hey, what's good?

can someone clear this one up?

did they replay parts of "i've been watching you" by the southside movement for "so what'cha want"? or did they have acces to the reel or what?
cause clearly some parts (guitar in the chorus) sound more sparse on "so what'cha want" then on "i've been watching you".

thanks!

Sorry bro. I'm not familiar with the song you're talking about, but I don't think it's ever been identified as a sample or an interpolation in So Watcha' Want.

.....I don't think it's ever been identified as a sample or an interpolation in So Watcha' Want.

thanks, but....
you serious?
they pitched it down and straight looped it.

so then what did you ask the question for if its so clearly obvious?

"Adam Horovitz had a couple of loops on his SP 1200 which we thought were cool. We put them on the two-inch tape with Mario, but then ended up playing over the samples, eventually replacing them all together. Adam played some guitar parts, I played some beats on the kit, and Mark Nishita did a few takes of some funky organ that we sampled as well. In a last-minute flurry, the vocals came together, and the Biz was sampled from an earlier session he had done with us, making the song complete" - Michael Diamond, 1999

so then what did you ask the question for if its so clearly obvious?

it's obvious they'v used it yes, but since it sounds a different i was wondering if they had acces to the reel or replayed it.

thanks for clearing this up.

I'm fairly certain that they just replayed those parts on their instruments and looped their instrumentation. There's some info around on how Mike D got that crazy kick drum effect on So What Cha Want using cardboard box.

Its not a pitched down sample though. You just can't filter out all the other sounds in there and get a result as clean as what cha want.

Here's a link to "I've been Watching You" by Southside Movement

It was pretty common for the Beasties to take old songs and reinterpret them on live instruments at that time (as opposed to just strait up sampling.) They mostly did it on their instrumental tracks but also did some of it on the other cuts.

Haha, there were like 8 posts between the time I started writing, found the link and took a piss.

hehehe, well according to mike d they started with the sampled loops.
i know you can't seperate instruments like that from a two way mix that's why i was wondering if they had the original reel or something.
thanks anyway.

yeah dude thats the one. there's a song by mr oizo where a few minutes of that song plays with some effects. it's wierd to hear it our of the "so what'cha want" context though. i think it plays at the end of the song 1$44. The version of the sample in this song actually sounds like the distorted heavy beastie sample.
