Most of the independent record stores I know of mostly just carry stuff on indie labels. I will try one I've never been to though, I remember them getting some selective big releases in the past.

I'd only suggest doing what you can. Give your local indie record store a call and see if they'll have it; if not, get it wherever you can. The bonus with local record stores is that they do not indirectly pressure artists to censor themselves (a la Wal-Mart), they don't drive out local competition (a la every chain store), the people who work there are a lot more helpful, and you can end up finding out about some music you'd have otherwise missed.

On the other hand, Apple is not an indie record store and I'll be getting mine from iTunes. Thankfully, however, Apple has given up on their FairPlay restrictions and you can now freely reproduce the copies you own. That's good enough for me.
