There's this carry out food place in my building that serves fresh sushi, pastas, salads, wraps, sandwiches, etc.
They throw it all away and I happen to stand by their door so, all of the food is still cool from their fridge. It's not mixed in with regular garbage either so I grab a box full-enough to share with my coworkers and also bring some home to the wife.
By doing this, I'm saving 20 bucks a day cause that's how much it costs in most places to order out around my area.
Not to mention that the sushi-sashimi platters they toss out are kickin(y)

Are your co-workers and wife aware of where this food came from?

Yep. My coworkers and I take turns gathering it up. It's just food coming out of their fridge, into a plastic bag and then handed to us. It's not like it's in a trash heap or anything. It's still fresh and only 6 hours old.

Why don't they hook up with a homeless shelter or something so that it doesn't go all to waste? Drives me mad when people waste food etc

Well it's not going to waste, eric and his buddies are eating it.
It's not that bad really, not like you are searching through the garbage, and it's good that the store actually gives away it's shit, some places wouldn't do that.

I was just saying that in case they had been chucking it out long before Eric etc came along or Eric etc don't get through all the stuff which is thrown away.
i don't think restaurants can do that, anymore. some bum got sick from old food, and sued a place before, so that's why they just throw the shit out, now.
oh, and free food is the best.

I know. Once at Taco Bell, they put sour cream on my friend's burrito and she hates sour cream and had asked for it not to be put on - so she told them of their mistake and they said "Oh okay, we'll throw this one away and make you a new one." I said "Shit, I love sour cream, hand it over!" and she just stared at me and was like "Uh, I can't give it to you for free. I have to throw it out."
WHY THE HELL NOT? You're giving it to the TRASH for free! It's okay to waste it, but if someone wants to actually put it to good use, THEN you have to charge? Ain't that some bull. I should have walked around behind the counter and taken it outta the trash, because it was still tightly wrapped up and everything. Then she wouldn't have "given" it to me, right?
Still though, something about trash burritoes still scare me even if it's completely wrapped. I mean, I'm already taking a risk by eating at Taco Bell, I don't think I should chance my health more.

I was thinking about it or just leaving it in a sleeping homeless person's lap.
I just don't want them to throw it back at me asking, "how the hell am I gonna buy beer with this shit!!!"

I was at a sandwich shop called Potbelly where they have delicious toasted subs and the lady was piling on some toppings and the toasted bread split apart and she was like, "oh no, this one broke" and threw it in the garbage! stupid. just like, put some new bread on there man.
I know some kids who used to get most of their food from dumpster diving when they were in college and/or super poor. that kind of stuff kinda grosses me out though. also, I'd be afraid of getting in trouble for it or something. :o

That's a big shame, because Potbelly is delicious. They shouldn't throw away their num-nums. :(

Probably wouldn't work o well with raw fish, but, yeah -- depending on the store, lots of places give away their day-olds or whatever. Usually more breads than meat, though. It's probably a lot safer to offer someone your day-old bagels than, say, try to navigate cottage cheese through the non-profit system (dealing with hours going by, refrigeration, shelf life, etc.).
