt I've changed yours.
