....when I was a kid.
but, more specifically, I always wanted to take a bunch of objects from the present back to the 1920's or something and show them to people. You know, to fucking freak them out.
I'm thinking now that I'd take:
an iphone (loaded with current music, of course)
a copy of "Y tu Mama Tambien" on DVD (and a portable player and whatnot)
a Wii
Michael Jackson's mugshot
what would you take?

Hahaha, I used to think about this too. I was actually thinking of going back to the 1800s and showing them stuff. Mind you, nothing like iPods or anything like that because I'd be hung for being a witch. I thought it'd be neat to bring them stuff like peanut butter Twix and the like, because seriously. They eat nothing but vegetables and potatoes and gruel, sometimes meat if they're lucky. If they subside on that kind of diet 24/7, imagine throwing in a Snickers bar all of the sudden! How amazing would that be? It's a million times better than anything they could imagine and I'd be considered Jesus to them from there on out.

If I recall, that's Jesus' claim to fame, right? Bringing candy bars to people or something.
I dunno, my religious knowledge is a bit rusty.

Yeah, but he bequeathed upon them shittier versions of chocolate. It's because they didn't have fancy chocolate then like they do nowadays.
Oh, and if I visited the 80s, I'd bring my parents one of those sports almanacs. It worked out pretty well for Biff.

A rifle and a map to my ancestors.
PARADOX!
I'd bring an encyclopedia...or...something. I don't know. Something to try to communicate technological advancements so I could go back to the future and have something new.

on first glance your avatar looks like whatshisname, the dad from family ties.
for some reason, i think i'd want to show up wearing white contact lenses talking about how humans in the future lost their eye pigmentation from looking at evil talking window boxes all day and that its all their fault.

guaranteed to shock
bring them pictures of sex shops that sell penises made of space age materials for women to keep under their beds
show them video from a marylin manson concert, a gay pride parade, pictures of the beach, a few hours of music video television programming on dvd, some hardcore porn
i'd also throw in a furniture catalog, a northface jacket, a few beatles albums, a calculator, a case of rogaine, viagra, a copy of inconvenient truth, fast food nation, a copy of motor trend.

80 years from now they'll be saying the same thing about us. If not sooner. And if we're (universal 'we') lucky enough to make it that long.

I'd go back to 1983 and show Michael Jackson a picture of Michael Jackson in 2007.

you won't get cell service! or internet. so just take an ipod.
or maybe you will, but they'll charge you a massive roaming fee.
i'd go back in time to caveman days and impress the natives with MAGIC! YEAH!

You wouldn't need an iphone or a Wii to dazzle people from the '20s. You could just bring this (http://www.oaktreeent.com/web_photos/Telephones/Motorola_Cellular-One_Cell-Phone_web.jpg) and Pong and you'd still blow their minds.

Better not bring a cellular phone, too funny to see people's faces when you try to impress them telling that you can call and speak to someone with your "technology from the future": *dial number*....*wait*....*nothing happens* -------> angry crowd takes out the rope and takes you to the nearer tree (y):D

it's possible that simply traveling through time would be enough.
I'd just show up and answer questions press conference style.
